1991 Great Archanean Trek [FINAL RESULTS]

Pleased with the report on the handling and ease of travel. After all those inquiries I realised that versatility and stability was more important than all out speed. I actually downgraded the injection system for the sake of maintenance simplicity so I really hope that issue didn’t affect us too badly!

The engine stalled even using automatic clutch with the controller in Beam, so really not much I could do…

I appreciate how much effort you go through given how many entries there are. Sorry if I’ve missed it or you’d rather not answer but how do you determine the penalties for repairs etc.? Is there an RNG involved?

I entered my type 1 as a full-on lore vehicle expecting it to finish last but instead my little 40’s offroader finished 4th overall. I’m impressed!

Yes, I explained the methodology here:

Looking only at stage times, you came 3rd and 2nd, so your finish 6th overall does mean some bad luck with the various RNG rolls.

Ah, 7th overall! Wasn’t expecting that, but it is gladly appreciated.

Truck Class

801 @Madrias Sinistra Mojave V6 Crew-Cab '85 USA Luke Sinistra USA Andrea Wright USA

The 1985 Sinitra Mojave is a solid light-weight truck. Excellent short gear ratio gearbox and a 4 litre V6 engine complete the package. There were some limited technical issues in the prologue, but nothing too bad.
Luke Sinistra and Andrea Weight getting lost slightly and having trouble locating the Al Mina Oasis checkpoint was not the best start to the main stage, but from thereon things ran smoothly.
The truck has remained very reliable throughout the tough endurance trek, but the American team did spend a some time on maintenance at each of the checkpoints.

802 @F12OM Martin-Wagner Outrunner XE V6 DAKAR '90 GER Hans Schröder GER Ernst Hartmann GER

The name says V6, but homologation control clearly verified there’s an inline-6 under the hood of this 1990 Martin-Wagner Outrunner XE V6 DAKAR. Remarkable for an offroad truck, this body-on-chassis Dakar version only has the rear wheels driven. Homologation specialists furthermore establish the engine and chassis are making use of disproportionately difficult to manufacture materials and components, and decided to lay down a penalty.
Not the smoothest run in the prologue due to a large turning circle and a failed first attempt at a high grade uphill climb, forcing the team to let the engine cool before trying again. But remaining free of any additional issues, the total time is not bad.
The section past Al Mina Oasis is rough on rear wheel driven cars, and the heavy truck cannot keep itself stable on a high grade embankment and start to slide, wedging itself between rocks. The truck is unrecoverable.

803 @Niveon KAZ Munitsipalitet 3.5L Crew Vehicle 4x4 '62 RUS Jan Dhoorman NED Kelly Dhoorman NED

An old Russian KAZ, that what a Dutch hobby team, the Dhoormans, are bringing to this event. At least it’s got a proven record over the last 30 years that it can handle the mud of Southern Siberia in the Summer. They were also used in military spec in Soviet operations in Afghanistan.
No issues for the Dhoormans in the prologue session, the KAZ holds up without issues – unless you count the fuel economy, or lack thereof.
Some issues for the underpowered engine at the difficult Al Mina Oasis sections, where Jan Dhoorman needs more than one attempt to get the KAZ up the slopes of the pathway there. In general there is a lot of switching between the main and the low range gearbox to keep the truck within the power band on the difficult terrain.

804 @Mad_Cat Washington Panama '91 USA Michael Astley USA Janice Brown CAN

Unimpressive as far as American trucks go, this Washington Panama; it is on the small side and only has a V6 in the front. It is as if the 90s bring an era of settling down for practicality and economy over across the pond.
Astley and Brown look relaxed behind the wheel of their truck in the prologue. The new Washington automatic gearbox might have to do something with that. The suspension holds up remarkable as well, for what does not look like a heavy duty model. However, the only very preserved American feature appears to be the fuel economy, and refuelling stops cost a lot of time.
The automatic and the traction control on sand and loose gravel, combined with that thirsty engine, means Astley and Brown are burning through the fuel, even though they requested and gained extra supplies from the organisation. The Washington is very competent at tackling the steepest slopes though, thanks to its automatic low range gearbox. The team manages the finish line in a very good time, but with only a few drops of fuel to spare, even after using up the extra reserves.

805 @TheAlmightyTwingo Meijer Dalton (USP) '91 USA Mary Greengarden USA Harold McMuffin CAN

A great V8 sound from the US built Meier, a very competent truck in the Prologue, except for the turning circle and the very tight parts of the course. A bit of bad luck though due to a burst tyre for Greengarden and McMuffin that cost the team some time here.
In the dunes there must be a significant risk of sea sickness, with the Meijer Dalton swooping back and forth on its suspension.

806 @Caligo Jidosha Kogaku JHL-V '91 JPN Joel Watson USA Samuel Roy CAN

Incredibly wide turning circle, but I guess that’s the result of having a truck so high of the ground with such small wheels. Smooth run in the Prologues regardless, as the large boxer six engine propels the truck along nicely, and the gearing of the Jidosha in particular seems to be spot on.
Main stage performance is not as good as expected, mainly due to the small wheels losing grip, but most pressing is the fuel consumption. Luckily Watson and Roy are in Zimbukto and not in the middle of nowhere, when supplies run dry.

807 @Rudzis Schwarzburg Vanster '87 DEU Angus Wilson AUS Simon Freudenberg AUT

A weight violation was noticed during homologation for the Schwarzburg Vanster. Ballast was added to the truck, and points deducted.
Prologue impressions are good, although the van might be hindered by extremely long gearing.
The long gearing and complete lack of control over the differentials is what handicaps Wilson and Freudenberg in Archana, especially at Al Mina. The van gets stuck and takes a lot of time and fuel to get going again.
So much fuel, in fact, that the rest of the trek has to be completed at a snail’s pace to conserve their limited fuel supply. The Schwarzburg only just makes it.

808 @CMT CMT Deliveroo 4300 “Poweroo” 4x4 Trek Edition '78 DEU Richard Mogawe ZWE Rainer Gellert DEU

CMT, basic and bland design like usual, the Deliveroo surprises here mostly in having reliability issues for Mogawe and Gellert. It’s nothing they cannot solve, but the repairs take a a sizeable amount of time, all adding to the prologue time. Additionally, there’s the fuel consumption, which is high even on a short stage like this. This does not bode well for the main stage.
Properly in the desert it is doubtful whether the traction control system and ABS system this truck is outfitted with are anything but a hinderance.
Shortly over half the stage, the engine sputters. The CMT Deliveroo is out of fuel and Mogawe and Gellert are stranded. They overestimated their fuel economy by a lot. Not even taking the extra fuel would have seen them finish this trial.

809 @gridghost Scarab Boulder RX24 '90 SWE Carine Fredricks SWE Mats Stenson SWE

Another capable entry from Scarab, although it will remain to be seen how the sleek van tackles rough terrain. Fredricks and Stenson certainly have no trouble keeping up the tempo on the loose sand and gravel of the Prologue.
As predicted, the Scarab struggles on the real rough terrain, and Fredricks and Stenson spend a lot of time digging and pushing the truck out from being stuck.
Eventually though, the team reaches Archania again.

810 @DukeOFhazards Yotata Land Crusher SuperClass '91 JPN Norman Davidson USA Jesse Stutz USA

The Yotata Land Crusher is an impressive machine with an extremely powerful V8 engine under the hood, producing well over 300 horsepower and over 500 Newton meters of torque.
And it is fast in the Prologue, although not all is positive. The languorous automatic gearbox might cause issues in Archana, and it has suffered this stage. The repairs take a long time.
The Yoyata also misses low range gearing and locking differentials, so it is no surprise that Davidson and Stuts are extremely careful at the start. But it is soon clear that the big wheels and low end torque cause the Land Crusher to basically glide over everything Archana throws at it.

811 @Alib Bramble Wyvern B.12a '91 GBR Erik Franks DEU Alex Carrick GBR

Bramble entered a ridiculous contraption consisting out of a van with a 6.6 litre boxer six engine, producing over 370 horsepower.
Prologue performance is underwhelming for the power output though. Franks and Carrick seem plagued mostly by a very bad gearbox that does not suit the power curve of the engine. This does not help the fuel consumption one bit either.
The German-English team has underestimate exactly that for their Archana trip: fuel consumption. Despite taking some extra fuel, the engine is simply too thirsty and the team needs to give up along the shores of the Anuman River.

812 @Bf94387 Aura Brawler GAT Spec '91 ISL Gustav Johanassen SWE Aaren Muller DEU

Another boxer six engine with high horsepower. AURA has been performing well so far, and Johanassen and Muller will want to continue that trend.
Prologue stage performance is not as the Icelandic team wanted though, mainly due to electronic issues. It is unclear why so many manufacturers chose to integrate traction control systems tuned for daily drives on asphalt well within speed limits on their offroaders meant to tackle dirt and rocks.
The main stage is going much better for the Aura though, as the big wheels take all obstacles well. The electronic traction system seems to handicap the truck much less here, and even seems to help with fuel economy.

813 @machalel Bechov SX91 '91 RUS Alexi Sokolov RUS Maksim Ivanov RUS

A Russian turbocharged V10 diesel engined truck. As if the longest truck to enter wasn’t strange enough by appearances alone.
Sokolov and Ivanov do well in the Prologue, where the large truck proves to be solid and reliable.
In the main stage equally, there is not much more to report other than solid progress.

814 @yangx2 Honghu 8x8 '90 CHN Baba Wang CHN Xiu Ying Zhang CHN

A sensible design from China. Although the offroad truck with the five cylinder turbocharged engine does seem to be missing a functional exhaust system which needs to be added on at a penalty.
The Honghu, piloted by Wang and Zhang, is a stylish offroader, and performance seems solid as well. Reliability so far is above expectations too.
Tyre quality made in China seems to be sub-par, as the team is already out of spares at Fazo. Especially the rear tyres seem to be very sensitive for sharp rocks.

815 @Turbofreak88884444 Solvent Banshiee '91 USA James Jenton GBR Jason Henerasy USA

The Solvent Banshiee – however you pronounce that – is a cartoonish looking baja van.
Jenton and Henerasy are plagued with technical issues and maintenance downtimes all Prologue long. When the team finally gets the van going, it turns out to be nigh uncontrollable, with an unpredictable bouncy suspension and severe steering issues. The Solvent crashes heavily halfway through the Prologue and is retired.

816 @Mikonp7 Haapala SupportVan '91 FIN Raik Palo FIN Silvo Wuori FIN

Haapala is sending a support vehicle to race. Palo and Wuori are trying to make the best out of it.
The Happala is slow and suffers an overheating engine in the Prologue.
While a solid performer overall, the Happala seems to struggle on climbs during the main stage. More than once the engine appears to almost stall, and Palo and Wuori need to search for alternative routes up a steeper hillside. Fuel consumption is much worse than expected as well, with the team almost depleting all extra fuel taken on board.

817 @electroGG SW Megrez '91 USA Matej Možina SVN Nik Likar SVN

Another high powered van, the SW Megrez has a racing spec V8 installed. The Slovenians Možina and Likar need to guide this power to a good position.
And it is a good time from the Slovenians in the Prologue, despite having braking issues. The ABS seems to cause issues getting the van stopped. Fuel consumption might be a reason to worry for the main stage though.
And as expected, while the Mergez has a good start, it soon becomes clear the thirsty engine needs more fuel than the Slovenians thought necessary to take along.

818 @Mythrin Ceder Flete 2.1 TurboD '91 FRA Remy Pernet FRA Michel Mazet FRA

A French turbo-diesel Ceder Flete van does not immediately sound like the entry you’d tip for win.
Pernet and Mazet seem to think the same after a prologue riddled with technical issues. However, maintenance seems to be quick and straight forward. So in the end, time loss is limited.
Not a good start from Pernet and Mazet as they flip the van near Ziffa, but with the help of some spectators they can right the vehicle and continue.
The automatic transmission is not optimal on the difficult sections, but the Ceder manages, and in the end, the final time is all but bad.

Main Stage Points:

Surprise winner of the main stage again, with the rather anonymous Washington Panama. The Aura is making up time, and the Yotata makes a good impression as well.

The Chinese team in the Honghu loses time, but they do have quite the lead built up from before.

2nd, I’ll take it for sure, especially after the buggy disappointment

Wow, a better result than expected from a >2t turbo v10 ‘thing’ :stuck_out_tongue:

Definitely happy about that!

Congrats to the Honghu

WE DID IT BOYS

Woah!!! That was unexpected. Surprised to see the 8x8 do so well. Thanks for hosting too, was an interesting competition to build for

Great to see a podium finish in each category from AURA!

And as for the BoBBy, Tia “Krestnaya Matj” almost cracks a smile when she heard the news of her win.

Not over yet, that’s just the prologue

No, that was both Prologue as well as main stage.

Thank you all for competiting! I enjoyed the compeititon as well, eventhough technical issues delayed its conclusion and had me do double work for 60% of the entries. I am happy everything went smooth after I adapted the methodology.
