Arion Cassiopeia '99

Ever since the Arion Monoceros was uncovered in 1989, engineers and designers were hoping to have a second chance at creating a monstrous hypercar, and so the Cassiopeia was born. A hypercar with almost no bounds, being formed from carbon fibre and AISi to create an almost alien car, especially from the exterior too, it wouldn’t look far out of place in a sci-fi movie or conceptual cyberpunk-escue future.

Arion Superb Starling Blue

The extremely dynamic flesh of the Cassiopeia is completely carbon fibre akin to it’s chassis to maximise safety but also decrease weight as much as possible to make up for the muscular, yet hefty 6 litre twin turbo V16 powertrain mounted in the middle of this RWD rocket.

Arion Autumn Adder

The Cassiopeia was offered in the Arion DLT colour selection. Of which the paint contributed around £2,000-5,500 onto the overall price. The deep pearls and eye-catching iridescent paints were certainly a niche Arion had covered, it made them stand out in a crowd, even amongst popular brands.

Arion Glossy Starling Purple

The otherworldly looks of the Cassiopeia caught many by surprise as did the Pylades, even so the performance was more than anyone could ask for. When the Cosmos department carried out testing they managed to drive the Cassiopeia all the way to it’s 232mph top speed, setting an incredible world record for the fastest production car 1999-2004.

Arion White Adder

The price of a Cassiopeia was inflated, being over £126,000 before extras, it was a car for the minority. Reports brought in from sales were somewhat disappointing, and in the end the first generation Cassiopeia’s were not successful in sales, with only 72 sold out of 200 produced in 1999. However, the car ceased production come 2001, and in 2002 the last one of an overall 249 were sold.

Arion Magnus '99

Nearing the turn of the century, Arion released their newly anticipated sporty muscle car: The Magnus. It was powered by their 3.2L Twinturbo “320V2” V8, however this was the third version producing a neat 309.5hp, which helped the 1460kg car go up to speeds past 170mph. The stylish smooth yet sharp look gave an attractive look for buyers backed up with performance and comfort too, having room in the back for extra passengers made it classify as an entry level GT car for the base model.

Arion Ruby Adder Iridescent

It featured a street-styled decal on the side for a few extra hundred pounds, which got the attention of many younger buyers if they could afford it… The panoramic sunroof was a standard option on even the base model, so prices were high from £46,800+. Another interesting style cue for the Magnus was it’s love it or hate it semi-clear taillights formed together in the middle by a bar to make an interesting flowing look.

Arion Sapphire Pearl

The Magnus was offered in both the latest Arion colour selections (DLT & RST). These brand new colours released a few months ago were already very popular from their originality, from the sparkling pearls to the midnight shining iridescent. They added more onto the overall price, but most buyers were keen to own a special paint job to stand out.

Arion Amethyst Starling

Offered with TCS and ABS, with ESC only being on higher end models, it was a muscular sports car for the market. Soon becoming somewhat a cult classic with more high-end street racers buying them, with more than enough cash to spare on the fancy extras some of the tuned up ones had upwards of 600hp.

Sport model

Arion White Adder & Ruby Pearl painted brake calipers

Introduced with the base model at launch, the sport trim didn’t have too much of an exterior change aside from “S” badging and the flashy sports rims as featured on the Cassiopeia as well. However, the front bumper did have a minor update having larger front-side intakes and removed fog-lights that were re-introduced into the headlight cluster instead. Along with that, it had fully clear taillights, making it a bit more distinct as well as very subjective to style.

GL model

With the interest in the sort of GT base the Magnus had, Arion later revised it with a GL (Grand Limousine) release. This model was given all sorts of extras to make it much more luxurious than the standard and sport combined. It featured GL badging, 18 inch GL rims and even it’s own unique, much more sleeker lip spoiler.

Arion Onyx Pearl

The insides were lathered in expensive gear, having luxury seating all around and even a high end Pioneer 2005 Vision DVD car navigation system, which gave GPS navigation on the centre console you stream movies into the integrated monitors on the back of the front seats for rear passengers to enjoy.

Cosmos model

Later on Cosmos released their own version of the Magnus, complete with an engine swap from the Buckingham Supersport. With the crazy 4.0L V16 Twin Turbo, the exterior followed this idealism with wild styling like the 8 exhaust tips and whaletail additional wing. The bumpers had re-worked styling including brake-pipe vents and more bonnet vents for the big power plant of a motor’s cooling.

Arion Cosmos Pearl III

GT2 race car

With GT2 racing becoming quite popular, Arion developed a special GT2 variant to the Magnus, having a completely re-worked body by Cosmos as well as many race car bits added on, from Tow-hooks, endurance lights, splitters and diffusers, canards, lightweight mirrors, Lexan windows, race fuel intake, roof intake, single wiper, and finally emergency switches. The engine was also beefed up to an impressive 516.4hp, along with a nice 26.9mpg with that it did impressively well in endurance racing, even gaining podiums at times. The re-done aero and weight reductions turned this beast into a superb racing monster.

Arion Masamune Metallic

GT2 road car

As with most racing regulations, road car bases had to be produced, and the GT2 road car was barely even road legal, using the exact same racing tuned motors the race car had, but with just the Cosmos aero, it proved quite a handful to most drivers and was more of a collector’s item, being limited to only 500 production models.

Arion Cassiopeia GT1 '99

With motorsports booming, Arion had plans to enter the FIA GT Championship with two of it’s newest cars; The Magnus GT2 and Cassiopeia GT1. Both extremely tuned up to the limits of the specifications, they were on the pinnacle of racing alongside other manufacturers in races.

Arion Masamune Metallic

The Cassiopeia GT1 was expertly tweaked by Arion’s Cosmos division, and there was around 25 made, only available to racing teams interested in using their cars, and special clients. One of each the GT1 and GT2 cars were kept inside the Arion factory reception room as a showcase to their most magnificent race cars produced.

I never thought Arion would make something even more awe-inspiring than the Magnus, but with the Cassiopeia, they have done just that. In fact I could imagine both of them being featured in Gran Turismo 2, Test Drive 6, TOCA World Touring Cars and/or Need for Speed: High Stakes, for example.

2000

Reaching the 2000s now, Arion had been growing non-stop from producing well-received cars from the Buckingham IV, to Magnus, Cassiopeia, and the Wren, as well as a few others. This growth had their small workplace overworked, and so the team decided to expand on a global scale with help from IkaMagic and Sisten, Arion established two global HQs in America, Chicago and Japan, Yokohama. These new headquarters based at other ends of the globe produced specific modifications to Arion models to go with the law in places, and also have cars transported from new plants in each locations around to Oceania and the rest of Asia. Europe meanwhile got Arion cars sent to a few smaller salesrooms that were developed in France, Netherlands, and Spain. With this new expansion set in place, years to come were looking on the up for Arion. However, Aruna Sr. shortly passed on (89yrs). It was a tragic day in 1999, in the early hours he had died from lung cancer. A funeral was held by his son Aruna Jr, and the day was not forgotten by Arion as a company, giving a short statement about their loss of the company founder and how they will never forget him.

Arion Speedster Concept '00

As a nod to Arion race cars of the past, a very special concept was made, the “Speedster Concept.” It was styled similarly to the current Arion lineup, with the distinct 3 circular lights either side. The livery gave a rather striking feeling, with deep dark stripes and a fade along the side. It featured a tuned 245F6 motor, with 280hp/1053kg, the car was reasonably fast.

Arion Masamune Metallic

Unfortunately, the concept never made production, as Arion executives stated “The market for a premium race car just isn’t there.” One even said “If I could convince the board to make it, I would have done. But there is other projects we are working on.” The car is currently on display as Arion’s showroom and factory based in Richmond.

Arion Spica '00

With the major expansion to Arion, one of their latest cars was something intended for anyone and everyone: The Spica hatchback. Having a 2.0L I4 powerplant and AWD with a fancy premium interior, it was an expensive, but well worth it model.

Arion Masamune Metallic

The standard base trim came with exotic colours as well as the glass sunroof as standard, which was one of Arion’s niche design features. The car actually did very well in sales, as it was just about as priced against competitors as well as desirable. They became somewhat common on the UK in more uptown areas.

Arion Emerald Pearl

Arion Spica GL '00

The GL (Grand Limousine) trim came with an extra lathering of chrome detail, as well as being purchasable in the DLT (Dark Luxury Tone) colour schemes. The luxury interior was more attractive than the base model, being much more comfortable. It even came with extra space in the rear, allowing for rear seat tables that folded down from the front seats. These were later thought of as quite an un-safe feature in coming years, and got removed in the '03 model onwards.

Arion Spica Sport '00

The Sport model came with an additional front lip and some re-working of the front bumper, as well as de-chrome for a much more simple sport look. The full chrome rims were a hit and miss for most people, but the car sold pretty well for those wanting a fun little runabout.

To qualify for rally in the Super 2000, a few adapted sport versions, tuned by Cosmos were made for limited production. They came at a high price for their rarity… But their performance backed that up.

Arion Concept 2000 '00

Using the engine from the Cassiopeia and a bunch of advanced technologies the Concept 2000 was put on display at Arion’s headquarters, after being revealed at a special dinner party on the Aruna household grounds.

Arion Mythos '01

The revival of the Mythos name came with a new and improved aerodynamic body, and an economical, fuel-efficient yet powerful 3.5L V8. This new sporty sedan was quite a stylish looker, with slick curvy lines giving it a luxurious feel.

Mythos in Arion Ruby Pearl

The Mythos came with two transmission options: An Advanced Automatic 5 speed, or a Sequential 6 speed. Despite it’s heavy weight it was rather sporty feeling, which delivered an exciting ride for customers.

Mythos (Sequential) in Arion White Adder

As usual with most Arion models a GL trim grade featured, with a much more lush interior and silky smooth suspension setup. There was minimal changes to the body besides badging and the higher grade wheels.

Mythos GL in Arion Amethyst Starling

A sport model was also released later, that featured re-worked aero on the front bumper and undertray, as well as including an active aero lip spoiler that is deployable at the press of a button, or automatically at 60mph+.

Mythos Sport in Arion Hellfire II

Commissioned by the UK Police force, an undercover specification Mythos was produced for the police interceptors and motorway patrol. It included a magnetic siren, as well as front and rear hidden red and blue lights. Soon becoming the bane of lawbreakers all over the country, the Mythos did a great job for the force, being comfy and of great performance.

Arion Polaris '01

In the past Arion released the Caelum, an SUV similar to this new Polaris but it was less successful from it’s lack of affordability to the common market. However this changed with Polaris, there were options for a 2.7L Inline 5 with either a Turbocharger or natural aspiration mounted to a 4x4 drivetrain. This provided cheap running costs on both whilst still having great off-roading and general drivability.

Polaris (ME) in Arion Ruby Pearl & Furcoat two-tone

The Polaris was quite a new kind of vehicle for Arion, not really creating many off-road capable vehicles in the past, they were able to make it handle very well despite that. It was extremely well received to the northern parts of England, the moorlands and rural areas of Scotland especially. Polaris was as good off-road as it was durable and reliable on the basic models, as customers would expect. Where-as the higher end models required more maintenance, and were more common in more accessible areas of Great Britain.

Polaris (Budget) in Arion Emerald Pearl

Internationally the Polaris was extremely popular in the Middle-east and Asia, being a common premium-budget car there, and sometimes even a GL model was spotted.

Polaris (Budget-Turbo) in Arion Masamune Metallic

The GL trim was a common sight in posher areas in the world, being the go-to car for large families with bundles of money to spare on a big bulky luxury SUV.

Polaris (GL) in Arion Glossy Starling Iridescent & Black two-tone

New to Arion, a special limited edition “GL-Limited” was announced and sold. There was overall 1,000 units made and sold, each being painted in Cosmos Pearl III, a classic Arion limited edition colour. These GL-Limited came with special hand-made interiors and even had an experimental Electromagnetic suspension that provided an epic amount of comfort, but little road feel which gave it mixed thoughts from most people.

Arion Fortuna '01

A brand new model release from Arion for 2001 was the Fortuna. A sporty GT car with the same engines used in the Mythos and Polaris. It was quite a sensational car, great looks and a dynamic, exciting driving feel to it.

Fortuna (ME) in Arion Ruby Pearl & White stripe

The Fortuna featured a 4 seater layout with just enough room in the back for 2 adults, and a boot space to fit golf bags in, or even fold down the seats to keep snowboarding or ski equipment in. The spaciousness made it rather popular among it’s economy being high for a sports car.

Fortuna (Budget) in Arion Masamune Metallic

The curvy abstract facia was brought from the previous concepts of the 2000’s and it shone into life finally in the production Fortuna. The clear lenses on the taillights were hit and miss with most people, but the interesting quad headlight front facia was quite a sporty looker from any angle.

Fortuna (Budget-Turbo) Arion Onyx Pearl

The Sport model enhanced the sporty feeling of the Fortuna further, fitted with a 4.0L V16 TwinTurbo that boasted 527hp, and a soundly 10,000rpm redline that brought fans in, making it quite a cult classic for the future to hold onto.

All three of those cars look top-notch and very comfy.

All three of these cars succeeded in bringing the brand up to date for the 21st century - and for good reason. They not only looked the part, but had the performance and dynamics to back up their panache - and had sumptuous interiors to boot.

My favorite among these first few 2000s Arions is the Fortuna. It would not look out of place in Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec or Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 - not just for the way it looks, but also for the way it drives. And I actually like the bug-eyed front end you gave it, which reminds me of an Alpine A110 or Mercedes CLK, but with slightly better proportions.

And by 2006, it may well have experienced an uptick in sales due to a whole section of Palmont City (the setting of Need for Speed: Carbon) being named after it. Considering that Fortuna is one of the city’s wealthier districts, it’s only fitting.
