Team Big Blue

There will be no RP for this leg because Team Big Blue, like most of the other teams, is asleep right now. However, Paul has a hunch that one of his opponents brazenly decided to drive on through the night and find a rest stop further west, while another will arrive later than expected.

#164

Paul seems to be clairvoyant in his sleep.

Highway Hooligans

Day 1, 10p-12a, Day 2 - “Terrible Tired Titles”

With the Hooligans deeply asleep (or, in Trevor’s case, passed out), the night continued just fine. In the room next door, their windshield-wiper-powered bed-slamming mechanism continued slamming the bed, though at a greatly reduced pace as the motorcycle battery powering it was starting to fade.

Some time around 2 in the morning, the motor made its last great movement, and the motel went quiet.

Also at 2 in the morning, Jake asked Marcus, in between bathroom runs, “What happens if someone drove through the night?”

“They gotta sleep sometime. It’s their choice whether to sleep in a tent, sleep in a hotel, or sleep behind the wheel. Only difference I see is you sleep better in a hotel room, nature inspires you in a campground, and a truck flattens your dumb ass behind the wheel.” Marcus said.

“I see. I suppose that’s one way to look at it.”

“Yeah, well, go get some sleep, Jake. We’ve got that gasoline smell to fix in a few hours or so.”

Aftermath:

Morale: +5 (No Change)
Fatigue: +10 (-8)
Waypoints: 5
Status: Sleeping, perhaps a bit more peacefully now than before.

Team redneck Day 2 00:00-0200

Otis wakes Jake up as he pulls into Jeffrey City, WY “Wake up, were almost to the hotel.”

Jake, “This isn’t Evansville, where are we?”

Otis, “Its Jeffrey, another 110 miles further, Ill get us a room while you take the truck and fill it up.”

Jake looks down the vacant looking road, “Uh Where, this place is a ghost town, for that matter where the heck is the hotel”

Otis, “Their Facebook page says to turn left here, then right at the fork then follow the road to it. At least none of the other competitors will be able to find us.”

Jake, “Yeah all of the trucks here look as bad or worse than ours.”

Otis, "Yeah, but something tells me these folks still make a good living.

They pull up to a building that looks a bit run down, but the clerk/owner turns out to be friendly and the rooms surprisingly clean and comfortable. She also tells them that the cafe down the road is the only place open, and it has one fuel pump outside as well.

After a shower the two head to bed.

TEAM OUTRIDERS

(Blake has been driving through the night, for several hours he has been fighting boredom. Plus fatigue is starting to catch up with him.)

Blake: (groan) yawn God this is insane!

(Time passes, things start to seem less real. The road, what little traffic there is, signs, landmarks. They all start to begin blurring into one entity.)

Blake: (slaps himself in the face) Snap out of it old man! What time is it?

(The clock shows he’s been on the road for four and a half hours. 30 minutes after the planned switch would’ve taken place.)

Radio: Rough night?

Blake: …

Radio: Hey, I’m talking to you Blake. You having a rough night?

Blake: Just my imagination.

Radio: That’s right, so that should tell you something about your state of mind don’t it? Your nerves are shot!

Blake: Shut up, I’ve just been on the road a little too long. Just a little further to go.

Radio: That’s what they all say right? Right before they end up on the morning news flipped over in a ditch.

Blake: It won’t come to that.

Radio: Sure it won’t, you’ll be asleep long before that happens. Won’t have a clue what hit you. Just the long stretch of road, almost no traffic, the others in the car are asleep so there’s no noise…

Blake: (nods, then jerks up) Stop it!

Radio: I’m not doing anything, as you said I’m not even talking. It’s your own mind that’s screwing with you, not me.

Blake: Deep breath, it’s just your imagination playing tricks on you.

(sputter)

Radio: Uh oh!

Blake: Oh no, now what?

Radio: Sounds like that lingering doubt. The one that’s been bothering you since you started. That maybe you’re tempting fate with this car. Maybe she’s breathed her final breath!

Blake: Shut up!

(sputter, cough)

Blake: No no no no no!

(The Enforcer loses power. Blake pulls over to the side of the road. He pops the hood, then gets out to take a look. A brief check shows nothing seems amiss, he closes the hood and gets back in the car to think.)

Radio: Car trouble?

Blake: Shut up! Okay, think. What does a car need to run? Compression, Ignition source, Air/fuel mixture… Fuel!

(A quick glance at the instrument cluster shows the fuel gauge indeed reads empty.)

Radio: I’ve got enough fuel, I can make the distance. I distinctively remember you saying that.

Blake: Actually I was thinking it, not saying it.

Radio: Whatever, I’m just your imagination run amok.

(Blake gets out and grabs the emergency gas can kept in the trunk.)

Zach: yawn What’s going on? We’re stopped.

(Zach looks over to see his dad pouring the gas can into the tank. Once finished, Blake returns the can to the trunk and gets back in the car.)

Zach: What happened?

Blake: Ran out, I miscalculated how far we could go. With that gas can, we should be able to make Douglas.

Zach: You okay?

Blake: Yeah, just a bit drowsy. A long stretch of road with no sound in the car will do that you know.

Zach: You want me to drive?

Blake: Nah, I’ve got it. Once we get some gas, you’re taking over.

(The Enforcer arrives without incident at a gas station in Douglas, WY)

Blake: I’m gonna get some snacks, you want anything?

Zach: Some coffee.

Blake: You got it.

(Zach fills the tank of the car and the emergency can. He hears a commotion inside the gas station, he looks over to see a man pointing a gun at the clerk. The man grabs the money and runs out the door, Zach points the fuel nozzle at him and sprays him down. The shock of this causes the man to drop the gun. Blake grabs a cigarette lighter off the counter and runs outside to the thief.)

Blake: (lights lighter) I don’t think you want to go for that gun!

Thief: Don’t set me on fire! (puts his hands up)

Blake: Zach, grab that gun. We’re all just going to sit tight and wait for the police to show up.

(Fortunately a patrol car was not too far off. The thief was thrown in the back of the car and a report was filed. The officer left though he did complain about how his car was going to smell like gas for a while.)

Zach: Did that… did that really just happen?

Blake: Good instinct. I find it kind of hard to believe myself but here we are.

Zach: Well, we’re all set here, so lets hit the road.

(The team sets off. Marc and Luigi are sleeping in the back seat, Blake is riding shotgun, and Zach is now driving.)

TEAM WAGONS WEST

2PM-4PM
Heading along the highway, Wagons West were conducting a significant debate…
Bill - Well, what if it did happen? It’s possible that society, at least in the U.S., could end up like that.
Wookiee - I’ll give that a maybe, but Fallout is a GAME!! It’s no more real than The Fantastic Four.
Beth - So, the radiation from a nuclear war could give people super powers?
Wookiee - //eye roll// Toni, can I go home now?

4PM-6PM
With Bill still behind the wheel, the others are busy playing “back seat driver”, where they take turns criticising his decisions.
Beth: You were far too close when you went around that car.
Wookiee : Faster would have been better.
Toni: Yes. Faster, but we all know how likely that is.

6PM-8PM
Beth: “Sutherland Reservoir State Recreation Area”. Hey look. Google Maps thingy. We’re half an hour from… Ollyollayilliliya. There’s a macca’s there.
Bill: No. Not stopping. I drive too slowly. Find something in the back.
Wookiee: Bill, you’re a dick. Even I’m getting hungry.
Bill: No. I’m a Bill. You’re a dick, Dick.
Toni: Wait, do you actually know his name?
Bill: Do now. Score 1, Bill!!!

Highway Hooligans

Day 2, 2-4a - “Nothing Really Happened. No, Seriously.”

As 6 AM rolled around, Jake’s phone went off as the alarm clock, with the lovely sound of a tornado siren.

“God damn it, what the fuck!? Why would you do that!?” Trevor groaned, still hung over after last night’s drinks.

“6 in the morning. Gives us an hour for breakfast, then we get the fuck outta here at 7.” Jake said.

Marcus got out of bed, then grabbed a magazine and smacked Cody in the back with it.

“OW! What the fuck is wrong with you!?”

“Wake up call! We don’t have time for you to pull your usual two-hour wake up. Breakfast, then we head out. Be ready to leave at 7 or we’re leaving you here.” Marcus said.

“What we oughta do is ruin other people’s mornings. Food fight, perhaps, during breakfast.” Jake commented, giving a stupid grin.

“Sounds like a good plan. We’ll have a good laugh.”

Aftermath:

Morale: +6 (+1)
Fatigue: -2 (-2)
Waypoints: 5
Status: Team is awake and eating breakfast. Potential for a Food Fight in the Motel with other people at the Bunkhouse Motel.

Friday, Time: 0501 hours

“Wake up, ya comrades!” Yells Charles, already packing up his sleeping bag. Both, James and Nathan look up from their sleeping bags, slightly annoyed, but expecting nothing less. Charles was already up and ready for breakfast, but as usual, he was actually in a light sleep trance.

James gets up and slaps him across the face, SMACK! “Wake up Charles, it’s two thousand seventeen!” Charles snaps out of his trance, suddenly confused as to where he was and how he got here. He takes a second to look around, remembering where he was. He is quiet for a while as they get breakfast ready on the warm coals left over from another team’s campfire.

After breakfast, they get ready to leave. Charles starts getting excited, as he starts packing up the trunk he calls out, “I’m driving! I get to since Nathan broke it! Let’s go scallywags!”

Nathan and James stood together watching this unfold.
“He’s dead set on driving it,” commented James.
“Yep,” replied Nathan.
J: “No changing his mind now.”
N: “Nope.”
J: “He’s going to break something.”
N: “Yep.”
J: “And it’s probably not going to be a small fix either.”
N: “Nope.”
James says, “I call back seat.”
“Wait, what?” asks Nathan.
“I don’t want to deal with the cop when we get pulled over.”
James walks over to the car, as Nathan looks on slightly baffled, but without a choice.
