(Blake has been driving through the night, for several hours he has been fighting boredom. Plus fatigue is starting to catch up with him.)
Blake: (groan) yawn God this is insane!
(Time passes, things start to seem less real. The road, what little traffic there is, signs, landmarks. They all start to begin blurring into one entity.)
Blake: (slaps himself in the face) Snap out of it old man! What time is it?
(The clock shows he’s been on the road for four and a half hours. 30 minutes after the planned switch would’ve taken place.)
Radio: Rough night?
Radio: Hey, I’m talking to you Blake. You having a rough night?
Blake: Just my imagination.
Radio: That’s right, so that should tell you something about your state of mind don’t it? Your nerves are shot!
Blake: Shut up, I’ve just been on the road a little too long. Just a little further to go.
Radio: That’s what they all say right? Right before they end up on the morning news flipped over in a ditch.
Blake: It won’t come to that.
Radio: Sure it won’t, you’ll be asleep long before that happens. Won’t have a clue what hit you. Just the long stretch of road, almost no traffic, the others in the car are asleep so there’s no noise…
Blake: (nods, then jerks up) Stop it!
Radio: I’m not doing anything, as you said I’m not even talking. It’s your own mind that’s screwing with you, not me.
Blake: Deep breath, it’s just your imagination playing tricks on you.
Radio: Uh oh!
Blake: Oh no, now what?
Radio: Sounds like that lingering doubt. The one that’s been bothering you since you started. That maybe you’re tempting fate with this car. Maybe she’s breathed her final breath!
Blake: Shut up!
Blake: No no no no no!
(The Enforcer loses power. Blake pulls over to the side of the road. He pops the hood, then gets out to take a look. A brief check shows nothing seems amiss, he closes the hood and gets back in the car to think.)
Radio: Car trouble?
Blake: Shut up! Okay, think. What does a car need to run? Compression, Ignition source, Air/fuel mixture… Fuel!
(A quick glance at the instrument cluster shows the fuel gauge indeed reads empty.)
Radio: I’ve got enough fuel, I can make the distance. I distinctively remember you saying that.
Blake: Actually I was thinking it, not saying it.
Radio: Whatever, I’m just your imagination run amok.
(Blake gets out and grabs the emergency gas can kept in the trunk.)
Zach: yawn What’s going on? We’re stopped.
(Zach looks over to see his dad pouring the gas can into the tank. Once finished, Blake returns the can to the trunk and gets back in the car.)
Zach: What happened?
Blake: Ran out, I miscalculated how far we could go. With that gas can, we should be able to make Douglas.
Zach: You okay?
Blake: Yeah, just a bit drowsy. A long stretch of road with no sound in the car will do that you know.
Zach: You want me to drive?
Blake: Nah, I’ve got it. Once we get some gas, you’re taking over.
(The Enforcer arrives without incident at a gas station in Douglas, WY)
Blake: I’m gonna get some snacks, you want anything?
Zach: Some coffee.
Blake: You got it.
(Zach fills the tank of the car and the emergency can. He hears a commotion inside the gas station, he looks over to see a man pointing a gun at the clerk. The man grabs the money and runs out the door, Zach points the fuel nozzle at him and sprays him down. The shock of this causes the man to drop the gun. Blake grabs a cigarette lighter off the counter and runs outside to the thief.)
Blake: (lights lighter) I don’t think you want to go for that gun!
Thief: Don’t set me on fire! (puts his hands up)
Blake: Zach, grab that gun. We’re all just going to sit tight and wait for the police to show up.
(Fortunately a patrol car was not too far off. The thief was thrown in the back of the car and a report was filed. The officer left though he did complain about how his car was going to smell like gas for a while.)
Zach: Did that… did that really just happen?
Blake: Good instinct. I find it kind of hard to believe myself but here we are.
Zach: Well, we’re all set here, so lets hit the road.
(The team sets off. Marc and Luigi are sleeping in the back seat, Blake is riding shotgun, and Zach is now driving.)
