OOC INFORMATION

Since I decided to do a third and hopefully last reconstruction of this company, I decided that there was no way to get a good overview and structure in my old thread anymore. I could not really do what I wanted with the company in 2018, now Automation, and my knowledge and inspiration, have improved so I finally can do what I want. So old thread is not actual anymore for anything but archive purpouses. And yes, some things about the company and cars might seem dorky, but there is reasons behind most of the things, as well as being in a fictive country in the pacific rim, it might seem a bit weird too but since nobody has been complaining about for example Maesima, I feel that it’s not necessarily anything wrong with that.

HISTORICAL MODELS: 1973-79 IP LILY

The fifth generation Lily, internally called the “F50” was an answer to a market wanting larger, more plush, more luxurious cars even in this class. That was also the reason why the Lily grew so much in size. At 249 centimeters the wheelbase was almost a decimeter longer compared to its predecessor, around 434 cm in length it was nearly two and a half decimeters longer, and it was also around five centimeters wider. That also lead to a gain in weight, from weighing well under a tonne, all models now had passed the magical 1000 kg limit. To offer an alternative to people that thought the Lily had grown too much in size, IP also introduced the somewhat smaller Warbler in 1973, being closer to the older Lily models in size.

Technically, it inherited much from its predecessor though. The strut suspension up front was tried and true since many years, and the for its class advanced independent rear suspension that was introduced with the F40 was of course still there. The switch to front wheel drive was still many years away in this class, so the 4L series engine that we already knew from the F40 still was propelling the rear wheels. However, IP could now also offer a version with a longer front end and the 6L series inline six, called the “Lily 6 America”, hinting at how it was aimed at the US market.

HISTORICAL MODELS: 1994-97 IP RUBIQ

Thanks to the positive reactions on the similarily named concept car shown at the 1989 Tokyo motor show, IP decided to put the Rubiq (internally called B10) into series production. Built only between 1994 and 1997, and in quite limited numbers, it kept its status as something of a “niche” model, in some ways it could be seen as an early crossover, based on mechanical components from the front wheel drive IP Commuter as it was. The boxy, rugged styling was seen as “retro”, “chic” and “practical”, but maybe hinted at offroad capabilities that it really did not have. After its 3 year limited production run, it never recieved a direct replacement. Instead, the Rexetta got a “downgrade” from being a body-on-frame SUV to a more passenger car-like crossover, though at least having AWD instead of the Rubiq’s FWD. The somewhat smaller IP DM3 kept going with a FWD platform and a boxy styling though, however without having any offroading styling cues at all.

The Rubiq reminds me of the original Toyota RAV4 - a soft-roader built using an existing passenger car platform, but with more ground clearance for better all-terrain ability. Given its boxy styling, however, the lack of an AWD option seems odd to me, and may explain why it didn’t last very long.

#6

Yes, the same problem that plagued the grandfather of the softroaders, the Talbot Matra Rancho. (Which, if going OOC, was one of the inspirations, as well as the Nissan Rasheen, which however was AWD).

When the sixth generation Commuter was released in 1991, it dropped the AWD option available only on the fifth generation, probably due to lack of demand, being a price premium on what still was a car in the compact class. The Rubiq was more or less rushed out using parts from the Commuter, and thoughts were probably that the first generation Rexetta from 1993 would fill the demand for people wanting a more passenger car like offroader than the Brigadier and Terrex lines, maybe at the price of capability. But with the Rexetta still being built on a BOF platform, with part time 4WD and a solid rear axle, it was mainly cannibalizing on the Terrex sales while not reaching the audience it was intended for. Cars like the RAV4, Forester and Seikatsu CAT4 now had shown what a soft roader should look like.

The 2000 Rexetta was a completely different story, with its unibody platform, 4 wheel independent suspension and transverse AWD, and was in one way the spiritual successor to the Rubiq, though with a very much toned down styling in comparision.

HISTORICAL MODELS: 2006-12 IP DRYAD

With the market for sedans rapidly shrinking, and with the models coming too close each other in size, cannibalizing on each other, IP decided to phase out three old nameplates. The first one that was axed was the Lily in 2005, leading to some surprise, since with its roots in 1948, it was the oldest nameplate in the IP lineup. 2006 meant the end for the Commuter, produced since 1966, and the Warbler, produced since 1973. 2006 also meant the introduction of the model that should replace all three of the lines, the IP Dryad, or UF10 as its internal model code called it.

With its 2.67 metre wheelbase and length of 4.6 metres it was near the last generation Lily in size, and slotted in between the smaller Colibri and the larger Vagant. Probably a wise position on the market since the demand for small sedans was constantly shrinking. Styling-wise it was on the careful side. Some critics said that it looked old-fashioned already as new, but on the other hand, it was aimed at pretty conservative buyers, that might have been scared away by too progressive styling.

Technically, new for this class was the increased use of AHS steel, meaning that the body was sturdier and safer than ever before without gaining any extreme amounts of weight. It was, of course, front wheel drive, and the strut suspension up front was a tried and true concept since many years. Also, the multilink rear suspension that first appeared on the fifth generation Warbler continued to serve its purpouse.

The first generation Dryad for the international market was produced until the 2012 model year. However, production for the Chinese and Russian market continued until 2018 at the Changsha plant.

HISTORICAL MODELS: 1991-95 IP COMMUTER

The Commuter series was released in 1966 as an economical compact car, and when the sixth iteration was released 25 years later, it continued the tradition. It was of course front wheel drive, as it had been since the fourth generation was launched in 1981, the short lived AWD option only available on the fifth generation was dropped, the lineup was also reduced to only include three bodystyles, a two- or four door sedan as well as a five door station wagon.

Technically there was many similarities with its predecessor, the semi-trailing arm rear suspension stayed, as well as the strut suspension up front. The number of engines available were cut down to three, though. All being inline 4-cylinders with a displacement of 1.4, 1.6 or 2 litres, the 2 litre only available in the sporty “GTX” trim. Even though not being the fastest among the compact cars, the GTX had quite a cult following, low weight and one of the most well-balanced FWD chassis in its class as well as still having kind of a lively performance with its 2 litre engine made it popular among people wanting a sporty and still somewhat practical car on a budget.

As a sign of the times, the 1994 model got a heavy update of the safety equipment on most markets, with things like a drivers side air bag and side impact beams in the doors.

The production for the international market ended in 1995, however, since there still was demand for the model in the Latin american market, production at the Hermosillo plant actually continued all the way to 2017 for some of the Latin american countries.

THE ROAD TO RETRO:PART 1
Story of the IP Retroad series

With 50s nostalgia getting kind of a revival in the late 80s, IP gave many people a pleasant surprise when they announced that the Retroad-1 should be produced in a limited number of 1000 vehicles.

To save development costs, the base for the Retroad-1 was the first generation IP Urbana supermini. Empty, but complete, bodies were sent from the factory to Sai Thang composite works, that was the manufacturer of the fiberglass bodyshell. Most of the Urbana shell, except for the structural parts, were cut away. To compensate for the roof now being fiberglass, it was strenghtened underneath like a convertible, even if the roof itself had some reinforcements too, to be strong enough to serve as a seatbelt mounting and to not collapse in a rollover.

With the fiberglass bodyshell in place, it was shipped to IMOS (IP Motorsport Services) that did the final assembly more or less by hand. The engines were sourced from the Urbana Turbo, which itself had been developed by IMOS a couple of years earlier, however, being more of a chic little city car than a hot hatch, the wheels now were powered by the 3AT160 automatic transmission instead of the 5MT150 manual found in the Urbana Turbo. Also, extra accessories like power steering and air conditioning also ate some power before they could reach the wheels. But with 84 hp in a 757 kg car, it still had decent performance, 0-100 was done in 12.3 seconds and the top speed was 168 km/h, not impressive by todays standard but seen as adequate in a small car back then.

The upright shape gave the small hatchback a surprising amount of room inside, so the design was not only about looking good, it was practical too. The inspirations was said to be countless. Everything from the second generation IP Lily, to 50s german cars like Borgwards and Opels, to yanks like the 1955 Chevy Nomad and 1957 Pontiac Star chief, to the “Fintail” Mercedes S-class. And it was never meant to look old, rather to look “retro” with a modern twist, which was why it, for example, used composite headlights.

It was available in the whole IP Colour palette, but the roof was always painted caramel tan, except on cars painted pure white, satin white pearl or caramel tan where the roof instead was available in Poppy red or Crimson metallic. The interior was upholstered in leather and crushed velour matching the outside. The colour matched dashboard continued the retro theme with Lucas inspired toggle switches, white faced central mounted gauges and a bamboo parcel shelf under the whole width of the dash instead of a glovebox. The 2 spoke steering wheel was painted caramel tan and featured a chrome horn ring, which however was made of a flexible plastic for safety reasons.

Even the equipment was kind of retro themed, with a huge canvas sunroof, two small yellow foglights up front, wire wheel covers and 12 inch whide whitewall radials specially tailored for the Retroad cars (and a pain to find replacements for today). But it also featured modern equipment like power steering, electric windows and mirrors, air conditioning, a top of the line stereo system and other things that made it feel like a little luxury cruiser.

The series of 1000 cars was sold more or less as soon as it was announced. All of them were of the 1987 model year, and it was decided that there should be a series for each year in 1988, 1989 and 1990 too, the Retroad-2, 3 and 4 models, which we will come to later.

Today, a Retroad-1 is of course a valuable collectors item.

HISTORICAL MODELS: 1982-92 IP URBANA

In 1982, the first generation IP Urbana was released as a smaller, cheaper alternative to the IP Colibri, since many people thought it had grown a bit too much compared to what it originally was. An all new series of all aluminium SOHC engines was also developed for the model, but the chassis had similarities to the Colibri with its front strut suspension and solid axle with coil springs in the rear, and like in the Colibri, as well as in most other cars in this class, it was mounted sideways and driving the front wheels. There was only one bodystyle available, a 3-door hatchback.

In 1985 the Colibri got a small facelift, where the largest differences was the sealed beam headlights now got light covers to look more like modern composite units, and that the mirrors were moved from the front fenders to the doors. Another thing new for 1985 was the introduction of the turbocharged GTT models. Its 84 hp engine hardly made it a rocket with a 0-100 time of 11.2 seconds and 186 km/h top speed, but combined with a sportier chassis setting and grippy low profile tyres it still made the light car very fun to drive.

In 1988, the base 1 litre engine got its carburetor changed for a single point injection system and all engines now featured a catalytic converter as standard equipment, and the 4 speed manual available in the base “S” model disappeared. In 1990, the GTT got axed due to slow sales. The R10 IP Urbana was produced until the 1992 model year, when it got replaced by the all new R20 generation.
