Kadett AG

History

The Kadett Motor Company was founded in 1960 by Dieter Kadett, his first business venture since the dissolution of the Kadett-Lewis Motor Co. , a company that built tanks during WW2.

After buying back and renovating a previous Kadett-Lewis factory near Erfurt, Kadett and his 13 employees started designing their first car. The end result was the 1965 Kadett QM. It wasn’t until the 1970 Kadett 400 however, when they put themselves on the map. The 400 sedan set the standard for Kadett, making sporty and luxurious cars. 5 years later, they entered the full-size luxury vehicle market with the 800 sedan.

In 1995, Kadett started changing it’s naming nomenclature with the replacement for the 400, the Kadett F4. The F4 was followed by the F1 in 1999 and the F8 in 2000. Their first-ever SUV, the FX7, was launched in 2007.

Is it possible that we have a… quirky German car company? :open_mouth:

How so. So far this looks like literally every german car company ever.

To an extent sure. But these look interesting, and different! Full length rear taillights with a cool design in them for signals and reverse lights, and the almost Japanese-esc headlights don’t look as German, boring, by-the-numbers as usual.

Very nice designs. Very american engine choices tho.

@Awildgermanappears I’ll take that as a compliment

@Knightophonix Thanks for liking designs! The engines are quite big because I don’t really know who to squeeze more power out of smaller ones.

I stand corrected: you are very american.

For reference the base model 2018 BMW 1 series has a 1.5L three cylinder turbodiesel giving 95hp. Your base engine for the F3 is a 235hp V6 lmao

1965 - 1969

Kadett QM (1965-1970)

After years of development, the Kadett QM was put into limited-production. The first offical model rolled off the production line in 1965 and soon after, it went on sale. For the first year, the QM was available with a 1.5 liter Inline-6. It generated 88hp @ 5800rpm and had a top speed of 153km/h. This engine is notable for using fuel injection instead of carburetors.

However, the QM was priced fairly high thanks to some advanced features such as its Hydropneumatic suspension and Hydraulic power steering. The base price was $9715, apprx. $78000 in today’s money. This high price didn’t make it a sales leader, but it was popular enough to keep Kadett afloat.

For 1966, a 2.5l I6 was introduced. The engine was still mounted to a 5-speed manual and now had 142hp. Interestingly, the new engine had 2-valves per cylinder compared to the 3-valve design in the 1.5.

The 2.5 lasted only for 3 years before being discontinued thanks to a lack of buyers.

The final engine option was introduced for 1968. It was a 3.9l V8, with a SOHC 3-valve design and, unlike the earlier two engines, featured carburetors instead of fuel injection. The singular transmission option was a 3-speed auto. The top speed was 203km/h and the 0-60 time was 7.7 seconds.

Kadett BM (1968-1973)

Three years after the production was started for the QM, Kadett launched their first full out production car. The BM was introduced to the public in 1968.

Powering the original BM was a 1.3l I4, making 58hp and 95Nm of torque. It was mated to a 4-speed manual and weighed around 798kg.

Like the QM, the BM was not a huge sales success. Most of that can be contributed to the price. A base model BM started around $7980, or about $58000 today.

For 1969, Kadett decided to have a little fun with the BM and as such, they stuck a 2.0 I4 into the engine bay. It now made 102hp and achieved a top speed of 172km/h. The 2.0 was, as expected, an even bigger sales failure thanks to the price tag of around $8910, $61400 today.

The BM was discontinued in 1973.
