One Last Hurrah [FINAL RESULTS]

Team Shitbox Brothers

(You know the drill with the accents)

Gramps GT keeps roaring, as it burns through its fuel reserves towards the finish line.

Ana: “We’ll have to stop soon. We haven’t much fuel left, let’s not wait for a cough. We’re stopping at the next petrol station.”

Alejandro: “Gotcha. By the way, our pace is great. Looks like we passed the Truckling and the Bogliq while they were refueling.”

Ana: “They’ll probably pass us when we refuel, but…what place are we in again?”

Alejandro: “Third.”

Ana grabs the microphone on her radio

Ana: “Oi, Vandals! We said we would overtake you and we did! That also goes for you, Mountain Pass!” Ana laughs “Although we’re short on fuel, you’ll probably catch us back soon.”

And with this and the few litres of fuel left in the tank, Gramps GT kept roaring off towards the next petrol station.

Mopey: Oh GOD! There’s something wrong!

Gran: What is it?

Spanners: No warning lights…no spluttering…no power loss…and the engine is still running.

Mopey: Just had an update…we’re leading the race!

Gran: Are we going too fast then?

Mopey & Spanners: NOOOOOO!

Spanners: We have a good pace and we’re not stressing the car so everything is fine. I suggest we carry on until 9pm, have supper and an early night. Up at 5am and on the road by 6. OK?

Mopey: Fine by me.

Gran: That’s a good idea.

Mopey: And the best news is we’ve got no sherry!

Spanners: Thank Christ for that!

Gran: Yes dear…

Team Mushroom Cloud… Saturday

6AM-8AM
Wookiee was driving a little less aggresively than the other two would have been, but that wasn’t a problem. His fascination with tracks and trails should be enough for the upcoming “twist”. Someone had decided there’d be a detour today, and when the man-bear heard of a pretend pathfinding stretch he got all excited-like.
Wookiee: Bill, you’re the “navigator”, how far away is the fun?
Bill: You hurt my head. The way you drive, two hours or so. Get the lead out.
Wookiee: You clearly didn’t understand the question, so, in fact, you hurt my head. I asked for distance, not time.
Bill: Over one hundred kays.
As the car changed to top gear, it sounded like it was trying to die.
Bill: Ooh, that’s new.
Toni: Maybe if this car wasn’t worn half to death.

8AM-10AM
The next hundred or so Km was covered in, let’s say, a little under 2 hours.
Bill: So, now you get your opportunity to get us lost where we can die. Map says the detour is just ahead. And… there’s the first sign.
Toni: You’re partly to blame to, boy. You bought the car.
Bill: You entered us in the race.
Wookiee: YOU didn’t have to come along. Why are we having this argument again?
GPS: Signal Lost. Searching.
Bill: Great.
Wookiee took great delight in spending the next hour and a bit in complete control of their progress, alternating between reading the map (with Toni’s help) and actually driving. There was a point where, admittedly, he was forced to reverse around a blind corner because he missed a turn. IT all worked out well, because Bill didn’t say a word… unless “AAAAAAHHHH!!!” when the car is being chased by a bear counts.

10AM-12PM
Sure, the ride had been a little rough, but they’d gotten through. They’d been expecting the car to simply die since they entered the detour, but it had held up.
Bill: Aunt Toni, is this ticking the same as the sound Mr Hankey had?
Toni: No. That was a trashed lifter. Disclaimer, my hearing isn’t what it used to be. Could be a few things, I might have a look at it when we stop… unless it dies first.
Bill: You said that it wasn’t a problem back then.
Toni: It wasn’t.

12PM-2PM
At a fuel stop in Munising, Toni grabbed a bottle of oil thickener, but adding it didn’t seem to alleviate the issue. Toni suggested that Wookie keep driving until the end of the day, but as of tomorrow, they might start to mix it up a little…maybe.
After convincing the car to run, the trip to the next town became interesting. Bill noticed a car that looked familiar closing behind them. It turned out to be the grey Ceder sedan, the one with the old guy, sorry Aunt Toni, I mean distinguished.
By 2:00, the Ceder had just passed them, an event Bill had been dreading since realising they were there.

2PM-4PM
They’ve since regained the ground lost to the Ceder without mishap, knowing full well it wasn’t going to stay that way.
Bill (who is now front passenger): Says we’ve got to go through Duluth.
Wookiee: That’s where we’ll stop for the night. I think I will have had enough of this car by then. How come they always break when I’m driving.
Bill: 'Cause you’re a shit driver.
Toni (from the back seat): Luck, Wookiee. Luck. Bill, stop trying to fight with him. You’re both acting like you did in the KGT.
Bill: Would you expect something different? Trapped in here with him.
Wookiee: Mutton-head, find a place to sleep in Duluth, then pretend you can navigate. Or use your GPS, then I won’t have to listen to you.
Bill: I’d like to say it’d be my pleasure, but I don’t feel like lying.
Toni hit both seat backs form behind…HARD
Wookiee muttered something that earned him a plastic drink bottle to the head fro the back seat.

4PM-6PM
Wookiee: From somewhere called Bessemer to Duluth in 2 hours. That’s like, a personal best!
Bill: You’ve done that before?
Wookiee: No, dipstick. But it’s still my best time for the run, isn’t it?
Toni: We need fuel. And so does this wonder-can.
Bill: Wonder-can, Aunt Toni?
Toni: Yes, Wonder-can. Like a Rolls-Canardly. I often “wonder can it keep going?”.
Wookiee laughed (he’s contractually obligated)
Bill led them to a fuel stop, then found Sammy’s Pizza on North 1st West. An argument broke out about the presence of pineapple on pizza with the folks on the next table, then they drove around to the Downtown Duluth Inn on West 2nd Street for an early night. Turns out, the place was booked, so they figured they’d get a little more road time. Bill convinced them to find a museum tomorrow, he needed his history dose.

Day 3, 2 - 4PM

Day Three, 4PM to 6PM

Pushing onwards to Duluth we started really feeling the burn. The Bogliq had become our home away from home for three days now and it was really starting to grate on us. There wasn’t much shoulder room, the boot opening was too small, the RWD ‘hump’ was too intrusive and the shitty, all-iron turbo four was a bland, soulless hunk of turd!

Needless to say, we were cheering inside when we arrived at Duluth. We stopped off for more petrol, where we received another message from Team Shitbox over the CB.They were crowing about overtaking us or some such nonsense. We didn’t rise to the challenge; we were too hungry and tired!

After refueling we arrived at Duluth Grill, pretty much the only restaurant in town, and proceeded to unwind. Andrew ordered a Duluth Grill Burger with a side of fries and I ordered a Reuben Sandwich with onion rings. This was followed by a Banana Cream Pie each, as well as a couple of apple ciders each to wash it all down with…

This is going to take us a while so I’ll see you next session!

Day 3, 4 - 6PM

Day Three, 6PM to 8PM

When we finished having dinner at the Duluth Grill it was clear to me that Andrew was looking as tired as I felt. Getting into the Bogliq was like putting on dirty clothes after having a hot bath! We both wanted to stop but we both wanted to win…

A: “Pierre, check that list. We’re stopping at the end of this session but I want something far away to stretch for.”

P: “Are you sure? We could find something here…”

A: “Nope. I want to win, or at least finish well, so one final push and we stop for the night”

P: “I’ll find a place… Let’s go!”

So we pressed on. We kept our eye on the prize and Andrew drove like a trooper. He wasn’t even phased by the light rain that had set in… We were too tired to do anything but drive, count down the distance left to our lodgings for the night and listen to the radio. I’d found a nice place in Whipholt called the Trapper Landing Lodge so when we finally arrived there, Andrew visibly slumped. He was done for the day.

I got our key, got Andrew into the room and then made sure our gear was stowed and the Bogliq was secured for the night. I had a long, hot shower then hit the sack. My roommate was already fast asleep. Man, what a long day! Hopefully tomorrow would turn out to be as successful…

Team Redneck day 3, 6-8pm

Jake has been driving since the last diner, Otis is checking his phone.

Otis, “So Who is Suzie?”

Jake looks stunned, “What?”

Otis, “Who is Suzie?”

Jake looking rather confused, “A girl I know”

Otis, “I kind of figured that part out, how did you meet”

Jake, “Originally at school, how do you know about her”

Otis, “Your mom sent me a text”

Jake, “How did she find out”

Otis, “Beats me, she has her ways, I couldn’t keep anything a secret from her ever, so originally at school, sounds like a story”

Jake still embarrassed, “So you know that evening I got in trouble”

Otis, “You mean the one where the Sheriff invited himself to dinner?”

Jake rolls his eyes and scoffs, “Yes that one”, then continues “She was on her way home with a friend, this friend decided to stop at another house briefly, her friend started drinking, things got out of hand, and she called me in a panic, so I rushed over there. That’s when deputy Gonzalez clocked me doing 160 mph. So long story short I got her home before she was too too late, without her family finding out what happened, and got grounded from my license for now a total of 3 months, and we have been texting ever since.”

Otis, “You were lucky, they knew it was you but couldn’t prove it. So why not go see her, take her to the movies or something”

Jake, “Remember, I said I got her home before she was too too late? She still got grounded, and you can’t tell her parents anything, they have no idea she was even in my car, if they find out she was with me when I was driving that fast they would never let me see her”

Otis changing the subject to give Jake a break, “We are about an hour from Itstaka, there is a gas station and diner just before it, we can stop there for a break”

Team Thunder Taxi, Part 15

Duluth, Minnesota

The Thunder Taxi pulled into the parking lot of the Holiday Inn as rain fell during the night. Jack was relieved to make a rest stop right now, as were most of the other teams; he was not alone in suffering from severe fatigue.

“That was tough”, he sighed. “But at least we made it through without any trouble.”

Soon, he began unpacking, and asked his teammates to help. It was not long before they all fell asleep, dreaming of the next time they would be back on the road. But they were well behind the leaders, although at least they had made it this far without any problems, outlasting some of their rivals. One question weighed heavily on Jack’s mind as he fell asleep: How much farther could the Thunder Taxi go? That would have to be answered on the next day.

The two brothers were just exiting the petrol station. With no sight of the Truckling or the Bogliq, Alejandro checks their phone again.

Alejandro: “We’ve overtaken Hartcourt-Entwhistle and are now running 2nd!”

Ana: “Oooooh boy. Let’s get going then.”

Alejandro: “Here’s the plan. We drive until 9, find somewhere to rest overnight, and get up at 5am to get on the road at 6am. Got it?”

Ana: “Aight, let’s keep going for a final stretch then…hopefuly we’ll keep our place overnight.”

Alejandro: “Hopefully.”

Ana shifted into 4th gear, sending Gramps GT forward a tad faster. To the sound of Pyramid by R3set, the two brothers were ready to head for a place to rest in overnight, the first drops of rain settling on the road and dancing around the crevices in the tarmac.

V6 Vandals - D3 4-6p - “13”

Close to 8 PM

The engine shuddered to a stop in the parking lot of the Trapper Landing Lodge, and Luke informed the others that they’d arrived at the hotel for the night.

“About time. I’ll go ahead and get the four of us a room.” Amy said. Jake and Cody exchanged a glance, then asked, “Isn’t Luke usually in charge of lodging?”

“He usually is, but I get the feeling that he’s got a mission in mind. Look over there, other end of the parking lot.” Amy said. There was the Communitasia, which already had been defaced once before by the Outriders. Luke got out of the Truckling, then walked toward the offending car. Even from the Truckling, they could hear a faint click, followed by the shrieking screech of metal against metal. Luke walked back over to them, dusting a bit of paint off of his finger tips, then said, “Left the previous bit of artwork someone gave them, but I just added four pin-stripes from the front of the car to the rear of the car.”

“Jeez. All that noise, I thought you were cutting metal.” Amy said.

“Some of those stripes might be deeper than others. Still far more restrained than I wanted to do.” Luke said. “I wanted to smash the mirrors and pull all four valve stems out of the tires. Or break a window and fill the engine up with bleach. Either would have been appropriate. Instead, I restrained myself and settled for making it look like an angry velociraptor decided to attack their car. It’s still drivable, but I can’t speak for what the other teams might do to it.”

They walked into their rooms, with Amy insisting that Luke kept the damn window closed this time.

8-10p

The Vandals were, for the most part, deeply asleep. Luke is keeping watch over the parking lot. At this point, he’s admiring the snow, and the fact that he knows how to drive in it.

Luke’s Social Media Update:

“Not much happened today. Crossed the border, had a mandatory detour where we took the long way but still made decent time, passed a couple teams, got passed by a couple teams. Looks like we’ve got a late update on someone dropping out, and I hope they’re okay. Team Mushroom Cloud, if you read this, it was good competing with you. You will be missed. As for us, we’re fighting a dying catalytic converter, but at least the O2 sensor fixed two problems at once. It’s not an idle-air-control motor, and with the sensor fixed, it’s stopped trying to die at idle. Catalyst isn’t exactly surprising, we’re blowing blue smoke, and that’s never a good thing for the converters. But for now, we’re still in it.”

Marc: So, how are your classes coming along?

Zach: They’ve been going well. It’s a lot different when I have a reason to give a shit.

Marc: That always makes a difference. I couldn’t find anything to hold my interest. I tried getting into law, but I just couldn’t fathom putting up with all the bullshit.

Zach: What made you decide to be a cop?

Marc: I think it was when we were sitting in on a trial for class. I almost threw up listening to all the drivel that the defense attorney was spitting out.

Zach: What was he saying?

Marc: I don’t quite remember, I know the guy was on trial for getting high and pushing his mother down the stairs.

Zach: My God!

Marc: I knew I couldn’t defend someone like that. And if I was the prosecuting attorney, I’d probably have punched that shyster in the face. So I put myself in another part of the process, where I’m the one hauling these bastards to jail.

Luigi: Or breaking your cars.

Marc: If you fixed them properly, they wouldn’t have broken down.

Blake: Well, to be fair, we were using some old pieces of shit for a while.

Marc: Which I babied the hell out of most of the time.

Luigi: That explains the dented oil pan on 114 then?

Marc: That was Harris, and you know it!

Blake: Harris is still there? Man, I thought he was going to move to Florida.

Marc: You know as well as I do he’s been saying that bullshit for the past twenty years. Seriously, shit or get off the pot.

Blake: Man, I’m glad I retired when I did.

Zach: Yeah, which means you get to stay home and bother me all day.

(Whack!)

Zach: Ow! I’m driving dammit!

Blake: Which is why you only got 50% power. That and I’m tired.

Zach: Well, we should be coming up on Itasca State Park.

Luigi: They’ve got a lodge there.

(Our heroes arrive at Itasca State Park)

Clerk: How many?

Blake: Four.

Clerk: Two to a room okay?

Blake: That will be fine.

Zach: Does your dog bite?

Clerk: No, he’s real friendly.

Zach: Aw, hey little guy!

(CHOMP!)

Zach: Ow! I thought you said he didn’t bite!

Clerk: I did, that’s not my dog.

Zach: (Grumble)

Marc: Walk it off, we’ve got a big day ahead of us tomorrow. Bitch, remember you’re on deck.

Luigi: Fuck you!

(Our heroes get what they need out of the car, lock it, and then go inside to get some sleep.)

Team Mushroom Cloud

Saturday 6-8:15 PM

The decision was made to go just a little further before finding another place to stop. Maybe not the wisest move ever, but that’s what happens when Bill’s involved. Cruising along, a few harsh jerks (and I don’t mean the boys), Wookiee pushed the clutch, and the dash lights went out. He steered the car over to the side of the road and switched off the ignition.
Toni: Well, it’s dead.
Bill: Are you sure? How dead is dead? Maybe we can turn it over to see!
Wookiee turned the key and was rewarded by the sound of one thousand hammers.
Wookiee: No, dude. It’s toast. That was rough.
Bill: No! Not again!
Toni: Why cry, guy? You bought this… thing… while drunk. There’s only so much I can fix with a roll of racing tape. I’m not MacGyver.
Wookiee: Sad face emoji. Hashtag brokencaryo!
Toni: We’ll call for help, the get it towed back in the morning. I’ll have a look, see how bad it REALLY is.

With that, Team Mushroom Cloud had covered their last km in the Ticking Time Bomb. The ride they got back to Floodwood could have been a great competitor in this event… an old pickup that sounded like a tractor with dump-pipes, maybe it was just some local with a light on his roof.

8-10PM
9:00 or so
Bill had pulled out his phablet, and started checking out the OLH page. What he read brought a tear to his eye…I mean, his hay-fever was acting up.

OOC:
Here Endeth the story, but let’s see what the future holds.
