Welcome to Splendid Auto Monthly’s coverage of the 2018 New York International Auto Show. It was a properly big event last year, and here’s hoping that this year will follow suit. I’m flying over next week, and booking in a few extra days to go and soak up the city - I do love New York, you see - and also looking forward to meeting the MotorNation team at last. The hype around the up and coming auto magazine continues to grow, and I’m keen to see how our opinions compare on this year’s show.

But first, duty calls; it’s time for a sift through the emails…

Shromet’s got the newest version of their Appalachian coming to this year’s show. I do loathe crossovers, but a piss load of people buy them, meaning you can’t really ignore them. You also can’t ignore that pandering (I think?) to the Trump train supporters. Never been one for combining politics and cars, aside from dictator’s limousines, but this could at least score a few points with his supporters. The new Appalachian does at least look decent and not like some standard company design style stretched over a body it’s clearly too big for. Mind you, those mirrors; they don’t seem to be on the right way round.

Am I hot and bothered yet Evgenis? I dunno, it’s hard to tell what we’re supposed to be getting hot and bothered over. Whatever this car is, it’s blue, which hence means there’s a 99% chance of it being a performance car.

Baltazar are aiming for the stars for the name of their new car. Just a moment please, I’m going to go and find my astro-physics textbook…
…no luck, I can’t work it out. What we can work out however is that the rumours are pointing to this being a new mid-size sedan from the company. If it’s as good as their very competent Quasar, then my personal favourite mid-size, the Adenine Valence, will certainly have some serious competition on its hands, as will the rest of the market.

Maine seem to be raising the bet against Shromet with “A crossover you can’t hate”. That’s a bold claim; you’d be amazed at how much I can hate such vehicles. Still, at least this one is taking the ‘estate on stilts’ approach, which gives it far more credentials in the looks department than some of the other blobby looking monstrosities that little this market.

Znopresk/BMMA teased a small picture what appears the be the ‘Zanzibar’. Rumours suggest it’s likely to be a new Iularo model, but details otherwise are scarce. This was followed by a shot of a new crossover/SUV, which might be related. Details are so scarce at the moment that it’s hard to even report on rumours on whatever they’re doing. More to follow.

What is it? It’s the Deltex Alacrity. The name makes as much sense as the styling; it’s highly unconventionally, but those aggressive vents and alien-like headlights show purpose and determination. At least, that was the teaser for this thing; a special pre-show release event revealed it to be an 830hp, all-carbon fibre, V12 supercoupe. It’s surprisingly graceful, respite being so performance-focused in its styling, and our guesses so far are that it’s going to be very, very fast. Out of the lesser-known company releases for this year, this one really has taken my fancy.

Enactor announced the reveal of the Series 4 Estate Roamer. Little else is known about it yet other than it’s very big, very blue, and very smokey.
