Uhh.. yeah, these wont pass their inspection (Instabins)

@jakeri9 - Reven Silverbell

Andreas sits in his apartment, looking for information on a car a colleague had recommended, the Reven Silverbell. His colleague had test driven one while on a trip in America and had been impressed.

However when looking through some Swedish magazines, he quickly finds that the manufacturer had not submitted the papers to be able to sell the car in Sweden correctly and therefore sales would be delayed until 2007.

Disappointed about this, Andreas has to cross the Reven off his list.

Reason for bin:

Car submitted was not made in the current stable version of Automation and could therefore not be accessed:

Car used the wrong naming convention:

OOC summary

Even though I think the car looks more in place during the late 90s, I have to say that I definitely like how it looks and would’ve it not been for the bin you would’ve scored quite well on the styling. If it had just been for the naming convention being incorrect, I would’ve let it slide and not binned you, especially since it’s clearly a typo with the submitted car using “AWDG” instead of “AWFG”.

However since the car was also made in what im guessing is the open beta I can’t let you compete. Still, a strong showing design wise for being the first time you’ve competed in a challenge, better luck next time!

@azstudios - Gigliotti Atom

Lisa is sitting in her school library sifting through various city car magazines when something catches her eye. The Gigliotti Atom. She looks questionably at the car.

Why is this in a city car magazine? She thinks to herself

Is this car even road legal? Why is a big sedan in this magazine?

Utterly stumped as to why someone would put this car in a magazine about city cars, she decides to keep looking through the magazine for something more fitting, trying to forget about the Atom.

Reason for bin:

Engine variant set to 2020:

Uses Ethanol blend E10:

Missing Wipers, Missing Front indicators:

Wrong Naming convention:

OOC summary

Oh boy, where do I even start here. First of, this car breaks multiple rules. I would STRONGLY urge you to always check your car multiple times before submitting. But with regards how many you broke, I’m genuinely questioning if you actually even read the rules. Something that makes me wonder that even more is that you chose a full size sedan body. I highly doubt you’ve looked at the inspiration and if you did, I would like you to show me the BMW 3-series in there. I HIGHLY urge you to read the main challenge post FULLY before submitting.

Now the styling. The design is very flat and uninspiring. The car consists of 13 fixtures on the exterior which just isn’t enough to make the car look good. For example most of the top scores in the design category consist of 100+ fixtures, that’s not saying you need that many to make a car look good, in fact there is an entry later on which is quite below that in fixture count but is still in the top 5 design wise. But 13 is just not enough. The car is also missing some critical components like front indicators and wipers, a handle to open the boot and a radio antenna. The front lights are also way too modern for 2006. I recommend you sit down and replicate a real life design to understand car design and how to achieve it in Automation, because.. this aint it chief.

Now.. the engineering. It’s by far and away the weirdest and most bizarre engineering of all entries. Lets start with the chassis. You’ve decided to go for Dual wishbone in the front and Multilink in the rear. Not only is this far outside the realm of realism, they are both very costly and complex systems which end up hurting your stats in the long run. The engine is a full cast iron, pushrod, 3L V6.. producing ~73 horsepower. Why? What is even the thought process here? You’ve chosen an engine setup from the 1940s! You’ve also set the compression to 5.0:1.. once again WHY?! Also the exhaust is a mind boggling 4.2 inches. The engine doesn’t even produce 100hp and you think that a 4+ inch exhaust is what this thing needs. It is very obvious from the tuning that you wanted the engine to be not very powerful, so why in the world did you make it a 3L V6? Not only does this give you a massive realism penalty, it hurts your service cost, price and fuel economy which is an eye watering 11.9L/100km (19.8mpg). For reference, the average is about 6L/100km (39mpg) which is almost half! Despite you choosing chunky 245 tires in the front and even bigger 265 in the rear this car gets wheelspin despite only having 73 horsepower. You also decided to have -2 quality on the tires. I don’t understand why you would have massive staggered tires with negative quality, like what’s even the point of this? It only hurts your SVC. On the topic of negative quality, this car only has negative quality across the board and is still only 400 dollars under budget. If I were you that would give me massive red flags that something is wrong, never should you have to utilize only negative qualitiy. Also you haven’t touched the techpool which hurts you overall as well.

Next up, brakes. Why on god’s green earth does this car have vented discs with 6 piston calipers on both the front AND rear? In what world is that necessary? For entertainment you get a basic cassette player, in 2006, really? The icing on the cake for all this is that it has launch control. All this combined makes for below average scores and an absolutely massive realism penalty at -38%, for reference, the average is around +0%. So even if this car didn’t get binned for rule breaks, it wouldn’t have scored well. The absolute best advice I can give is to please please please do some research on car engineering and look at what real manufactures do. I’m not trying to demotivate you, we all have to start somewhere, but yeah you’ve totally missed the mark on this one.

Next time, take some time to read the challenge post and actually think about what it says and tries to portray, and do some research into cars in general.

@David_Herrera - Harris Sunday

Sitting at his PC, Jakob is trying to find different websites containing reviews for different cars. Suddenly a website catches his attention.

Wow, Jakob thinks to himself

“The designs on here are really striking, what are these cars? I’ve not seen any of them before” Jakob mumbles to himself.

As he keeps reading a car called the “Harris Sunday” catches his attention. Supposedly it’s a small-ish hatchback offering good comfort.

As he keeps reading though, he reads something that worries him.

“Concept car?” he exclaims

As his eyes wander to the “about” page on the website he notices something.

Oh.. this is a site for concept cars only. Oh well

Jakob closes down the site and keeps looking.

Reason for bin:

Usage of a legacy body:

OOC summary

The looks don’t really do it for me here. It kinda looks like a concept car from the front, cant really put my finger on why, but that was the first thing I thought when I saw it and that thought has stuck with me. I think it’s also due to the front looking kinda stretched, the headlights especially are morphed weirdly. The rear looks also leaves much to be desired with it being quite bland. The rear lights also don’t fit the car at all and make it look quite strange. The overall lack of molding also doesn’t do this car much favors.

Engineering wise it’s quite far behind all the other entries. Stats wise being behind the average on all stats except comfort which is a bit above average. But it has the absolute lowest score on drivability, reliability and price. Drivability is the absolute standout which is at an abysmal 62, being 15 points behind the average of 77 and nearly 30 points behind the top score. With the below average stats and being at the maximum price cap this was never going to place well. Looking beyond the stats, the engineering choices don’t help this car’s case. First of all, the car has a space frame and fibre glass construction more akin to a shed built trackday car instead of a city car. The engine makes peak power at readline which hurts your overall engine performance and also means that the gearbox tuning is quite bad with the gaps between gears being massive and the overdrive is minimal. This hurts your drivability and fuel economy badly.

Next time, remember to double check your car is legal and look at some real life examples for both your styling and engineering.

@PistonHead - Cirelli Maime

As Lisa keeps flipping through her magazines she comes across the “Cirelli Maime”. As she starts to read she quickly discovers that the manufacturer had made multiple mistakes when trying to register the car in Sweden and sales would therefore be delayed. Lisa’s search keeps going.

Reason for bin:

Car used the wrong naming convention:

OOC summary

Nothing really offensive about the design but it lacks much detail. The thought is definitely there and it could’ve been ok but the execution falls kinda flat on its face. The lack of molding makes it very flat and uninteresting. I also don’t like how tight the front end is, it looks very squashed together. On the rear the lettering seems quite big and out of proportion.

On the stats you fall below average on most. The standout is your SVC which is at 1009, which for a cheap hatchback is quite poor. The 2 big culprits for this are your tires and that you’re running a turbo. On the tire front you decided to run staggered tires, which shouldn’t be needed and your running and extreme amount of camber which puts you at a 1.6x tire service multiplier. Now the turbo. You’re 1 of only 2 cars that’s running it. I like that someone actually went this route but sadly you’re getting screwed by Automations SVC calcs, which look harshly on turbos. Your reliability is also far behind the pack being nearly the worst of all cars. My biggest gripe however on the engineering front is that you chose to run ITBs. Now, you’re not alone on this with 6 cars that were submitted with this. It honestly leaves me scratching my head. The only conclusion I can draw is that it stems from a lack of knowledge on the menus. However it should be clear why this is a bad and highly unrealistic choice here. You’ve also decided to run no mufflers which gives you a realism penalty. Apart from that the engineering is ok with some small inconsistencies here and there.

@Krejcar - Turnier C30

Having finally found a useful website, Jakob is now finding cars which are suited to the siblings goals. He then comes across a car called the “Turnier C30”. As his eyes wander across the page, something jumps out.

“Due to incorrect engine specs being submitted to the Swedish government, it’s unsure when this car will go on sale”.

Because the car isn’t available in Sweden, Jakob keeps looking for a car.

Reason for bin:

Car used the wrong naming convention:

OOC summary

The “C30” suffers from similar problems as the “Maime”. A lack of molding making the design flat and the front end being quite pressed together. The overall concept is good, it’s just the execution that lets it down.

Stats wise it’s ok with most stats being around average. However the drivability is quite behind. You’ve placed the redline a bit too low which hinders the engine a bit, but thanks to you choosing a CVT it doesn’t affect the drivability too much. Once again we got a car with ITBs, which isn’t realistic for one bit. The techpool usage leaves a lot on the table. With some better optimization here you could’ve placed quite a bit better. The suspension tuning also leaves a fair bit of drivability on the table.

@CrazyCat808 - Citrus 35

As Lisa is about to wrap up her magazine reading session, something she recognizes catches her eye.

Oh! Lisa thinks to herself.

I know this car! One of the french exchange students couldn’t stop talking about this thing, the “Citrus 35”

Fascinated by the looks, Lisa has to keep reading about it.

Oh.. what? WES 6? It only meets WES 6 standard for emissions. That sucks!

Despite Lisa really not wanting to eliminate this car, she sadly has to cross it out from her list.

Reason for bin:

Only reaches WES 6 emissions:

OOC summary

It really, really, really hurts my soul having to bin this car. It’s definitely my favorite of all the designs competing. As such, I don’t really have any comments on the design other than that it’s really good.

Stats wise it’s mostly below average. But its cheap price helps boost its score. Your techpool usage hurts you the most, mainly because you haven’t touched it. Beyond that your engineering isn’t offensively bad. Some fine tuning would help but beyond that its not so bad.

@ShinyBat - Pipi Upton

While Andreas is looking for information on another car. Something purple suddenly jumps out at him. The “Pipi Upton”.

As he reads, a quote sticks out. “Due to a fuel quality scandal, the Upton is not cleared for sale in the nordic countries”

Because it’s not available in Sweden, Andreas decides to keep looking.

Reason for bin:

Uses premium 95 fuel:

OOC summary

The main elephant in the room here is the design, which, quite frankly, is horrendous. The lack of anything other than a license plate on the bumper looks extremely weird. The decision to make it non-painted plastic as well is not a good one. The “trim” on the doors also sticks out extremely much making it look weird from most angles that aren’t straight on from the side. On the rear the lettering is way too big and out of proportion. Also, why is the “sunroof” so small?

The stats aren’t much better with basically all being way below average. The engine tuning is horrendous, mainly because of the turbo. You’ve got a boost threshold of 4000rpm with a redline at 5600rpm, so 1600 revs of boost. But you’ve tuned it so badly that you never get any sizable power from the turbo.

How would you have faired if you werent binned?

@jakeri9 - 28th (No score)
@azstudios - 27th (87,1 points)
@David_Herrera - 26th (138,7 points)
@ShinyBat - 25th (151,3 points)
