ABS-QF1 | 1968 Roadsters of Romance [ENTRIES CLOSED]

Welcome to the first ABS-Quickfire

The new Bi-Weekly, every other Tuesday, for your inconvenience

View Brief Here

Running away with me

This time we will be having you make MY1968 roadsters for Romantic Warriors among us. As this is a 2- week ordeal, we will give you a largely blank canvas on which to draw your example piece of a charming little 2 (or 4) seat roadster. There are however, some requirements your piece of artwork must meet, which you can view below.

Use the OpenBeta Al Rilma Branch for this challenge

See Body Rules

Some Girls want to see the Tops come down

Rules here are pretty simple, and there aren’t very many of them either:

  • Wheelbase of the body must be at least 2.0 meters

  • Body must have a convertible or removable roof, coupes with removable hardtops and targas count too

  • Trim year must be set to 1968

  • Must seat 2 or more people

Yeah, it really is that simple. Not a Beast of a Burden is it?

See Engine Rules

Ride like the wind at double speed

We are mainly looking to see European and Asian coupes, but we have made some displacement accommodations for those looking to build something on the larger, more GT- esque end. Rules are as follows:

  • Set year to 1968
  • Displacement max: DOHC = 1.7l, OHC = 2.5, OHV = 3.5L
  • Reliability at least 56
  • Max engine ET of 76
  • Runs Leaded Regular
  • Max Engine SVC $420
  • No race parts
  • Max 2 valves per pot

You Can't Always Get What You Want, we have to impose some rules here to keep the scope small enough, we aren't making race cars here

Open Trim Rules

It’s just you and no one else

Now for the part that makes or breaks this car of yours, the trim. The cars we are looking for offer a very driveable and fun experience, with decently good comfort, and a handful of sportiness. Fun and real sexy, here are the rules:

  • Must be driveable, at least 45 points
  • Comfort should be decent, so at least 14 points, but preferably more
  • 10 sportiness, shoot higher if you can

  • At least 25 safety, it’s a deathtrap either way
  • You gotta at least get out the driveway, minimum 51 reliability, more won’t hurt
  • ET total maximum of 70
  • Highest allowed fuel consumption of 13L / 100km
  • Run Medium Cross Ply tires
  • Maximum of 40kg of down force per axle at 170 kph

See Budgets

A man of wealth, and taste

Now for the real buzzkill, your budgets. You get…

  • Maximum comb. techpool of 2.5 million, do not go below +2 in any category

  • Soft approx. cost cap of 14k, with -5% eng. score for every $100 over, hard cap at 15k

  • Soft Trim SVC cap of 900, with -1% eng. score for every $1 over, hard cap of 925

And that should be all, happy building people!

See instructions

Your entry should consist of 2 things, your .car file and a variety of flattering images of the car. Your car will be judged both by the community in a poll, and by us, with our score not having any impact on placement.

Submit either to:

A: This thread
or B: Into the appropriate channel of our Discord server, the link to which you will find in the comments.

The engineering of the car is scored based on a more is better basis, we just compare your stats against everyone else, highest total wins

Deadline for this challenge: 2025-06-02T21:00:00Z

A Beginning

We are a fresh new team of competition hosts. We don't know if there is a demand for more competition hosts. But we've decided to start making our own competitions anyways, because we've either weren't satisfied with how the others are simply have nothing better to do. Now we still believe we're worth your time because, while yes we are inexperienced, we are willing to listen to feedback and continuously learn to make the best competitions to our ability.

We Also Got a Discord Server

You can join our discord server to connect and chat with other fellow competitors about your cars and brag how good you are but still finish only like 6th :face_with_tongue:

THE RESULTS ARE IN

Engineering winner is Chief with the Python, scoring 274

Style winner was, no surprise, Brinkwood, with the Kippers, scoring an average of 8.14 points, a whole 2 points above the next best car

As for the total, we calculate points the same way F1 does, but we just add the total from style and engineering

So congratulations to @chief for winning Roadsters of Romance! The amount of entries was less than we hoped, but we learnt a lot from this one.

Shame QF2 had a whole 2 entries, that one didn’t happen

Looks like a good premise, is the challenge on stable or Al Rima?

Shit, I shoulda specified that, Al Rilma.

Wait… BI-WEEKLY AL RILMA CHALLENGES!?

Yeah, submissions close and open Bi-Weekly, we take a few days to do the judging though.

I do think the max price is a little low. A 1968 MGB, like shown, had an MSRP of about 2670 USD (According to google). In modern money that’s equal to 24,536 USD in 2025, or 19,857 for 2020, when the game technically ends (According to in2013dollars.com).

I think it would be fair to increase the maximum to 20,000$ or even a little more, instead of the comparatively low limit of 14,000$

Automation pricing is before manufacturer and dealer markups. We tested the ruleset and 14k is just tight enough to have it be interesting, at least in our opinion. Try it out, see if you can work with it. We likely won’t edit this ruleset anymore, but will keep it in mind for the next one.

The issue we run into with approx. cost is how people use that money, if people used lots of + quality to make the cost, no problem. But fact is, if we give money people will go overboard and outside the scope of what we want to see. We would have to balance the round around reliability and other stats, which I have been told is “way too hard” to achieve despite cracking 65 with this ruleset.

Alright. Makes sense. I haven’t actually tried to make anything yet, and that was my initial reaction.

I do think the players skill does effect how difficult certain requirements are to reach, so what may be doable for you, may be seemingly impossible for a newer player. I personally used to really struggle with fuel economy, but now I can usually get reasonable efficiency AND power pretty easily.

I’ll give it a whirl and see how it feels.

Also quick side question- In the future, do you plan to host challenges in open-apha’s, like this time? Or stay on the stable branch like 95% of challenges do?

We plan to stick to the Alphas, but we will put the challenges on hold if the branch is too unstable to really compete on.

If I can just muster up the bravery to try the Al-Rilma open alpha, I could find this one worth trying out… But if there are ET limits, then why aren’t there any PU limits to go along with them?

Why bother limiting both, they scale at roughly the same rate. We will look thru the cars after the get entered in and see if there are potential issues we need to iron out

Hey fellas! I am here to just do a small checkup on you, how is the ruleset and theme? We want your feedback, the first competitions are always a little rough. Did you like the soft cap idea with the budgets?

I can’t say I have any problems with the theme or the ruleset, though I am new so I don’t know how valuable my input is. I have joined the open beta now though, as both of these challenges looked more interesting than the other challenges on the stable branch, apart from QFC which I have already entered

Oh it is valuable, what did you like most about it? That is just as good to know as what you disliked about it. We are still in the awkward beginning phases of this stuff so we need all the input we can get

I just like that this is a challenge that is dedicated to the cars I basically surround myself with IRL, one of my dream cars is an MGB, I have friends who own Morgan’s, old Caterham’s, Triumphs. This is just like the challenge was made for me.

My only problem really is the flattering images part. On stable, my photo mode wouldn’t work so I could not take any good images, which might be fixed now on the beta, but if not, I will have to rely on Beam and well…the export process tends to lose a little of the beauty.

Oh yeah before I forget, what is the status on interiors? I usually throw a quick bash of random parts to make my car look like it has an interior from the exterior, but given these are the best kind of vehicle ever made (Convertibles), I can imagine Interiors are a higher priority

Interiors are optional, we prefer you throw one together, and it will certainly affect the public vote results, but we won’t take away points in judging for it or anything.

It is good to hear that the theme was a hit, we actually came up with the name first, it just sounded right. I think we should work on our rulesets a little more, and also on the presentation, but that is a problem for the next challenge

personally I say do not change the presentation, this already looks brilliant

I will admit Roadsters of Romance seems more like a name for convertible Supercars, but hey, if they can capture my heart they can capture anyones

I think it was catchy, no? The presentation on our ABS-01P1 is a bit better dare I say, other than for the header image. This was just quickly thrown together.

We think we will be sticking to the music-theme in our actual write-ups. I mean, this whole challenge presentation is a Rolling Stones reference, it includes lyrics from some of my favorite songs, with some Modern Talking thrown in the mix.
