BETA-X02 âKAITOâ
About the Vehicle
The Beta-X02. An innovative (and obviously not road legal) look into the future of transportation!
- Four thrusters propel the craft forwards and upwards, harnessing the power of one mini-reactor in each one (plus one for the main body).
- Magnetic linkage between the main body and the thrusters eliminate the need for suspension, while allowing for more flexible movements.
- Active rear wing and air brakes on each thruster
- Single-seating. No, we donât fully trust AIs, not especially with this thing.
- And most importantly, a decent entertainment system!
About the Course
Set in the not-so-far future, where anti-gravity vehicles are luxuries and infrastructures of it are still being built. Every year, the Beta-X02 runs the city, showing off its prowess in speed and maneuver.
- Show off your skills in this town, featuring day/night cycles and varying roads and obstacles: city roads with traffic, unfinished hover car roads with jumps, even the city skies and through buildings!
- Race through checkpoints along the course! Donât miss a single one!
- Get good and glide to hit the air checkpoints! Use those thrusters wisely!
- Finish within time limit or risk the cops getting to you!

REVIEWS
This entry was the most car-like out of our three contestants, even if it didnât have any wheels. Very nicely detailed all throughout, the cat ears are a great touch too. The overall body style is reminiscent of a 70s/80s sports car which is pretty fun. Those tail lights are very neat to look at.
Looking at the vehicle closer, the namesake is clearer when you examine its color scheme and surface detailing, with the black and gold colors being taken from Megurine Lukaâs dress, as well as her brooch being represented on the hood of the machine. Other salmon-like elements include the blue highlights all throughout matching the VOCALOID aesthetic.
Aside from looking like her dress, there isnât much in the way that really makes you think âLuka Luka Night Feverâ, the pink elements seem to be restrained to the cat ear elements on the roof. Then again, with how itâs designed I canât really fathom where else to put other pink elements on the car without harming the overall sleek aesthetic of it. Still, at first glance it would not have reminded me of the VOCALOID it is named after.
Even without a description, I can definitely appreciate this vehicle and where it could fit in the game.
Yuriscore: 7/10
The course appears to be a futuristic light bridge akin to something youâd see from WipEout. It also features a custom UI to match the stage that is nicely detailed. Looking closer at these UI elements, some form of weaponization and hostile elements may be present on the course, which would be an interesting touch.
There doesnât seem to be a real-world connection to the course, the minimap appears to center on somewhere in Northern Africa but at the same time, the âGPRSâ (general packet radio service? this thing runs on 2G?) implies the location is in the USA.
The overall course fits the theme and idea of the game, but in a generic way. Itâs futuristic and cool looking, but seems to lack any connection with the overall VOCALOID theme.
Xepyscore: 5/10
what a mouthful
A very much non-road legal entry. The overall design is much more like a spaceship from <insert space opera here>. It has an insane amount of surface detailing and greebling that I really just canât put in words how much work had gone into it.
The more you look at it, the more details you will find. Words canât describe the flashbang I got when I moved the camera to the craftâs underbelly and stared in awe at all of the detail work done to the bottom of the craft.
Thereâs even a fucking cockpit in this thing. If you told me this was from <insert sci-fi game here>, I would very much believe you.
Unfortunately, thatâs also a flaw of it. It focuses too hard on looking like this hardcore sci-fi spacefighter that it canât seem to tie in with the rest of the game aesthetics-wise. Thereâs not a smidge of VOCALOID connection that I can tell.
Yuriscore: 7/10
Like the Zephorus, itâs another light bridge. But itâs got sound wave elements akin to the WipEout Zone mode.
Lacking any sort of description, it does fit the game but again, in a generic âooh its sci-fiâ kind of way. Thereâs not a connection to the roundâs overall theme, though this light bridge seems to fit better than the Zephorusâ due to its musical-like theme.
Xepyscore: 5/10
KERMIT THE FROG MY BELOVED
I seem to be missing a mod because the entire car shows up in silver. Does this mean I havenât unlocked it yet?
This oneâs a pretty fun and very arcade-y entry. Itâs definitely the most VOCALOID-like out of all the entries so far, but thatâs not the main reason why I think this should be the winner.
Looking at the design just beyond its connection to the game, the overall shape is reminiscent of a Caterham Sevan or a Cigar-style F1 racer. Surface detailing isnât as nice as the Zephorus or the ARI, but when youâre trying to match to the beat of a Gakuto x Kaito cover of Magnet, that kind of stuff fades away and youâre really mainly focusing on staying on beat with the yaoi.
I think it wouldâve been a bit cooler if you had separated the pods from the main body through additional car files to allow for more dynamic poses, and it does seem a bit flat in some places (mainly those rear thrusters, I feel like they could use some vectoring flaps or something for manueverability).
i love big wings !!!
Yuriscore: 9/10 (almost perfect!!)
The course is a monochrome city with bright contrasting skybox and checkpoints. Very stylistic, with the vehicleâs light trails showing contrasting well with the cityâs muted palette, and the base white paint of the vehicle contrasting well against the sky.
Its a cool vibe just from the pictures, conveying a varied environment and possibility for lots of different track layouts with both roads and open sky to race through. Builders can easily make transitions between the different micro environments with jumps or make the course more difficult with obstacles such as traffic or just the buildings itself.
The fact thereâs cops is kind of funny - they donât want you to race through brightly with the music But maybe also makes sense the monochrome city would send cops on the bright light trail hovercar.
Xepyscore: 10/10 - would have scored the highest based on the environments the others submitted but this is actually really cool regardless.
RANKINGS
FIRST PLACE
SECOND PLACE
THIRD PLACE
Someone once told me that âEven if you scored low at an art competition, it doesnât mean your artwork is bad, it just didnât fit the juryâs criteria.â I forgot who told me that (Iâm so sorry), but this applies especially to this entry.
Itâs an amazing work of art that wouldâve fit another challenge so much better (or even be adapted to fit this one somewhat easily) but in comparison to the other entries, it just didnât match what we were looking for.
Thank you for participating!
Oh wow, didnât expect the first place! Thank you Yuri and Xepy for hosting! Couple of things though:
Itâs actually this mod, with the toon shader: Steam Workshop::Md's Custom Paints 4.27 V2
(Aside from my skills and laziness ofc) Iâd owe this, along with the cel-shaded aesthetic and the mostly flat surfaces on the vehicle to games like Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Hover, or Jet Set Radio. The kind of game where aesthetics come before graphical details, and music itself is half the experience, but this time with yaoi vocaloid.
also that finish photo is giving me
pretty cool actually
as for the next round er um gimme a week or so, havenât cooked anything yet bit i might have some ideas
edit: Got it!
