[ARM] Automation RestoMod Chapter 35: Octane & Overdrive (DEADLINE EXTENSION!)

AUTOMATION RESTOMOD CHAPTER 35: OCTANE & OVERDRIVE

FIRST ARM
LATEST ARM
WHAT IS ARM?

BACKSTORY
Well, since the "Y2K era workhorse" alternative seemed to be almost as popular as the winner when it came to the voting for ARM33, here comes the Y2K era workhorse...

Anyway, it probably doesn’t get more humble than the late 90s and early 00s Skoda Felicia Pickup. A vehicle made to be cheap, practical and…well, honestly speaking, nothing else. On the other hand a blank canvas to paint on, but why are we calling out all the tuning companies now?

Well, “Octane & Overdrive” is a new TV show broadcasted by FFF (Film, Funk & Fernsehen) in Germany (its Hetvesian branch known for, among other things, Notruf 110, lol) . It is a show about cars, aimed at a youthful audience. So, reports from the tuning scene and tests of new “cool” cars are mixed with practical tips on how to do service and repairs, good tips about buying your first car and how to be a safe driver, and so on. Excitement mixed with practicality and common sense, so to speak.

One of the features of this first season is that we will follow the transformation by a skilled tuning company of a really boring vehicle, a 2000 Skoda Felicia Pickup in its 1.3 litre base version, into something that is actually exciting. It will also be the prize you will be able to win in a challenge at the end of the season, so FFF is of course looking for something as cool as possible. But that skilled tuning company, which one is it? Well, we will have to make that decision now. It may be yours?

This will be a more “Outlaw” style ARM in the spirit of 31 and 32. There aren’t many rules to follow about how FFF wants the vehicle to be. The best idea will win, more or less. There also aren’t any hard limits on the budget, to leave a bit more room for imagination, but that does not mean that it is necessarily a good idea to gold plate the interior and put a 20 litre V16 with +15 quality on everything in the engine bay just because you can…

PRIORITIES

:star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

CREATIVITY
Go as wild as you want with it. I kind of want to see a re-run of ARM 31 with ideas as wide spread as possible. That doesn't necessarily mean that a build that are totally bonkers automatically will have an advantage over a "milder" one, a well working concept that is still standing out from the crowd in a good way is what we are looking for.

:star: :star: :star: :star:

APPEAL
Make something that as many people as possible will have an interest in winning. Creativity is good, but if it is used to make something that is just laughable, it won't take you far. So it may be a good idea to think things over. Will a shed on wheels or a My Little Pony themed car appeal to the general public?
COHESIVENESS
The stats and engineering should match the type of build you are doing, well, at least as good as it can be represented within the limits of the game. If you build an offroad themed build you better bump up the offroad stats, if it's a racing inspired build you should maybe not keep the engine stock, and so on...
PRICE
No hard limit on price to allow for creativity, but having a high priority means that you should still watch your costs...if it is an expensive build it better has to be worth it!

:star: :star: :star:

RELIABILITY (trim and engine), DRIVEABILITY, FUEL ECONOMY, SERVICE COSTS
It will maybe matter a bit what kind of car it is how heavy this will be weighted, but winning a prize should be a reward, not a punishment that will ruin you or try to kill you, no matter what kind of build it is.

:star: :star:

COMFORT, SAFETY
Once again it might matter what kind of build it is how heavy this will be weighted, but since the goal is to make a car that is actually useable and not expensive garden art, don't sacrifice too much of it.

:star:

INTERIOR DESIGN
It will be judged separately from the exterior design, and not weighted as heavy. Now, the interior included only vaguely resembles the original that was a bit hard to recreate, all improvements on it are welcome, but most important here will be cohesiveness. Setting the interior type to "luxury" while putting in racing seats and roll cage, or putting a racing inspired interior in a lowrider is not really good for getting bonus points, but you won't lose any score no matter how "wrong" or "ugly" your interior will be, compared to an untouched original.
PLEASE REMEMBER - OTHER STATS WILL BE WEIGHTED IN, BUT DEPENDING HEAVILY ON THE TYPE OF BUILD YOU DECIDE TO MAKE!

RULES

  • Clone both the imported model and engine family before you start modding. Nowadays this can all be done with one button of the Car Designer tab in Automation - the one circled red in the photo below.

  • Set all dates (model year, trim year, engine family/variant year) to 2020. It is highly recommended to exit the game and reopen it after cloning it and before updating the dates.

  • No race parts (race intake, race tubular exhaust, racing tyres). Semi slicks allowed. V16s allowed.

  • Default +5 TP everywhere, as the car was originally made with.

  • A reasonable use of quality. I don’t want to see, for example, +15 on turbos and then -15 on safety. I am not sure that I want to set any hard limits here, but overly cheesy use of it WILL have its consequences in judging.

  • The general rule of ARM is to not make a car worse. Now, a very marginal drop in one single stat if it really bumps up the others will not instabin the car, so this is a very soft rule indeed, but still, try to avoid it if you can. However, there will be a more stretchable limit than in an usual ARM.

  • Unleaded premium or super fuel. Super will give a slight disadvantage. The exception is faux diesels, which we will come to later.

  • The car should appear “street legal” and useable without too much struggle. Once again, I won’t be too harsh here, but at least it should appear driveable and have the required equipment like wipers, lights, mirrors etc. - even if I expect to see some wildcards that maybe would drive the police crazy IRL.

  • The car should be able to pass WES9.

  • ATS is allowed for more or less anything that can’t be done via engineering.

  • Stable version of Automation.

FAUX DIESEL RULES

Diesel tuning is rather popular within the VAG scene, which Skoda is a part of, so it would feel wrong to not allow for faux diesels this time. I have more or less copied @moroza s ruleset from ARM30, no meaning in reinventing the wheel for something we probably will have to relearn for Al-Rilma anyway.
  • Architecture must be 2-valve. Block and head(s) cast iron. Bore/stroke ratios expected to be somewhat more undersquare (smaller bore, longer stoke) than IRL. Compression ratio expected to be lower than IRL, in the 12-16 range.
  • Bottom end may not use any “light” parts.
  • Cam profile zero. VVT, VVL prohibited.
  • Exhaust must have one muffler set to None. In cause of a turbo diesel, that goes for both mufflers, to give somewhat more realistic noise penalties.
  • Diesel fuel is simulated by Compressed Gas, LNG 150 RON. Timing fully retarded. Fuel system options:

Also, there will be a 10% SVC penalty on common rail engines.

COST PENALTIES

  • Chassis type can be changed for a $6000 cost penalty.
  • Chassis material can be changed for a $2000 cost penalty (included within a chassis type change).
  • Panel material can be changed for a $2000 cost penalty.
  • Changing engine orientation will give a $4000 cost penalty.
  • Changing suspension type will give a $1000 penalty per axle. However, if you change drive type, a rear suspension swap is included in that price (since torsion beam is only allowing for FWD)
  • A complete engine swap will give a $2000 penalty.
  • Only a cylinder head change will give a $500 penalty
  • A swap of body type, or using morphs/3d/patchwork that radically alters the look of the car will give a $2000 penalty.
  • Changing drive type will give a $4000 penalty.
  • Changing type of gearbox to anything else than another manual will give a $500 penalty.

In other words, OHV, DAOHC, 2v OHC and 2v DOHC heads are permitted, but 3v/4v OHC and 4v/5v DOHC are not.

IF you’re building a faux diesel, yes.

Also, seems like I accidentally deleted the budget priority so I will fix that ASAP…

skoda felicia mentioned :speaking_head::speaking_head::speaking_head::speaking_head:

Is this some joke I am supposed to get?

no i just really like the skoda felicia

Proposed update to diesel rules:

NA diesels must have one muffler set to None. Turbodiesels may not have any mufflers.

Common rail simulated by DI-Single, not DI-Per-Cylinder, now +$1500 and still -5% engine reliability. Should also give a SVC penalty; CR injectors are fragile and expensive.

I guess you’re speaking out of experience after fiddling with your own ruleset and maybe from the challenge hosting in itself? Worth taking into consideration then I guess…

Both. The muffler rule, combined with intake type restrictions, makes for more realistic diesel noise penalties.

Yeah I can really see that. Since I haven’t built that many faux diesels since 4.1, I found it the easiest to just adapt your ruleset to this, and I hope you don’t feel bad about being “ripped off”.

I guess I will implement your proposed changes since you know more useful things than me about this, so I don’t recommend anybody to start building a faux diesel just yet. I just felt that it would be a bit boring to put up a VAG vehicle without allowing for some TDI goodness, if you understand what I mean, haha.

Can’t live without 1.9TDI exhaust fumes

I think I will also lighten up the body swap vs. fixture based modding rules a bit? I came to think about that a convertible conversion, for example, would most likely end up looking like this, which would be hard to replicate realistically with a body swap…opinions?

I think it would be OK to reduce the body swap penalty. Since the base car was made the Fiesta body, any body swap, apart from maybe the van, would wind up completely removing the bed from the truck, which would require heavy 3D work to add back on. So realistically if one wanted to make a convertible it would have to be done with fixtures.

Exactly. It was just used as an example, but I can’t see anyone wanting to use any other body swap than the van one TBH…well, I should not say too much as a host, but rebuilding the pickup into a stock Felicia hatchback would lose on stupidity points alone.

OK, changes this far:
Updated the faux diesel ruleset according to @moroza s suggestions.
Rebalanced the injustice between bodyswap and altering the looks with fixtures. Since most bodyswaps won’t be useful in this case, it is now up to your common sense what to choose.

OK, Open for subs since a while ago, forgot to mention yesterday.

ONE WEEK LEFT!
No need to hurry yet, but in case you haven’t started on your entry, it might be a good time to do it now.

Skoda Felicia Fun AF

In order to create the wild Felicia Fun AF, a humble Felicia pickup gets new suspension geometries front and back complete with bigger brakes and the engine gets rotated 90 degrees, now mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The engine itself receives a new cylinder head, with four valves per cylinder, VVT and VVL, as well as a turbocharger and an updated fuel system. The star of the show is the new bodywork, inspired by Group 5 racecars of old, with functional aerodynamics and massively wider fenders. Front and back LED lightbars are installed for a modern look.

DEADLINE EXTENSION!

It was supposed to be 48 hours left now. (Or well, a little over an hour ago TBH)

However, the number of entries this far are very small (Only @the-chowi , and @Maverick74 that yet has to post an ad).

Since I want to at least have a full podium in a challenge, I have decided to give this a chance by extending it by yet another week.

New deadline is still 6 PM CET, but friday the 28th of march.
