Automation RestoMod Chapter 36: Got The Blues

A staple of the late 50s and beyond, the Jefferson Granjero sought to combine the comfort and drivability of a passenger car with the utility and practicality of a pick-up truck.
The task at hand is to tastefully and creatively modify this iconic vehicle, with no limit to the resources that you might need, improving every aspect of the car’s mechanical and visual features.

(Just like the previous round, there won’t be many strict rules or any budget limit, but there will be cost penalties for radical modifications)

Rules
  • This challenge will be run on the stable version of the game (Ellisbury)

  • Clone both the imported model and engine family before you start modding. Nowadays this can all be done with one button of the Car Designer tab in Automation - the one circled red in the photo below.

  • Set all dates (model year, trim year, engine family/variant year) to 2020. It is highly recommended to exit the game and reopen it after cloning it and before updating the dates.

  • Do not modify any of the materials included in the file, either clone them and change their name, use them as they are or use your own.

  • No race parts whatsoever.

  • V16s are allowed.

  • Semi-slicks are allowed.

  • Default techpool (+5 in every category)

  • No negative quality.

  • Unleaded or Ethanol Blend fuels only, no octane restriction.

  • Should be somewhat road-legal (all the necessary lights, wipers, fuel cap, etc.)

  • No body type changes, it must remain a pick-up, both visually and in the in-game classification.

  • ATS can be used without limits.

  • If it’s not immediately obvious by visuals or component choices, you must state whether your build is meant to be road-oriented, offroad-oriented or a balance of the two.

  • The general rule of ARM is to not make a car worse, so every stat should be equal or better. This is not a hard rule, but massive drops in a given stat could play negatively.

Cost penalties
  • Panel material - $2000.

  • Chassis type - $7000.

  • Chassis material - $3000, but is included if you change chassis type.

  • Engine placement - $3000 if changing orientation, $7000 if changing location.

  • Suspension type - $1000 per axle.

  • Full engine swap - $2000 - an engine counts as swapped if block material, cylinder configuration or number of cylinders is changed, or if engine displacement is changed in the engine family tab.

  • Engine internals material change (Crank, Conrods and Pistons) - $250 per part changed, but included in an engine swap.

  • Cylinder head swap - $500 - a cylinder head counts as swapped if its material or configuration is changed (VVT and VVL, if available for said swapped cylinder head, won’t incur an additional penalty).

  • Forced induction - $500, but included in an engine swap or $250 with a cylinder head swap.

  • Drive type - $3000, but is included in an engine location change.

  • Gearbox - $500 per added gear in a manual transmission, but included in an engine location change. $2000 for a transmission type swap - no penalties per gear if so, but not included in an engine location change.

  • Radical visual body changes - $1000, but included in a panel material swap.

Priorities

:star: :star: :star: :star:

  • Creativity - go wild here, radical modifications are welcome.

  • Quality of execution

:star: :star: :star:

  • Consistency - the stats must reflect the visuals and vice-versa.

:star: :star:

  • Cost - while there is no budget limit, less expensive builds will have an advantage. Cost penalties will also be taken into account here.

  • Drivability

  • Other driving stats - Offroad, Sportiness - Off-roading entries will be judged by their offroad score, while roadgoing entries will be judged by their sportiness score. If a build is meant to strike a balance between the two, like a rally car, then both stats will be taken into account.

:star:

  • Interiors - the base car already has a somewhat detailed interior, so it should be improved or modified in some way.

  • Comfort and Safety - these stats will have a lower impact, but they are still important to keep in mind.

Submissions

  • Submissions close 2025-05-19T05:59:00Z.

Changelog
  • Road-oriented cars will no longer be affected by their offroad score, offroad-oriented cars will no longer be affected by their sportiness score. Balanced builds will be judged 50-50 in this area.

  • Added game version rule.

  • Extended deadline.

Is there any guidelines at all for a preferred type of build, or is it just a matter of creativity and imagination here?

Creativity and imagination

So the brief is literally “build anything?”

Even the broadest of challenges usually have some sort of premise, because creativity is really hard to do without something (even small) to derive off of. I’m worried with this ruleset that no one’ll be able to figure anything out because no one’ll know where to start.

Well, it worked in the ARM with the most entrants this far…

This is gonna be good.

There’s already been like three ARMs with this premise, and I personally had a lot of fun building something for a challenge like that the two times I entered.

Any restriction on game version?

Yes, stable version, thanks for the reminder.

This includes any drastic alterations made using patchwork, body molding, or 3D fixtures.

Fair enough. This does fit an idea I’ve been wanting to do for some time, so I’m down.

Completely forgor :skull: but submissions are now open!

LMJ DESIGN PRESENTS THE JEFFERSON GRANJERO

A classic like the Jefferson Granjero has a large potential - but it also has to be treated with respect.

Hence, we worked with details, to still give it a consistant theme. The spiderweb grille is a nod to Elvira and her Thunderbird, while modern halo headlights (with built in turn signals in the outer pair) both looks menacing and gives a bright light output. The flip flop black/purple paint with sparkling metalflake and a metallic gold roof as an accent will sure attract looks - so will the wirespoke wheels clad with low profile tyres.

The triple exhaust, the shaved door handles, the reworked taillights…all contributes to this being a very personal car while still keeping the soul of the original.

Under its shell it is no longer the 50s. We started by building a new frame out of way stronger and lighter steel than the original. A C4 Corvette ZR1 donated its axles, brakes and 6 speed transmission. Believe it or not - the engine block is still factory stock, even though it’s overhauled. But we adapted the cylinder head from a Barra and gave it a low pressure turbo - which means that it now cranks out 415 hp. Variable EPS, air suspension, ABS and a limited slip differential are other welcome additions. It now does the quartermile in 14.15 seconds, 0-100 km/h in 6.47, 80-120 in 2.92 seconds and top out a bit over 300 km/h - not too shabby for an old truck, right?

We did the same thing with the interior, mostly stock but overhauled. It is now upholstered in purple leather, with dark wood and gold anodized accents. A discrete centre console now features some additional instrumentation and a modern infotainment system, though.

The seats retains the original look, but with improved padding and additional headrests. Like the inertia reel seatbelts, it contributes to comfort and safety.

All of this can be yours for $30400. Contact LMJ Design for further info.

This restomod Granjero was a special custom job,
for a client that wanted a show-car made of his
old Granjero he inherited from his grandpa.

A sleek design was agreed upon,
where the original look of the
late 50’s Jefferson Granjero was obvious,
but carried over to the modern present-day.

The roof was cut to make it an open ride.
The windshield modified for a sporty look.
Reworked hood and matching bed.
Big 20" alloy wheels, combined with a show-worthy stance.
Doors shaved of doorhandles.
Rear indicators crafted into the tailfins.
Custom bumpers front and rear to accentuate the body-lines.
An update to the interior with luxury leather seats,
and even a premium infotainment system.

The engine got swapped for a new all aluminium
crate engine with forged inners.
A 5000cc V8 DOHC 40valve paired with 2 80mm turbo’s,
running on E85 Ethanol resulting in 753hp with 957Nm,
and revving up to 6500 RPM.
A manual 6speed on the RWD setup,
combined with a Helical LSD, TC and ABS.
0-100 in 5.0seconds, and a topspeed(on paper) of 376 km/h.

The tuning, both engine and suspension, was set to sport.
Although the car was intended just for shows,
it still has some impressive performance.
The car was never tested on an official track due to it missing a
rollbar/rollcage but the customer didn’t want any of that for his purpose.
It is however street-worthy having the
1st title of a Granjero being a convertible pick-up.
