AUTOMATION RESTOMOD CHAPTER 39: BORED OF THE RINGS
(First, I want to apologize. It turned out that the mod body I made this on didn’t disappear from the workshop at all, that was just my own mistake. However, since stable is more or less dead challenge wise, and since most people voted for Al Rilma before I turned off the poll, Al Rilma seemed to be a decent choice anyway. The problem, I guess, is that I have never ran anything on Al Rilma before, so let’s just hope that this does not end in a disaster). That also means that until the rules delib, everything is VERY preliminary).
WARZAW, POLAND, 2025
Back in the late 90s, a young Marek Grabowski was very satisified with his new-for-him 1985 Audi 80 Quattro. Despite being the base spec 4 cylinder model, it was of course a car from a different world compared to the Maluch it replaced. It was all fun and games until in 2000, when some rather simple stuff rendered it broken. Marek drove a cheap beater Polonez as a temporary replacement for a while. However, for different reasons he never got to fixing the Audi, newer cars replaced the Polonez as time went by, and the Audi was kind of a forgotten chapter.
Having some moments of nostalgia lately, he dragged out the Audi from the barn it had been stored in for all those years, and fixed its faults. However, he also found out that time had not been very kind on it.
Not only is it in a need to get lots of small and big stuff replaced that has degraded during the quarter of a century it has been stored. It’s also that compared to modern cars, maybe especially from the actual brand, a B2 generation 80 isn’t all that special anymore. Comfort, handling, performance… even if the Audi is still a “nice” car it has been surpassed by more modern designs even from low tier brands.
So, since money isn’t as much of an object as it was in the early 2000s, Marek can afford not only the repairs, but also getting a total makeover that makes it worthy enough again of saying “four rings to rule them all”. Maybe your restomod shop is the one that has the right ideas for him?
PRIORITIES
![]()
EXTERIOR DESIGN
I mean, in ARM this shouldn’t need an explaination after all. Classic cars are all about style, if you don’t care about looking cool, it’s easier to just buy a modern car than getting an old one restomodded.
![]()
DRIVEABILITY
He wants it to drive like a more modern car, now with things like AWD it wasn’t a bad one to start with, especially not for its time, just keep up the good tradition.
COMFORT
Another thing that was more than well enough for its era, but things have moved on since the 80s, so bring it into the modern days here.
PRESTIGE
This is what the Audi brand is much about nowadays, and he also wants to kind of resurrect the feeling from his youth when the car felt like a symbol of prestige. It’s just that almost 30 years later, so much more is required to get there.

PERFORMANCE
The 4 cylinder version of the 80Q was a bit lacking in this area, making it less of a slug would be appreciated, but he does not need a R8 beater.
SPORTINESS
I mean, the actual version wasn’t all that sporty but it would not hurt to give a little nod to the motorsports pedigree it kind of has from its “big brother”….
RELIABILITY
He’s not very keen of having to park the car in a barn for 25 more years.
AUTHENTICITY
80s Audis are a bit special in their engineering and style, getting all of it blown out would be a bit sad.

FUEL ECONOMY
It’s never fun to pay too much for gas, but making the car less fun for the sake of it might not be good either.
PURCHASE PRICE
He can afford to stay inside the budget, but as usual, the same results for less money is always an advantage.
SERVICE COSTS
Don’t go silly on them, watch out where you land.
SAFETY
It’s not all that bad to start with compared to lots of other cars from its era, good if you don’t make it worse though, and even better if you can improve it.

INTERIOR DESIGN
An interior somewhat resembling stock is there. If you can improve on it, it might render you some extra points. If you don’t change it, or even makes it worse, you still won’t lose anything, since I know not all of you likes interiors.
GENERAL RULES
Clone both the imported model and engine family before you start modding. Nowadays this can all be done with one button of the Car Designer tab in Automation - the one circled red in the photo below. It has changed location slightly in the beta but the icon looks the same.
Set all dates (model year, trim year, engine family/variant year) to 2020. It is highly recommended to exit the game and reopen it after cloning it and before updating the dates.
Maximum price (as shown in the statistics tab, Summary section): $30,000
No race parts (race intake, race tubular exhaust, racing tyres). Semi slicks allowed. V16s allowed (I doubt that it is a good idea, but still allowed)
Default +5 TP everywhere, as the car was originally made with.
A reasonable use of quality. I don’t want to see, for example, +15 on turbos and then -15 on safety. I am not sure that I want to set any hard limits here, but overly cheesy use of it WILL have its consequences in judging.
Beta (Al-Rilma) version of the game.
You’re of course allowed to ask an unlimited number of questions regarding the challenge in itself and its rules etc. - but also, you’re allowed to ask (privately, via DM) the client two personal questions about preferences that might affect how you want to build your car.
CAR RULES
The general rule of ARM is to not make a car worse. Now, a very marginal drop in one single stat if it really bumps up the others will not instabin the car, so this is a very soft rule indeed, but still, try to avoid it at all costs.
Unleaded premium fuel. Sure, lower grade unleaded won’t be a bin but it won’t help you either.
The car should appear street legal and useable without too much struggle. Just use common sense there. I won’t bin anyone for “this turn signal sits 2 cm too low” but the most important parts has to be there still.
No change of chassis type or material.
No change of body type.
The car should be able to pass WES8.
Unless it is for something silly, ATS is allowed if the change can’t be done via engineering.
COST PENALTIES
Panel material can be changed for a $2000 cost penalty.
Changing engine orientation will give a $3500 cost penalty.
Changing suspension type will give a $1000 penalty per axle.
A complete engine swap will give a $2000 penalty.
Only a cylinder head change will give a $500 penalty
Using morphs/3d/patchwork that radically alters the look of the car will give a $2000 penalty.
Changing drive type to FWD or RWD will give a $5000 penalty (to balance out the fact that it is an AWD car that won’t get any cheaper to build just because you leave out the AWD system). Changing to another AWD (or 4x4, though it feels highly irrelevant here) system will only give a $500 penalty.
Changing gearbox to anything else than another manual will give a $500 penalty.
SUBMISSIONS
Start of submissions: Saturday the 25th of october, 7 PM CEST. Yes, a whole week of rules delib since Al Rilma is a totally new world for me and I highly appreciate if you point out everything I didn’t think about here. Until then, everything is extremely preliminary
Closure of submissions: Saturday the 15th of november, 7 PM CET. This might change in case any updates will drop before then, that changes things too much.
