Bavarian Rallye Challenge: The Real Deal [FINISHED]

Thank you Der Bayer & helpers, it has been great fun!

Well I am a bit surprised. The car I thought would do well did really badly, the car I thought would do really badly, ended in the first 25. Surprise.

Excellent competition! I learned way more than I will remember. haha

BRC1100 is a 37th finish, and with the exception of the 6th stage, managed only a 20s deficit with each stage. I was fiddling with my cars some more last night and managed to drop nearly 5s from my BRC1100 car and almost 12s from my S1000 car (on the 1st stage that is). Of course, adding 25% more kW certainly was an improvement. If only I had taken the time to do that BEFORE the submission deadline!

A very special and heart-felt thank you to Der Bayer and the others who helped put this together, and to each and every competitor who commented here. I learned almost as much reading comments about the races as I did from actually running in them.

It has been a great competition, i’d like to thank Der Bayer and all the staff fo their work!
Can’t wait to take part in the next challenge

There will be no next challenge (at least I won’t host another one).

By the time Martin would have the motivation back to get on another one, we will have a revamped multiplayer mode that hosts these challenges daily! So no need for another one  looking forward to seeing you all in multiplayer mode then.

By the time he gets his motivation back? Wow, so new multiplayer in a week confirmed. :smiling_imp:

In all seriousness, it was a fun event. Very important for the Automation community in many ways and yeah… thumbs up

Well my car wasn’t last haha

Just 71 out of 80 so needing some work in the future, learned a lot looking at how the winning cars were built

Thanks for hosting the event Der Bayer and for those who took the time to help .
But then you would have to drive slowly over the bump and it would have to have the right profile. Driving slow would mean that the body has time to move upwards, too. It’s about finding the right balance of speed and height of the obstacle. Finding that compromise is not easy, because 500 kg cars and 3000 kg cars have to drive with the same speed if you want results you can compare. But if you drive too fast with a light car, it just bounces all over the place.

Just for info: The currently used 2 cm bump is a short (0.05 seconds -> 0.5 meters long at 10 m/s) rectangular profile.
Without knowing the intricacies of how the bump test translates to cornering figures, increasing the size of the bump does sound like a good idea. After all, a small car with small wheels is far more likely to become skittish on rough roads than big cruisers and that’s a major real world observation, so it may make sense to penalise small cars in terms of tameness and comfort in a similar way.

Just my 2 cents there

Big cars already score a lot higher in the bump test, so that’s not the problem. The problem is that bottoming out is not a big issue in the (small) bump test. Bottoming out can happen to big cars and small cars. And therefor I’d like to see another (big) bump test. Less important than the small one in general, but penalising when bottoming out quite a bit.

Does that mean the random track generator that Der Bayer uses will work in the game, or will the challenges just work on the standard in game tracks?

I hope there will still be large community month long builds! :sunglasses:

My generator is really crappy. I bet Caswal can build a better one in less than an hour. I don’t know if there will be some randomness in the tracks in multiplayer or if there will be just random limits.

A random track generator is not difficult to make and the one Martin used had it’s share of problems, so we’d make one from scratch for multiplayer rallye challenges.

I hope the sense of novelty when a challenge like this comes around won’t be spoiled when we can do more frequent challenges. I worried that when challenges become less rare, it may become less fun… Or I could be wrong :stuck_out_tongue:.

albeit my mediocre finish it was a fun competition, thanks again bayer!
also congratulations to the wrt team for such an impressive entry and of course also to ulukay for being able to keep up with them!

maybe the results will also be helpful for the devs to show how certain things like suspension could be further improved to make this game better.
its a bit like in many racing simulations, where the fastest hotlaps are often driven with slightly odd setups that nobody would use in reality, not even for qualifying.

Funnily enough I used what I learnt from the brc to retune my own cars and improved its balance to shave off a further 0.2% off my time around nordschleife :stuck_out_tongue:

I apologise for bumping this thread long after the contest itself already finished, but there’s some exciting news which I hope you’ll find worth your while:

First, the World Rally Team (Stryfe, Jakgoe, TheTom and yours truly) would like to thank Der Bayer and his assistants, the developers of Automation and everybody who participated in the BRC. Not only was it great fun with all the excitement (and controversy) of a big racing event, but many of us came away learning something about building cars (and some of us discovered an unusual idiosyncrasy of the program’s bump testing as compared to real life conditions).

We understand that a) Der Bayer will not run a second BRC, and that b) in-game multiplayer road racing challenges are in development that will supersede the forum-based model. However, that mode appears to be quite a while away, and I’m sure many of you would quite like to see more of these events in the meantime.

So we’re pleased to announce that we’ve been given the go-ahead to run another rally. It won’t be exactly the same as the BRC and it certainly won’t carry the same name, but it will aim to capture the spirit of the original.

Stay tuned for further developments, I’d say give it a couple of weeks. We hope to see you there!

Wonderful drawing and nice to see you guys continue!
