You may wonder why I am releasing all of the cars in different parts, well, it is so I do not lose interest in my company, doing loads of trims for the same car can be tedious work as a lot of you may know so splitting the cars into sections makes it a little less tedious and repetetive.

Is YA something like Dacia?

Not quite, they sit on the same platform as the more expensive Brivio and Horyuji models, Kelet is more like Dacia as it uses previous generation bodies and engines, I haven’t shown any new Kelet cars yet

I’m happy for people to plug relevant cars especially if there is a bit of a rivallry (real companies love to dig at eachother), I’m way too polite to tell people off for it but it was an innocent mistake on doncornaldie’s part.

Thanks Adam those two are the designs I’m most proud of, the design is just the tip of the iceberg though, the appropriate 70’s and 80’s colour lists are what really make that car :smile: can’t wait to show it off a bit more

Enjoy this little history lesson on the founder of Kelet Autógyár

Dömötör Budai

Dömötör Budai was the ‘founder’ and CEO of Kelet Autógyár, what wasn’t known about him until recently was his time spent in Germany as a KGB spy. After retirement little was heard from Budai but family say he spent his last 12 years in Bratislava restoring classic cars. He died in 2011 aged 74 after falling asleep at the wheel and colliding with a concrete barrier.

Early Life

Budai was born in 1937 in the small town of Badacsonytomaj
in Hungary. He was the oldest of 5 children to Henrik and Lilla Budai. Henrik was a shop keeper so he did not have much money to support his family. Luckily Dömötör was schooled up until the age of 16 in 1953 when he went and worked with his father

Career

In 1954 he was forcefully recruited by the KGB and spent 5 years in training which included German lessons. At 22 years old he was sent to Hamburg under the identity of Luitger Gerst. He worked for the KGB in Germany until 1972 when he was leaked by a fellow KGB defector. He swiftly returned to Hungary to resume his old life, he was stationed in the KGB offices in Keszthely where he worked internal affairs.

In 1975 an opportunity came up to be part of a new project, this project was Kelet Autógyár, this was part of the Soviet attempt to prove to the West that they can build cars too. Dömötör was not directly involved with designing the cars but he ran most of the day to day operations and headed meetings, he was essentially the spokesperson for Kelet Autógyár.

In 1987 he was handed full control of the operations of the company after proving himself for some time, and continued running the company until 1991.

In 1991 the fall of the USSR meant that there was serious unrest in the industrial side of things so Kelet closed for 6 months while everything was being sorted out, what Dömötör didn’t realise is that he never told the workers about the factory being closed, so cars were still being made until the materials ran out and factory workers fell tired of not receiving their pay checks. After confrontation by the worksforce Dömötör gave each worker that stayed working a car and a pay chunk, unfortunately this threw Kelet into a lot of problems.

1993 Came around and Dömötör had lost hope for Kelet, he was considering shutting the factory for good, fortunately he had an idea to look for an investor, after 2 months of searching he found a company that was willing to invest, Dömötör was very well loved by his workforce as he kept the towns main money maker afloat.

In 1995 Brivio bought Kelet out completely but Dömötör was allowed to stay in charge and ran Kelet under Brivio instruction right up until 2001 when he finally retired.

Personal Life

In 1967 Dömötör married a tour guide from Hamburg named Karla Wendell, they had two children while living in Germany but all of this was done under the name of Gerst. Karla was one of Dömötör’s recruits so she knew why he was rarely home.

Upon moving back to Hungary in 1972 his wife and children adopted the Budai surname, both of Dömötör’s children ended up working for him until in 1992 when they moved back to Hamburg.

In 2001 when Dömötör retired he decided to move to Bratislava where he spent his days restoring and showing classic cars with his wife.

In 2011 Dömötör was killed in a car accident when he fell asleep at the wheel after taking the wrong pills, he was travelling at 240km/h late for a hospital appointment and ploughed straight into the partition separating the the two carriage ways.

1950 Brivio Roma


1950 was the first year for public sale of any Brivio vehicle, the Roma was designed between 1944 and 1947 by the sister of the founder, the car is nothing revolutionary but it did sell like hot cakes when it was released in 1950.

The 1979 Brivio Roma


The 1979 Roma is a product of financial difficulty, we spent way too much money developing the twin cam engines, the car isn’t all that impressive but the chassis is designed for extra versatility, the longitudinally mounted engine means the car comes FWD as standard with a 4x4 version, but sports trims will follow later in RWD/AWD.
