New for 1991, the Auraelion introduced a new pillar into Voltari’s sedan lineup, slotting in between the front-wheel drive Iconis, and the larger, rear-wheel drive Halcyon. Riding on the all new VRDC (Voltari Rear Drive- Compact) platform, the Auraelion brought rear wheel drive athleticism and a compact size together, into one cohesive package. The Auraelion had a choice of I4 or I6 powertrains, both petrol and diesel. The model shown here is the mid-level Prestige 3.0i x4. It’s powered by an all new “A-Series” 3.0L 24-valve inline-6, producing 215hp and 204lb-ft of torque, which is routed through either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed electronically controlled automatic, then to all four wheels. As it turns out, carefully placing an all aluminium block and heads, no less than 24 valves with variable lifters and a multi point electric fuel injection system in a box and then shaking it around aggressively happens to create 210 hp with a delicious roar all the way up to 7000 rpm. Honestly quite incredible.

Boasting a 5 speed manual gearbox, a limited slip RWD differential and a top speed of 250km/h, all paired with a near centred weight distribution, the Hergenrother 20 makes the perfect candidate for an affordable and practical sports car.

The New Baumhauer 4 Series



Summary

The Baumhauer 4 Series is a compact executive car, and a more upscale version of the 3 Series Baumhauer which serves the lower end of the same market. First launched in 1986, the 3/4 Series received a major facelift in 1991 which brought both cosmetic and mechanical changes to the car. The 3/4 Series had a wide choice of engines ranging from four to five cylinders, though a six-cylinder engine would also be available starting in 1992.

The model shown is the Baumhauer 425 Vier 20V, which has a 2.5 litre engine producing 188hp which is sent to the ground via the Vier™ advanced all-wheel drive system. The 425 comes with either a four speed automatic or a five speed manual, and can be ordered with a set of CWS™ wheels for a subtly sporty appearance.

Just a quick update regarding the, er, update… though the release of LCV 4.2.18 has brought some important changes and fixes, as far as I can tell there haven’t been any that should affect this round substantially.

Intro

The Kaizen Class 4 is the compact executive of the Kaizen lineup. Often considered the vehicle that not only rescued Kaizen from financial ruin, but also became the first example of the modern Kaizen philosophy that we recognize today.

First introduced in 1983, the K403 generation was designed to counter strong European competition while introducing the brand to a whole new generation of young professionals who desired a expertly engineered and fully modern premium sports sedan.

Kaizen opted for thoroughly modern technology to meet these standards and utilized an all-new design for the 4-wheel independent suspension, a Kaizen first that would be implemented in future models. 4-wheel ventilated discs and alloy wheels were standard on all trims, along with Bosch multi-port electronic fuel injection. Finally, a more boxy yet aerodynamic design, blending elegance and functionality, was adopted.

Offered with a modular variations of 4 and 6 cylinder engines, standard top trim models have always received a 3.0L inline 6 shared with Kaizen’s larger offerings.

Up until the end of production in 1993, 6 more Technical Updates would further up the ante, adding additional standard features such as a cassette player, variable valve timing, traction control, a front passenger airbag, and retractable cooling flaps. ​

For 1990 the 4th Technical Update (TU4) was implemented, and the standard top trim became the FC24. A new 240 hp engine that was shared with the larger Class 6 and Class 8 models debuted, still paired with the choice of a 5-speed manual or a ZF 4HP 4-speed automatic transmission. Finally, on the inside, a new front passenger airbag was added as standard for all trims.

The Cabirou Montpelier

Details

In the 1980s, Cabirou began work on developing a milestone in the brand’s history: a compact car. It would be underpinned by Turból’s Global C Platform, shared with Legion and Homura. However, having seen earlier in the decade the failure of a rival’s first attempt at a compact fail spectacularly, Cabirou knew that a a few features and a few badges weren’t going to cut it to make this car, dubbed the Montpelier, a success.

Much of that development work came under the skin. Compared to its platform-mates, the Montpelier utilized completely unique suspension, developed by advanced, computer-aided design for the best ride possible. While Legion and Homura models would use inline 4 and flat 4 engines, in the Cabirou, V6 power would come standard: the 2.8 liter variant of the V8-based Turból 3000 Series, attached exclusively to the EAM4 electronically controlled automatic transmission. With the changes in suspension, the Cabirou would be produced on it’s own production line, with exacting quality control standards, and an interior designed to blend cost-effective material usage with exceptional fit and finish. The re-engineering of the Montpelier pushed back its introduction to late 1989, as a 1990 model.

Initially introduced with just a single trim level, 1991 introduced two trim levels, the SE and LE. While the LE was effectively the same as the '90 model, the SE was slightly decontented in an attempt to bring down the starting price, with cost-saving measures such as steel wheels with chrome covers and the omission of a moonroof. All 1991 models benefited from an update to the 2.8 V6, the introduction of variable valve timing.

As was the case with all Cabirou models, it was designed with the North American market in mind, but it was imported in an official capacity to Europe. Large, luxurious Cabirou models had historically been offered in a small capacity alongside sporting Turbóls in the Turból Group’s European Premium Division as something of a novelty, but with the C segment Montpelier, Turból expected the small Cabirou to find some decent popularity on the continent.

1991 Midlands Ceres GX-4

From the outside, the 1991 Midlands Ceres GX-4 appears to be a fairly normal middle premium estate car. Smooth, CAD assisted bodywork design gives it a sporty, refined look that wouldn’t be out of place on something of German origin. On closer inspection, however, the quirks of the trusted Midlands formula begin to show. The fuel door is on the front fender instead of the rear, there’s a subtle bump on the boot floor, and the transmission tunnel is surprisingly flat. These all signal to what current Midlands owners know well and what classic VW and Porsche owners would probably guess at. The Ceres GX-4 is a rear engined estate car. A rear engined, rear biased AWD estate car. This means you not only have the rear cargo space of an estate car, but the frunk space of any other rear engined car. Collapse the split folding rear bench for even more cargo space and enjoy the cavernous space you now have. The Ceres GX-4 shows just how practical living with a Midlands estate can be.

Those of you who may still be reticent about owning something as unusual as a rear engined car can rest assured that the Midlands Ceres GX-4, in fact the majority of Midlands rear engined offerings, are just as easy to drive as your average rwd sedan. Long gone are the days of the unpredictable swing axel snap oversteer and complaining of certain American activists. Midlands trusts in a safer, more stable Macpherson strut layout that has proven roots in rally racing. If our suspension engineering can keep our monstrously powerful Group B rally cars firmly planted on gravel and dirt roads, just think of how well it will handle the tarmac of your daily commute, or even the cobblestones of the historic sides of town. Another bit of technology pulled from Midland’s rally efforts is the Ceres GX-4’s awd system. Paired with the tried and true Midlands 2.8L V6, you have a combo that provides stability and torque when and where you need it. 205 hp, 7.5 seconds to 60, and tuning that allows the Ceres GX-4 to pull almost a full G will make you totally forget that you’re driving an estate.

The interior of the Ceres GX-4 is typical premium Midlands. Soft leather seats, cherry wood veneers, and wool carpets constantly remind you that this is a uniquely British machine. The dash is well appointed, with a modern rounded design that hides both driver and passenger airbags seamlessly. The ergonomics of the driver’s side are crafted so that every switch is just within arms reach with minimal effort and the 4 speed automatic gear box has responsiveness needed for everyday driving, while also having a manual mode for a spicier driving experience. Traction control and ABS are standard, as is variable power steering. The premium Alpine sound system fills the cabin nicely and you would be hard pressed to remember that the engine is just on the other side of the rear seats. Engine maintenance is fairly straightforward too, no having to drop the whole rear of the car just to change spark plugs or the oil. All of that can be done from the relative comfort of the boot, just lift off the cover and get to work. All of these considerations, and more we haven’t mentioned, are what make living with the Midlands Ceres GX-4 feel like the best parts of sportscar and estate car ownership.

As a prestigious brand known for luxury sports cars and premium cruisers branching out to larger markets now, the Cormorant was a first step into the D segment market worldwide.

The Cormorant is offered in a variety of different trims but the focus is on the 190I: The sports premium package.

Featuring a 2.5 litre inline 6 with Arion’s own AEVT (Augmented Electromagnetic Valve Technology) system providing 189hp by 188lb-ft. Able to achieve .95g’s in cornering, 0-60mph in 7.26s and 151mph top speed through a 5-gear manual transmission paired to viscous LSD in a RWD configuration.

To most people it may seem a little untamed and uncivilised, though with variable hydraulic power steering, ABS and traction control as well as the highest standard advanced safety measures fitted, the Cormorant 190I provides a silky smooth controllable experience when not driven to the limit.

On the inside, 5 premium seats with a high-end sound system come standard, with an optional sunroof as extra. The exterior is equipped with sports lower trim bodykit, 17’ alloy wheels, fog lights, headlight washers and wipers, roof racks and roof spoiler, accent-matching mudflaps as well as sports oval exhaust tips for the finest road presence around.

The practicality of the Cormorant is another strong suit, able to carry up to 816.8kg of weight and tow 1042kg which is enough for a reasonable sized caravan. It is also able to reach over 40mpg (UK) combined, (32.1mpg City, 48.2mpg Motorway.) keeping fuel costs down.

Unlike most Arions, being mass-produced at several locations worldwide, the servicing costs are surprisingly low for such a premium motor.
