CW8 - Young and Dumb [FINISHED]

I saw th ping and thought my car was binned! Didn’t expect such a high score for coolness but it has me excited with every bit!

I’m shocked I even got 18 points there. I guess a “muscle” car was missing the brief a little, but, I thought I could make it work. Can’t wait to tumble further down the order with my shoddy engineering but cool nonetheless to participate in my first (non binned) challenge. Maybe I’ll be a little less adventurous next time.

Hell yeah dead last

Funny enough I made two other variants of the R190, a 200hp turbo and a 250hp V8. But the drivabillity would tank with either of those engines fitted, def a skill issue on my part with the tuning. That and the fact that I really wanted it to weigh under 800kg is why I went for the base, low power engine. Still very happy to score mid-pack and excited for the next results!

I took a lot of brave pills just to send in an actual mid-engined supercar in a field filled with lesser mid-range sports cars (whether they were front-, rear-, or mid-engined), but as bold as it was, I toyed with the even crazier idea of submitting a V12-powered flagship from the class above (again, mid-engined like the V8-powered LS35) before settling on the saner LS35, albeit heavily revised with this challenge in mind. The reason why I spurned the V12 option was because I felt it would either be too min-maxed to be viable, or score too inconsistently across all criteria, or both.

Still, I have no regrets over choosing the LS35 in favor of all my other options - I picked it with a “go big or go home” mentality, although such a way of thinking has its limits sometimes.

You know when you’re watching F1 and your favourite driver is first but they still have to pit and you’re hoping they’ll keep the position despite knowing it’s not going to happen?

That’s how I feel right now.

I feel like I’m also cooked on drivability (I should’ve gone with all wheel drive)

well at least im not last or binned so thats great

The cars are in the order I imported them. Score from 0-20.
These are distributed in comparison to other entries, (ie normal CW rules)
28 cars to go through.

@AKA_NOBUDDY
2000 CBC Carrier SX

A light car with an explosive turbo spool at 3500rpm doesn’t make for a particularly driveable car. The powerband doesn’t overlap on the gearing but perhaps more importantly the car only has ABS and no power steering. A true drivers car, but not one for traffic.

8.6/20

@bang6111
1997 Revuelto Calista

A large unweidly supercar will never peform well in day to day driving no matter how much technology is thrown at it, active suspension, esc and power steering still isn’t enough to save the Calista from a below average score.

9.1/20

@DuceTheTruth100
2020 DDS Rayzr

A relatively flat N/A power curve and well spread gears along with modern tech gives the Rayzr a good score.

14.3/20

@abg7
1995 LVC LS35 3.2

A large amount of torque available throughout the powerband, the gears are spaced a little widely with no overlap but the rest of the car is well tuned towards driving. This allows the RWD LS35 to still manage an exactly average score for the round.

10.8/20

@George
1994 Kaze 660 Mono

spooling at 5300rpm but with enough extra rpm that the gears somehow have decent spacing and softer suspension contribute to a worryingly high score for such major issues. Automation really needs to fix the torque curve calcs :smiling_face_with_tear:

10.9/20

@Happyhungryhippo
2009 Cavaliere Nobile Teramo 2000t

A good score for being RWD, it’s got all the technology you’d expect, ESC, Electric variable steering, even adaptive dampers.

13.2/20

@karhgath
2017 Phénix Alcyone Targa XS

Well optimised suspension and gearing, smooth engine powerband gives the Phénix Alcyone Targa XS an impressove score for being RWD.

15.5/20

@Knugcab
2005 Rauk Urd

Very flat torque curve with early turbo spool, unfortunately there isn’t much in the way of tech on the Rauk Urd, only ABS and a manual steering rack. A true drivers car, lacking the normal driver aids for the year it was made.

7.4/20

@kookie & @vero94773
2016 Dalmas élysée3 DSi

The FWD Dalmas élysée3 DSi has a 6 speed DCT, adaptive dampers, electric power steering and ESC. Along with early turbo spool from the engine I’m surprised it didn’t place higher this round. Perhaps it was limited by the suspension choice and tuning of it.

14.4/20

@mart1n2005
2015 Vertex Chiltern Sprint

ESC, Variable hydraulic power steering and well optimised gearing give a good baseline. It could’ve been improved further if the oversteer characteristic was solved.

12.6/20

@oldmanbuick
2016 Constellation N724 R-Spec

Scoring the maximum for this round, the Constellation N724 R-Spec has AWD, optimised gearing and active suspension, ESC and electric variable power steering. Truly as good as it’s going to get. Driveability: 90.8

20/20

@Sealboi
1999 SKCC C-80 MBV8

By contrast, the least driveable car is the road going group C car? 44.7 driveability, almost 24 points behind the average (68.4) in drivability and less than half of the top score. Partly because it’s huge compared to other entries but also poor tuning on all fronts.
1/20

@Texaslav & @debonair0806
2003 Somervell SBP Switchblade 140 Special

Manual steering rack, but ESC and well tuned suspension give a good score, the engine is well balanced in response too.

12.2/20

@the-chowi
2020 Llud Elene R295

Scoring exactly average for the round, semi slicks and manual steering rack together aren’t making the most driveable car. It does have ESC and benefits a lot from a 1800rpm spool but the weight distribution is well to the rear of the car.

10.8/20

@toxicnet
2002 Rocket - Jupiter S

Power steering, ESC and very well tuned suspension give a lot of bonus, unfortunately the turbo spools at 2700rpm and undoes a lot of the tuning effort around the rest of the car.

13.2/20

@Ultimate_Billy
1996 Bovos Pike S

All wheel drive, power steering and ESC as well as softly tuned suspension make the Pike S very driveable, giving positives in every section.

15.7/20

@xsneakyxsimx
1980 Chèvre Panier - MR-6S

Staggered tyres, manual steering rack and no driver assists. Limited by the technology of the time.

7.1/20

@ThatEpicBob
2016 Kuruma C2 4-210

A turbo spooling at 3600rpm and staggered tyres force this entry to be well under average

7.5/20

@AndiD
2012 Mara Paragon Kabriolet 2.3 SE42 by N7 Garage

Electric variable steering, ESC, simple naturally aspirated engine and well tuned suspension gives a large bonus to driveability, scoring top 3 in the round.

16.7/20

@Edsel
1972 Aero 848

The oldest car in the group avoids being last in the round thanks to the SKCC C-80 and the Superlight Tango. Near perfect weight distribution and well tuned suspension allow the Aero 848 to gain a few points here.

4.7/20

@moroza & doesstuff
2013 Nordwagen Loki RS 4x4

All wheel drive, square sports tyres and ESC give the Loki RS 4x4 a top 5 for driveability, however it does sacrifice it a little in favour of sportiness, with manual steering rack, extremely high throttle response and a rear biased AWD setup.

15.5/20

@tsarchasm
2020 N660 / NipponRacing

Square sports tyres, ESC and electric variable steering give this car the second highest driveability in the round.

18.5/20

@Danicoptero
1980 Superlite Tango 115S

Supremely light, but lacking in overall grip. In real life this setup would be fine so it’s a shame that automation penalises it so heavily. The engine is very sensitive to throttle, again another thing that automation penalises heavily. Perhaps a more expensive model of the Superlight Tango would be better suited, or even a newer model to gain some technology benefits.

2.3/20

@Isabella
1982 Hexe Mildred BT6

Although scoring on the lower end, it’s actually impressive how little assists this car has and that it still scores above the bottom. No abs, manual steering rack, staggered tyres and a 5 speed manual. All wheel drive does help but the suspension tuning is what helps the most. The turbo spool isn’t too early and it’s not too late either.

9.5/20

@Ritz
2008 Norrsken Aquila RS Sportster

ESC in a modern car, despite the staggered tyres plenty of quality in that department gives a good balance to the car. Only let down by manual steering rack.

13.2/20

@Lil_Cretin
1989 RennHart R190 Si M-Package

Staggered tyres, manual steering rack and only abs. The age of the car starts to show.

6.1/20

@GassTiresandOil
1996 Durendal Ballina

Manual steering rack and semi slick tyres, means that the driveability bonus is limited, scoring right around average.

10.5/20

@iastr_0
1992 Hossack Kingfisher GS

Skinny staggered semi slick tyres with -5 quality on makes the car a bit unwieldy. The -5 quality is I assume to make up for the choice of magnesium wheels, which in all honesty isn’t necessary and would’ve benefited from some positive quality alloys, probably being the same weight with much better stats. Manual steering rack also harms driveability.

8.2/20

Average driveability this round: 68.44

Fun fact of the round
The heaviest car is the Dalmas élysée3 DSi at 1459Kgs
The lightest car is the Superlite Tango 115S at 650kgs, half the weight!

Next round will be Sportiness.

This took considerably longer than I wanted it to, formatting alone took multiple hours for this dumb table and copying scores across, with writing a little bit about each car as to why it might’ve got xyz score.

I thought the drivability was based on the score given in automation, now i regret some decisions i made to buff that stat…

It should, highest score was 90.8 and 80 gave 15-ish points, comments made by Riley are all elements that affects drivability so I do not think Riley looked at anything else.

1 Like

I can be wrong but I had 78ish as the score, I have to check my car again

Honestly better than expected for a car with no assists.

Well, the Urd was never supposed to be a normal car for 2005, so. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m delighted to pick up a win on one round, even though it was definitely an easier task with a more recent car than what some folks were working with in submissions of an older vintage.

Now it’s time to sit back, relax, and wait for all of my drivability-oriented engineering choices to come back and bite me in the sportiness round! :rofl:

hell yeah at least i aint in last

That’s my spot and I’m keeping it

By contrast, the least driveable car is the road going group C car?

who on earth would have expected that, lol

@AKA_NOBUDDY
2000 CBC Carrier SX

A very long ratio 5 speed might be great for fuel economy and just touching the top speed of 186, but it’s not very fun in the twisties.

8.3/20

@bang6111
1997 Revuelto Calista

Suspension is tuned to be an all rounder, and with something with a more premium interior is also heavy, power steering is needed but it takes away from the experience.

6.9/20

@DuceTheTruth100
2020 DDS Rayzr

Lots of nice gadgets like adaptive dampers and variable power steering, however it still doesn’t stack up compared to much more sport focused entries that are lighter.

5.9/20

@abg7
1995 LVC LS35 3.2

It almost looks like sportiness tuning was an afterthought, the car is optimised for driveability in the gearbox, and a soft comfort oriented suspension. That and being on the heavier side of most entries the LVC doesn’t score very well.

5.5/20

@George
1994 Kaze 660 Mono

An inline 3, long ratio 5 speed gearbox tuned horrendously, suspension also doesn’t know what it wants to be, a sports car or a commuter.

4/20
@Happyhungryhippo
2009 Cavaliere Nobile Teramo 2000t

The turbo makes the car a lot quieter, the 6 speed gearbox isn’t well tuned towards sportiness, wide ratios at the start and close at the end.

5.8/20

@karhgath
2017 Phénix Alcyone Targa XS

Well optimised sport suspension and lightness kept in mind everywhere, the car even has launch control.

14.1/20

@Knugcab
2005 Rauk Urd

The turbo gives all it’s torque at the start of the power band, the 6 speed gearbox does have good powerband overlap, but the first few gears are too widely spaced to really get peak performance.

8.6/20

@kookie & @vero94773
2016 Dalmas élysée3 DSi

5 seats here hurt the overall feel of the car. The suspension is very pointy, perhaps to the extreme as it looks like the car would snap oversteer at any moment.

4.2/20

@mart1n2005
2015 Vertex Chiltern Sprint

The suspension is tuned for oversteer at all times but it does seem controllable, the gearing is a little widely spaced and there isn’t too much powerband to make use of. Not that it matters too much because the car is very light.

7.8/20

@oldmanbuick
2016 Constellation N724 R-Spec

The suspension is a little soft for a sports car, and the gearing is extremely long with not much powerband to use at the top end.
Despite this there is active sport suspension and the all wheel drive system provides plenty of grip.

11.7/20

@Sealboi
1999 SKCC C-80 MBV8

Thankfully the SKCC manages to claw some points back here, with an extreme suspension tune and basically nothing else that could harm sportiness. Running a 5.0L V8 to only the rear wheels though does make the car a little bit of a handful.

11.9/20

@Texaslav & @debonair0806
2003 Somervell SBP Switchblade 140 Special

The suspension is balanced, the gearing is balanced and the engine makes a good noise. Very nice.

14.5/20

@the-chowi
2020 Llud Elene R295

The suspension is on the soft side which is surprising, the gearing has a good amount of powerband to use but it’s still a little long.

12.1/20

@toxicnet
2002 Rocket - Jupiter S

This car actually has the lowest sportiness (of the remaining field) which is 36.7
It’s not actually a low number particularly but it’s outclassed in every aspect. It’s heavy, so it requires power steering. The soft tuned suspension and the gearing is tuned towards driveability rather than sportiness.

1.8/20

@Ultimate_Billy
1996 Bovos Pike S

A 5 speed gearbox and very soft suspension don’t help the Bovos much here, but AWD gives plenty of grip and works with the semi active suspension quite well.

7/20

@xsneakyxsimx
1980 Chèvre Panier - MR-6S

Very soft suspension and only having the option of a 5 speed gearbox for the time is limiting the performance quite a bit.

4.4/20

@ThatEpicBob
2016 Kuruma C2 4-210

Poor powerband and standard hydraulic power steering, along with a quiet engine because of the turbo, it’s not a very appealing package.

3.4/20

@AndiD
2012 Mara Paragon Kabriolet 2.3 SE42 by N7 Garage

The suspension is a little soft but it’s well balanced overall, there’s not much wrong but there’s also not much boosting the Mara up the ratings.

7.5/20

@Edsel

For it’s age the Aero 848 is impressive, well tuned suspension and a great quality five speed manual. If you had a talented driver it would certainly keep up with a lot of cars from the modern era. It is held back by being so old though, that is a fact.

6.7/20

@moroza & doesstuff
2013 Nordwagen Loki RS 4x4

The suspension is on the stiffer side, but not so much that it comprimised any driveability. The AWD system gives plenty of grip and the gearbox is of good quality although perhaps a little too long on the ratios. Excellent throttle response and a very light car for how much tech it’s got in it, like active suspension and a sport undertray.

20/20

@tsarchasm
2020 N660 / NipponRacing

Now, being a Kei car it’s impressive that it isn’t last by default, everything is quite well tuned, the let down is the power and the top speed.

4.5/20

@Danicoptero
1980 Superlite Tango 115S

A 4 speed manual is bold, comitting to the weight reduction. The suspension is on the stiffer side but could be stiffer. A little lacking in power and top speed for a true true sports car, but this is probably just the age of the Superlite Tango showing.

7.9/20

@Isabella
1982 Hexe Mildred BT6

Well tuned suspension and AWD give grip- no wait it’s still lacking somehow. The tyres are small, despite high quality usage it’s simply not enough tread width for the amount of torque the engine is putting out. Overall though it is a homologation car, so the rest is up to spec.

9.8/20

@Ritz
2008 Norrsken Aquila RS Sportster

Very sporty setup suspension, the engine is noisy and has good throttle response. The tyres suit the car very well and the car is light. For being RWD it’s very good. curse automation for making awd so op

16.3/20

@Lil_Cretin
1989 RennHart R190 Si M-Package

well tuned suspension, a five speed manual is a drawback but the car is very light so overall not too bad. Age again probably lets the RennHart down.

9.9/20

@GassTiresandOil
1996 Durendal Ballina

suspension is a balanced well, but the engine is a little quiet and unresponsive. Despite the semislicks the car still has wheelspin all the way through second gear.

9.1/20

@iastr_0
1992 Hossack Kingfisher GS

Active suspension is a plus, but it could be tuned towards the sporty side. The gearing is good and well spaced but negative quality semislicks probably wasn’t very smart. They’re also staggered by 10mm so why not just fix the suspension tune instead, overall a car with good intentions but let down by the tuning.
