It’s a browser thing. Chrome and Firefox do this thing, not edge or IE
I’m using Firefox though?
Sorry to be the party pooper here, while I’m all for good debate and discussion, as has been mentioned, please, please, please, keep this civil and appropriate. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong now, just please keep it that way, as this thread has the potential to go from zero to mental faster than a spaniel offered a new squeaky toy, quicker than any flags or mods can do anything.
I’m not convinced this is the right place for it, but I don’t want to just wade in and close it down based off my own opinion, so for now, carry on.
well it’s hasn’t been any problem so far, and i haven’t seen any hint of it too.
but yeah. i kinda want the power to moderate my own thread now.
though i kinda did see a lil bit of hint that it would be going down in a whole another way than any of us expected.
but as bad fitting of this thread as it is, there’s no other place to talk about this with these kind of people. the IRC and discord isn’t for everyone. so this is the closest compromise. though i do have to agree, please,
#logic over feelings here.

You are the op of the thread after all, you have the power to drag it back to or forward towards whatever topic or subject area you want to cover.
Where to next skipper? the uncharted and bottomless sea of madness that is philosophical internet debates awaits your command.
@koolkei i do agree with the above, your thread, you can guide it’s path (and i’ll try to participate more, but most of this is next level sh*t even i don’t get sometimes)
Walking into a thread like

Donald Trump
Roman Catholic

So…
Consider us all on notice! Though it is worth saying that all of us here seem to be very careful about how we’re going about this, even more so perhaps because this is not at all relevant to our forum’s purpose yet has so much nuclear potential because it’s about how we live our lives and what we believe.
@nialloftara well since squidhead got here, maybe we should consider Germany and the EU?
(Being facetious. We never really finished anything we started discussing yet)
We could consider them in the growing swell of nationalist or rightwing populism movements that have gained serious traction in several Western countries over the past few months.
Perhaps so, but in that case, what would you make of Austria’s election results?
If it would be just over the last few months, i wouldn’t be that worried. The thing is that rightwing populism has been gaining traction for almost a decade (at least in sweden) and it’s mainly fueled by falsified facts and outright lied backed by fear in the general population.
Fear of losing jobs, fear of losing housing and the general fear of the unknown and disinformation about (in our case) those seeking asylum getting large sums of money and living of welfare higher than our own citizens makes for a good huntingground for rightwing populism, it seems. That, and a growing “nationalism” (i put it in citation, because sweden is mainly built on multicultural standards from the getgo) glorifying the 50’s as a highpoint in history…
That it stands as a sharp contrast to several other countries, but the fact that hofser got so close merely illustrated the point, there’s a lot of establishment resentment swirling around, in fact to my mind it’s perfectly reasonable to date this surge back a few years and include things like the Arab spring as forerunners of this worldwide political upheaval.
I’m not sure what the end game is for this, I just hope we can get some people to Mars and try to Unite most of humanity in a common purpose of extra planetary expansion before anything irreversible happens.
That same line of anti foreigner rhetoric has been prevalent in America as well, though for is its mainly been targeted against those who come from Mexico and other central and South American nations for many years. But when I said last few months I was talking the recent surge in populists taking political control of countries, or of their movements causing support for current leaders to erode, like new Zealand, Italy, Britian, American, Brazil, and what @koolkei was talking about in Indonesia.
Ah, I see.
The thing i mostly find disturbing is that the general populace have such a hard time actually fact-check things and doing informed decisionmaking , like Brexit when a lot of people didn’t even know why and what they were voting for. Or the US election, when outright lies were told as truths and the people followed. And the same hold for a lot of rightwing-movements. They prey on fear and disinformation, and fuels it with hate. The political and humanitarian climate has grown cold over the last few years.
well in indonesia’s case, it’s because of “RELIGIOUS REASONS”.
so while what’s happening is similiar, the basis isn’t
I don’t blame people for being anti-establishment, but they should really organize and uplift a candidate or start a party which actually seeds itself in that sentiment. The democrats and republicans both have numerous incentives to stay in the current, corrupt system, as it gives them a near total monopoly on seats in all 3 branches of government. Both sides are quick to point out problems and blame the other side, but both have the reaction time of a drunk sloth ODing in cold medicine when it comes to fixing them.
Or is it! (Refer to previous posts in this thread). The parallels may be loose due to civilisations being at different points of their evolution, but the principles behind tribal human behaviours remain the same.
We haven’t mentioned the donkey in the room as yet… Bernie Sanders?
He was definitely the closest thing we had. Hell, I registered as a democrat just so I could vote for him, as I live in a closed party state. And his loss at the democratic primary (despite winning the popular vote there) definitely threw a monkey wrench into the general election.
Since the previous topics have died down here long ago, I just really wanted to rant this out somewhere since I’m assuming this is what this topic is for:
People are grouping Finland with Sweden regarding the whole migrant/refugee crisis thingy which is honest to god the weirdest thing to do.
I mean I get that a lot of those people probably live halfway across the world or something but still.
I won’t comment on the Sweden situation since I don’t live there, but i’ve seen way too many people say that Finland has a problem with these people just like Sweden or something along those lines?
I live in the “worst” city and go through the “worst neighbourhoods” regarding this whole thing. The biggest trouble I’ve gotten from anyone was when a refugee approached me to ask something and I didn’t wanna answer and walked because I’m socially awkward and Finnish (yeah strangers talking to us is offensive to our personal space)
When this thing peaked in 2015 in this area there was a gang of men who threatened to beat up anyone who A: didn’t look Finnish B: seemed gay in the slightest (as tiny of a thing as wearing a scarf) C: seemed left leaning. They did this PUBLICLY. And they really did it. They announced it, you saw them walking around, and friends, family, entire groups of people were genuinely afraid of these people.
I will admit, just like anyone else I have a bit of xenophobia in me and I slightly avoid these refugees, but I don’t let it show because I shouldn’t think this way when I don’t have any actual reason to. The worst they might do is get welfare without working but there’s already a huge portion of alcoholic Finns who do that.
But I’ve lived in the middle of the thing for this whole time and the only thing that’s gotten more dangerous in these neighbourhoods is the possibility that someone might think you’re a refugee and threaten you.
Random drunk men have taken the whole refugee thing to heart and I was personally threatened on the streets because I was speaking English with my friend and in the low light they assumed I was a refugee. (Keep in mind I’m white)
When you live in the middle of a migrant “crisis” it really pisses you off when many people compare your situation to any other country, in this case Sweden, and tell you something like “your media is lying to you!!!” and that could be true but in the opposite sense since we have an incredibly sensationalist media (even our nonprofit media) and they’re blowing the whole thing out of proportion because that makes money. But how can you use the media card on someone who lives in the middle of the “crisis”
I suspect most people outside of Scandinavia don’t know anything about any of the actual countries. I know I’m a bit sketchy on the situation of each myself.
