There’s no mistaking a two stroke. Last Detroit Diesel I heard was a series 60 we have in our fire trucks. That guy was also doing it wrong, you should never keep your hand on the shifter. It’s bad for the clutches/synchros. Plus you’ll be called a knob polisher.
Overhead valve big block buick 455 with headers and 413 cam. With a few more aftermarket items 600 streetable hp and 500+ ft lbs is a easy task. (Yes I am building one for my 70 Electra ragtop)
Next is that unmistakable sound of the nailhead. They have like most Buicks lots of torque and a bulletproof bottom end
if you prefer the full Buick exhaust sporting resonators (boulevard ride from the factory)
Of course the Chevy stovebolt inline 6. So simple in design, but bulletproof. Good on gas and cheap to fix.
I’m a V8 fan, so here are some V8’s:
Audi RS5 with Armytrix Cat-Back Valvetronic Exhaust:
great sounding 71 Charger 400
Jaguar XKR
and of course the Muscle Truck
Don’t count out a good solid inline 6. I’ve heard some wicked 4.0L Jeep engines, plus just about any Caterpillar Diesel.
Based 12-71 Detroit disagrees.
you also can’t go wrong with a good V6
I like that your idea of “purest” engine sound means uneven exhaust pulses and bad scavenging. (If crossplane)
Nah, that one had a four.
Well, since we’re talking V8s… listen to a ZMZ-66;
120 Soviet Horsepowers.
The end of the video is fairly amusing. The thing just keeps going at comically low speeds.
Absolute best engine sound in my opinion is the RB26DETT
4 cylinders:
Alpine A110
Toyota’s 20R engine
Some swedish maniac took the 4 pot in the Delta Integrale to 500hp with “slightly” reinforced internals
5 cylinder choices:
Audi Sport Quattro S1 - Group B ftw
VW’s VR5
Afla’s diesel I5
For V6 I nominate the Lancia Stratos with a KKK turbo
And some other inline sixes
Ford Barra XR6T
@BobLoblaw what you think of this?
TVR Cerbera Speed Six
AMC’s I6
V8:
Vauxhall/Holden VXR8 Bathurst Supercharged
My top 3
Top fuel dragster/funny car on launch best sound/feeling in the world.
Shelby flatplane v8
4agze letting off at 7500rpms
Says Toyota on the plastic cover.
Ferrari Challenge Stradale: One of the best sounding cars of all time IMO.
