Entries should be closed by now. Or are they? If not, I suspect the deadline’s been extended further without us knowing it.
yeah sorry about that, constantly running behind schedule as always!
Officially, entries have been closed. I count something like 16-17 unique users who have sent me something to my inbox. I have had a couple of people who have approached me ask if I had actually closed entries as they had things they had almost finished but ran out of time, and seeing as I’m also the one running behind time, I granted them an extension.
I realise this is inconsistent, so, at this point, if you have an entry that you yourself have ALMOST finished but stopped because you thought that entries were closed, let me know. I will give you until the end of Friday (+10 GMT) to complete it.
Meanwhile, I am starting to scrutinise now. Please note that if your entry is illegal, I won’t be able to accommodate fixes and resubmissions.
Further update: revised deadline is approaching! Hectic week at work (no surprises) so I am slowly constructing my scrutineering sheets from which all data will be pulled and legality and penalty points and initial performance metrics will be calculated. It’ll also help presentation later on much easier.
As of current count I have:
90s: 12
00s: 10
10s: 10
entries from 17 unique users. There were 2 users who tossed cars at me seemingly without reading the brief so their naming convention didn’t match I’ll look at them (grumble) but will take the liberty of correcting the filenames myself.
Legality of all of these entries is yet to be established. I am working over the weekend, so I will hope to get started on this process Monday, and I expect it’ll take me at least the entire week if not 2 to do that because thanks to my stupidly complicated ruleset, I have to record nearly everything LOL
1990 Turból j30 v6 24v Evo
A DTM homologation special introduced in 1990 following the DTM’s ban of turbochargers, powered by a now 2.5 liter quad cam V6 producing 234 hp in the 1193 kg liftback coupe.
2018 Turból Centurion t38
A sporty 4 seat coupe; muscle car design but a smaller, lighter package. The t38 trim is a mid level performance trim, producing 379 hp from a turbocharged 2.5 liter I4, weighing in at 1533 kg.

Sorry for the further delays in replies. I can at least reliably inform you that since the cited closing date, I’ve not received any further entries so I’m happy to declare that I’ll be processing them over the course of the next couple of weeks. I’ll advise each of you of the legality via reply DM.
Once everything’s tabulated, there will be some cuts but hopefully in such a way that everybody who entered has at least one vehicle in. No guarantees tho, it depends on the spread and the penalty points.
Took me longer than expected but have now actually finished my automated scrutineering spreadsheet, and am slowly going through the cars. In the interests of time, I will inform each of you privately of DQs or penalty points as I go as I’ll only be able to probably process 4-5 cars a day so it’ll take me the rest of this week! But at least I’ve started.
Famous last words ^
Shortly after that post I got sick while starting a new posting and it wiped me out for the entire week. Then I had a crazy next week at work because I wasn’t acquainted with the job and I suddenly had to cover a bunch of extra stuff.
Things are settling down now so I’m back into the swing of it. I can now announce that I have processed the 13 unique 90s entries (not including my test car). You should have received a DM about the outcome of your 90s entry (if not, let me know ASAP).
What I can reveal to you now is that there was 1 outright illegal entry that has been insta- . Following this there are 3 entries with 20 or more penalty points. As the next entry down on basis of penalty points has less than 10, these too will be excluded as they are significant outliers (I’ve also notified you of this via DMs).
This leaves 9 legal and reasonable entries. As I did say I’d be taking 8 per decade, I’ll be plotting the data in more detail and publishing it here before I make a decision on the final car to drop for this decade. Then I’ll announce all those results, and rinse and repeat for the 00s and 10s.
Looking forward to the next phase! (if I survive )
Next Update!
After a lot of faffing around, I finally completed the 00s scrutineering. There were, uh, a few illegal entries and quite a lot of penalty points going around. Those of you that have legal entries with 0 points, you can be fairly confident your car will be driven. As for the rest, well, I have some tallying up to do.
I hope to get the 10s done over the weekend and then some final decisions announced, because after that, I’m going to have a baby in my arms so the driving stage will probably proceed at a similarly slow pace, but at least the exports will be safe from the upcoming update rolling over from Beta!
Edit: further to my previous post, the tally for the 00s so far:
- Total entries: 12 (not including my “real car” benchmark)
- Total illegal entries: 2
- Entries with penalty points: 4
- Entries that are both illegal and have penalty points: 1
As I am entering 8 cars into each category, I also need to look at the data and figure out what the greater collective sin is. Given the focus is mostly on tyre vs power and weight distribution dynamics, most likely things like too much/little power, too much tyre, and too much downforce will be the biggest things to watch out for. Buggy things like the brake fade changing from 0 to 0.1% when exporting should matter less if the brakes are sufficiently ventilated. In some circumstances if someone’s made a particularly idiosyncratic high budget choice which has no meaningful impact on performance, that mightn’t be too much of an issue either. Stay tuned for decision making!
Meanwhile I’ll press on and knock out the 10s category now.
Nothing like impending fatherhood to motivate me to finish the initial stages of this project!
All of the entries have now been examined. I shall present the raw data for checking shortly. Open disclosure: in the process of checking, some of the entries have presented to me ways in which the rules have been a bit redundant or unfair if applied by the letter (for example, why is 1 wing/spoiler and 2 lips allowed, but not 3 lips, when wings and spoilers are far more effective as a Automation fixture than lips). In other cases there are bugs (0 brake fade somehow becoming 0.1% brake fade on export). For these matters there have been workarounds. Some of the entries fell afoul of porting from one challenge to another and were simply too illegal to be rectified for this challenge.
First up, here is the data from the 90s entry, the biggest roster.

Curiously, nobody used a turbo in the car, which is a slight shame because turbo power was a real sporting boom in the 90s.
As you can see there is 1 irredeemably illegal entry leaving a field of 12. 3 of them have 20 or more penalty points due to a combination of wheelbase, tyre width, power, and blowing the budget by a significant margin. All of these factors are significant and so it is reasonable these entries are dropped from this segment.
This leaves 9 entries where 8 shall go through. As I mentioned before, the decision will rest on the performance data points. Conan’s penalty points were purely for a wheelbase 2cm short which is nothing and everything else is in order so that’s safe. Riley’s entry has a significant issue of a short wheelbase which does affect the handling. However Happyhungryhippo’s entry has a low power to weight ratio and has relatively narrow tyres for the weight.
To illustrate I’ll paste the relevant transposed data as an image:
What’s immediately striking is that Riley’s entry and Hippo’s entry are vastly different but end up yielding very similar times (as per the Automation driver, which we’ve clearly demonstrated in the past is not the same as actually driving the car in Beam). Riley’s car is in fact the least powerful in the segment, whereas Hippos is one of the heaviest, plus the tyres are narrower. I suspect the real difference in the Automation times is a combination of raw power and the supposed drive/sport ratio. One contributing factor would be because Riley’s car is on narrower tyres and it’s a square, not staggered setup.
Ultimately, while the wheelbase is a bit too small, I am quite lacking in entries on the lighter side which were more prevalent in the 90s and overall, Riley’s entry remains a closer match to the original spec of this challenge (sport coupes, but performance sedans were allowed). It makes the data points just that bit more even compared to the Primus Merit C320s, therefore for the 90s the final spot shall go to the Zephorus RS20C.
This means the cars that will be driven in Beam for the 90s are:

As you can see, 2 of the entries are illegal. Ch_Flash put in too many spoilers and that resulted in the car having significantly too much downforce to be fair for this challenge. Hippo was simply unlucky with that brake fade bug, which I would have overlooked if not for the penalty points most of which were due to submitting a car with an entirely too long wheelbase which implies a class of vehicle which is outside the scope of this challenge, so that too, is out.
Then there were 2 other entries with more than 10 penalty points: Xepy’s Tristella Oscen, which has rear tyres significantly wider than the weight-regulated maximum for this challenge, which does have a very large impact on performance parity so sadly I’m going to have to drop that one, and Conan’s Mitsushita, which I think he somehow forgot to check the engine ET which would explain why it has such a crazy specific output for a naturally aspirated 2L i4 that normally you’d have to get the engine rebuilt at Spoon or something to get that much power. So, I think fair to say I have to drop that one too.
This does leave us with the 8 entries on the dot. In terms of the data:
All of these cars got a bit heavy didn’t they. Well, it is what it is, and as far as I’m concerned the 00s weren’t exactly a golden era for the light sports car segment. This said, your Beam entries for this decade are:

As you can see, donutsnail forgot to check the Engine tech pool when porting from another challenge and broke the record for penalty points, gold star effort
As for the rest we have 9 legal entries. Open disclosure: when I originally checked Riley’s entry, due to a misunderstanding it had 2 spoilers and 1 lip as opposed to 1 spoiler and 2 lips. The entry was therefore ruled illegal as it was also achieving more downforce than would be reasonably achieved with legal fixtures (as was the rules intention). Having reviewed the other entries, I then took the liberty of switching a spoiler for a lip which resulted in lower downforce, and even though I as the host reserve the right to make executive decisions, I’m conflicted.
The 10s segment was relatively light on entries and this is causing me to seek compromise. Looking at the other entries, the penalty points are for tyre width and are quite significant. Riley’s entry has the significant other issue of downforce, but this is a lot more easily rectified and has lower impact for a tyre test, especially on 2 of the 3 tracks, compared to having overly wide tyres.
Once again let’s take a look at the data:
One thing is immediately striking: Xepy’s Lunascura Agheel S has been min-maxed to hell. It’s not all the tyres either, but it has oodles of power, the camber is quite high for what it is, and it pulls some mad g and on the Automation track sims it’s a clear outlier. This in itself isn’t a huge problem (making the tyres legal width only adds under 1 second to the total time). But the bigger problem is that it’s been quite heavily optimised to just squeeze right into the budget. Going back to figure out what the hell Xepy did, and I came across a curious feature: an electronically limited speed of 250km/h.
That’s gonna get in the way of the Bathurst test!
On the other hand, while I’ve taken a fairly extreme rules liberty with Riley’s Zephorus KS ZRD, it is more or less a perfectly realistically representation of the 2020 sport mobile: heavy and powerful. From a statistical point of view, Xepy’s is too much of an outlier. Very clever. But a bit too clever for this challenge. I still want to drive it, but maybe I’ll just do that separately and for my own enjoyment.
It’s worth saying that I also checked the other entries with high penalty points (mart1n2005’s and tsundere-kun’s) and there were no other such shenanigans so they should be alright.
Therefore, the entrants for the 10s are:
Username | Model Name |
---|---|
abg7 | TSC Tigereye 3.5S |
AndiD | Mara Paragon 2.3 SE42 |
HowlerAutomotive | Elmsley Sundance 3600 Super |

Ludvig | Swanson 337SC |
mart1n2005 | BSC 4000 by Carrosserie Marin |
Riley | Zephorus KS ZRD |
Tsundere-kun | Calcote L250 |
I am definitely not going to be getting to the driving part, but I’ll get all the exporting done presently and try and get my own reference entries completed (2 of them are done, just need to do the last one…)
EDIT: Putting together all of the entries that passed, sorted by year ascending:
You can see a pretty alright spread here, with a few fun outliers (like the Howler Wraith H which looks like a total grenade with the pin pulled out). Otherwise I feel there’s a decent representation going on here. Let’s see how it plays out in Beam.
Great to see all three of my entries qualify for the next stage with no penalty points - and with highly competitive (and in the case of my 2000s entry, class-leading) times in Automation to boot. This bodes well for the Beam testing to come later, but as they say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
This is a bit odd to me, especially considering that some of my favorite FR driver’s cars of the 1990s (FD RX-7, A80 Supra Turbo, Z32 300ZX, 968 Turbo S, Lotus Carlton, and Alpina B10 Bi-Turbo, among others) were turbocharged.
In fact, my submission for the 2000s was the second heaviest car (but on the other hand, the fastest in Automation testing) from that era to actually qualify for Beam testing.
The two oldest entries from me subscribed to that school of thought (by the standards of their respective eras), but the third one, not so much - in fact, it’s the lightest and least powerful of my three entries.
What I did with the '95 Thunderwolf after the deadline
As for the '95 Thunderwolf, I also cloned the original trim (or even the whole car) for use in a few other challenges - once each for PAIN, TTTT, and AGC30.
Last but not least, here’s what its interior (which I only added after the deadline for FM4 had passed) looks like:
And here are all three major variants of the '95 Thunderwolf together, from left to right: the TTTT version, the base car (from which the PAIN version was cloned - it’s now aesthetically identical, but retains both the stock FM4-friendly engine and the original chassis material of corrosion-resistant steel instead of glued aluminum), and the AGC30 version.
If the base Thunderwolf is the equivalent of a Standard class car in Ridge Racer V, then the TTTT trim would be akin to an Extra class version (faster and lighter), and the AGC30 trim would be reminiscent of an Oval class version (extreme top speed and acceleration, but with far more challenging handling).
I’ve now finished exporting all the entry cars to Beam. I won’t have time to edit them to match the weight distribution or mass before the baby arrives, so that’ll be on the backburner but at least the exports are done so future Automation updates won’t break them.
This said, I do have one rather large favour to ask. As I mentioned previously I’ve made replicas of some real life models, and seeing as I have a bias towards JDM for the 90s, my replicas were of a Mazda FD RX-7 Spirit R (with a turbo I3 that just about matches outputs), for the 00s a Honda S2000 AP1 with the JDM engine. For the 10s it was supposed to be a Toyota GR (A90) Supra RZ, but, uh, I’ve been particularly unmotivated to attempt styling
Would anybody be available to cobble together something? I note that the wheelbase of the A90 Supra is relatively short, at 2.47m and track width of around 1.59m. The rear tyres are 275mm wide (which is well within spec for this challenge given a kerb weight of 1530kg), and the engine bay just has to fit a turbo 3L inline 6. Interior doesn’t have to be anywhere near schmick, and if the styling is down pat I can work the mechanicals out pretty easily.
Looks like I may have gone about 2-3 seconds too slow with the Elmsley. I was hoping to challenge the lower half or thereabouts of the 2010 lineup with a budget shocker. I guess I’m alright with it being the slowest, so long as it puts up a fight. Big win if it surprises anyone on the track.
Surprising strop with excess turn-in + the back end flying off into the sunset is half a point. Just think of all the money you saved.
The Silhouette is a bit of a chonker, but ought to have the torque and grip to make up for it. Perhaps the easiest one of my entries to slot into reality.
The Howler… In testing, it was ~5 seconds faster around the BeamNG ATT with a few cm added to rear tire width. However, this version was more fun to tussle with. Fast, loud and dramatic. No doubt my own favourite.
A recent PC implosion leaves me poorly placed to offer assistance on the Supra. I still need to tear it open and swap some bits before I can call it done. I’m sure there are people around with more design prowess than myself, so might be for the best.
i have some documentation on the supra open right now and ive managed to get very close to the real life specs in game, just the styling bit really. Not quite sure how to get the body super close
it’s kinda rough getting the same style as the supra but i’ve got a fair bit of the engineering to be the same following this document gr supra pdf

All the rules should be followed to, i have been checking along
