Quite an unfortunate fate, shame they didn’t make it to 100.
I love the Falcon and have always wished they would make an xr6 and xr8 Mondeo, sad to see an Aussie legend die
It’s nice to see the last one was an XR car though
And it was a NA 6. Its a damn shame and the government has alot to answer to. Let me just say that the last xr8 sprint really is the best of all time and I love mine
Oh, is that not an XR6?
Yeah its the xr6 which was bassically a standard NA inline 6 falcon with a bodykit better interior and stereo. Then you had the xr6turbo and the supercharged xr8. Then there was the xr6 and xr8 sprint (which I have and love) long live the falcon. Long live Ford.
oh and a xr8 mondeo would be amazing…if rwd
Well the xr6 turbo is the one I love
Although know and ford they would scoff at the idea of a V8 Mondeo
I’m especially torn up with this news, mainly because I was employed by a Ford Dealership and lost my job through the downturn in sales in a mid-year slump closely tied to the “Ford is leaving Australia” announcement.
The dealership went from processing/selling 4-5 cars a day to 1 within a week and a lot of mechanics were told to stay at home for a week or two because the dealership couldn’t afford the wages, so myself, as a minimum wage workshop assistant was given the flick pretty quickly.
Which was a great shame but at the same time I got to inspect and ride in the last Aussie built cars from Ford, we had a few Supercharged Falcon Sprints sold to various people and it was quite saddening doing inspection on a new XR8 and being told to leave all the stickers and paperwork on and in the car so the owner could keep it as new as possible.
Many of those Falcons were being mothballed straight away, which of course means that they won’t be worth anything in 20 years or so because there are so many being preserved today, I so wanted to tell some of the buyers just to have fun with their car.
I also worked on some Mustangs, which are quite awful in comparison to the XR8 in terms of build quality, talking to an ex-Ford employee in the US it seems that all the “low” quality stangs were being sent to Aus. And then I saw a Mondeo which puts the US and AU to shame in terms of everything except top speed.
And finally we began to import the Focus RS, which is a rocketship on wheels, sadly both RS’s we sold were on ebay before the owners had even taken delivery of them, but such is life.
So yeah, a bit of a read but also showing that it’s not just the factory guys who lost their jobs but it’s trickling down to everyone, it doesn’t make for a happy workplace when you’re standing next to the last Falcon delivered to the dealership while you’re in near empty workshop.
Well mate my thouggts and prayers are with u and ur family atm. What dealership? I have one of the first xr8 sprints released and i have already intercooled it and tuned and it has seen willowbank and qld raceway so not all of us will mothball em
edit i still think the last few years the mondeo has come a long way and honestly i think is the best.looking new car in the world
Used to work at Eclipse Ford in Ballarat Victoria.
You don’t have to go putting me in your thoughts and prayers, I landed on my feet with a farm job that pays twice the wage than the dealership.
Also, good on you for having fun with your Falcon.
