Forum-Critque-Thread

If anything, technically it’s faster. Consider the process for a moment.

Going from the end to the beginning, then back to the end, assuming a final-page start.

Old style: Press Home, click Page One, wait to load. Click Last Page, wait to load, press End.

New style: Press Home, wait for the load. Press End, wait for the load. Two whole clicks saved.

Personally, I’m enjoying this now that I’m used to it. Much easier to read a whole thread in one go now, rather than doing the whole “Read 15 posts, change page” thing from most forums.

(Am I the only one who used to take advantage of user-configurable post-count-per-page limits? Used to set some really stupid posts-per-page numbers, like 60 posts per page, on forums that’d let me.)

I do too, but on a forum which can get very image heavy like this I sometimes prefer to keep it small. My connection is good but not that good

Also I have no idea why my browser started displaying 15 instead of 10. I didn’t touch the settings!

Everyone’s Did. (At least I know mine did…)

I think the problem ulukay mentioned is a different one.

Its the loading. if you are at the Top and go to the bottom it loads - well okay. It has to.
But if you go back to the top by pressing home it loads again, which frankly is non-sense if you have a linear, continuous system.
Both segments were loaded already, why does it have to reload yet again?

You harvest what you seed (so they say here) - treat everyone with respect and be friendly and you’ll rarely get a negative line back. And if you get negative feedback, don’t go down to the same level and be negative to that person.

Aha I see now. Why can’t the posts that were already loaded remain loaded?

I have to say, searching through Facebook conversations yields a similar problem. Once you load a new segment while searching, even going back to the end, you have to reload the earlier bits again. That is a PITA.

This has probably been brought up already, but the system of continuous scrolling makes it terrible for reading long threads(especially ones with lots of pictures when you are on a weaker computer) and I much preferred the page system, another thing I’m not too fond of is the circular avatars as the original images are almost always square and making the avatars circular covers parts of the image and about half of my screen is just empty space and I don’t even have that wide of a monitor.

This has probably been the number one contentious issue in the second half of this thread. It’s been quite well covered, and we concluded the bottom line was, as you said, some people “just preferred” the page system because it’s the familiar one. But you’ll soon realise that it makes virtually no difference, given that loading a set of 10 or so posts on a crappy connection is bothersome regardless of whether you’re doing it by clicking on a page, or scrolling through a thread. It’s just that you’re used to the former.

Once you learn how to use the forum’s post search function (it’s easier, actually easier than the page system), your experience will improve considerably… but only insofar as your crappy system allows.

I noticed that on the front page, the list of the last posts puts a priority on the pinned threads, meaning that most subforums only show pinned threads in the list and not the threads that are actually active.

Is there a way to make it so it shows the last posts no matter if it’s pinned or not?

Edit: Just noticed I can unpin them for myself, so they end up listed like normal threads, but the issue is that I would personally like those threads to still be at the top of the list when I go to the subforum they have been posted in, but that they don’t show up on the main page of the forums when there are newer posts that have been made.

I think you should redirect the old forum URL here and move the archived forum into a new one because it’s not obvious we moved and that gets all the stragglers in one go.

The so-called stragglers are most likely to have noticed that forum activity there has completely dropped off, we’ve been in new forum for like a week now.

Moving the entire archived old forum to a new domain seems like a giant (and unnecessary) hassle, depending on exactly what you mean.

Honestly the new forum looks better on the mobile devices than on the PC :stuck_out_tongue:

I know! There’s a lot of plain blocks of colour. It makes everything look a little… sickly.

Is it possible to have a textured background? Nothing too outlandish of course. It’s just that even this level of differentiation between background and post is not quite enough…

Than the home screen would also get textured and therefore harder to read.

Hmm good point.

The art whore in me wants to play around with my own background image but that’d be unreasonable :stuck_out_tongue:

I wouldn’t be a fan of a textured background to be honest, I think it would be too cluttered (Not an artist, my ex is, so I know first hand how little I know)

These latest alterations, with the engine in he background Made the forums nicer, however, they are now very crashy on my tablet, it’s a matter of scrolling 5 posts and chrome crashes.

Weird, :unamused:

I have only done a few CSS tweaks, and moved the Home | Wiki etc menu to above the header. Hasn’t been any actual forum update/code changes, plugin changes since last week.

This kind of chrome crash usually happens when the device ran out of RAM, and that assumption is right if you consider that it happens more on image heavy threads, like the guess what car one. However that also happened on threads with no images.

Could it be the background image or something?

The background image is 84.2kb.

Right, that isn’t it then.
