Good Cars Gone Bad - IT'S DONE

AWD, even. Right on the V6 front, but it still had hard tires, which seriously impacted its capacity as a low-price entry here. Ultimately knocked it down in the running, since otherwise its bang-for-buck would’ve gotten it further

I love this. Count me in.

WELL THIS IS AWKWARD

So now two of the top contenders are banned users. One of whom, still weird circumstances, not sure. The other… yikes. Not even gonna go there, man. Not gonna touch it.

Now what? I don’t know. Challenge idea was kinda flawed, and I don’t know how to handle this situation. Do I just disqualify one? That would mean I have to disqualify the other and leaves a victory by default, which is disingenuous as hell and I don’t like it. On the other hand, I don’t feel like reviewing one of the cars anymore after the reasoning behind the ban of that user… even if the car was a damn good one, which makes it a bit of a shame.

Eh, maybe it’s easier to choose between two instead of three. Means one less review I have to write…

I’ll get these done before I finally make the jump to Al Rilma. Expect a new challenge once I get the ropes of that version… a challenge that won’t take so damn long to finish and will have actually good rules among other things. Trust.

If I had a nickel for each time a finalist in my first challenge got banned before I finished it,
I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

Review the cars, not their makers.

This, I’d go through with it anyway.

Fair enough. At least I already wrote the stuff

finally

These next cars are truly the best of the bunch here. Jessica has narrowed it down to these three, based on everything she’s heard and read, as her best options going forward.

Each offers a very unique experience to the others: a slick Spanish sedan, a fiery Dalluhan wagon, and the initially surprising inclusion of a crossover — despite her initial plans, this one is just too good not to consider.

Korrodiert OS-A45 - (user missing)

The Korrodiert is an unusual thing in this lineup. It’s a lot of car — more than Jessica’s Trekkr, dwarfing the smaller crossover — and that does hamper it a little. It’s a surprisingly athletic thing, making one almost call it a Sport Utility Vehicle proper… though it’s probably not very fond of anything more than gravel roads. It’s great on cargo, features a very appealing price, and is easy enough on the wallet long-term… but it’s not the easiest to drive of its top-rank competition, and again, it’s just a lot of car. Jessica really doesn’t need all of that right now.

It drove well enough on the test drive. A bit heavy, with plenty of body roll in the corners, as one would expect from such a car. It’s nothing to write home about, though the engine does sound pretty good, at least.

Maybe she’ll check back in a few years if she’s considering a family, but for right now, it’s just a bit much, even with that price point.

Norðwagen Fenrir GTS-12 - @moroza

With a name Jessica initially couldn’t figure out how to pronounce, Norðwagen’s mighty Fenrir shocked and awed from the start. Stand-out styling for sure! And what performance… though, at a cost. See, the Fenrir’s insane performance is from supercar-like equipment. Absurdly wide — and expensive — tires are what grip the road so well, and a manual transmission is what gets things moving so fast through all four wheels… or two, based on the drive selector. Also, in lieu of a typical rear bench, there’s just a pair of seats… sure, that’s all the use they tend to see anyway, and cargo can just go in the massive rear spot instead, but it still felt limiting to her when seeing it at the dealer. She’s also really not confident in handling a manual car in her traffic-filled commute… the beater of a Weldon she had before the Trekkr was a hassle enough in drive-thrus. Though that might’ve been the beater part rather than the manual…

Opening it up on the clearer highway showed that yes, it does indeed drive like a supercar. This is a real driver’s car… but she’s not really looking for that. Is she? Is that luxury itself? Hmm. It’s not strictly as comfortable, and a car you have to learn and focus on isn’t as effortless as she’d want…

Either way, this is one she’s conflicted on. And in this lineup, conflicted opinions are won over by things that are more definite.

VOLARO Verleden ZLR V12 - @DoesStuff

At last, the stunning European sedan comes forth. This stunned with visuals and backed it up with performance — though that transmission’s fuel economy leaves some to be desired for sure. Maybe she’ll see if they offer different specs… or just take the car and run with it. It’s very comfortable, very easy to drive, yet still very performant and reasonably practical for a sedan. While not quite as high-brow of a name as the Fenrir and not as bulletproof, it’s still a very appealing proposition for a fairly similar price… but without some of the supercar-like pricing on keeping it running. At least, on the tires. It’s still a very pricey proposition in the long-term, but it’s an easier pill to swallow with the more strongly preferred automatic. And with the sheer amount of aluminum in the body and chassis, it’s basically impossible to lose it to rust… a big advantage over her past cars. That old Weldon beater had more carpet than metal on the floor by the time the engine blew up and sealed its fate as a pick-and-pull showcase, and the Trekkr’s fenders are starting to show a few small signs of its age.

The test drive further proved just how good of an offering the Verleden could be. Showing up the Fenrir’s performance with a specially tuned transmission, a similarly delightful sounding engine… but also a great sound system, one that makes any song sound a bit better. Something she can more easily appreciate here, in such an effortless car to drive. Fast, sleek, and easy… this has to be the one. Hopefully the dealership offers a maintenance program to make it a bit cheaper to service… but that comes during negotiation. It’ll be fine, right?

Soon enough, papers were signed, and the Trekkr was deemed a worthy enough trade-in to shave some of the upfront cost off…

And Jessica drove back home in a shiny new VOLARO.

Commentary — Huh.

So that was a super ambitious concept for my first challenge. There is no way that was ever gonna work. Will I revisit this concept for Al Rilma? Oh, definitely, given the new mean time to failure system makes estimating wear over time a lot easier, and I have new ideas for how to implement that. GCGB may very well return for a new iteration… but that’s down the line.

I’ll probably host something far simpler first. I’d especially like to showcase my new diesel ruleset, adjusted for the new version, once I finish tweaking it some more. Maybe I’ll even make a poll for it or something depending on the response to this.

Oh, right the pings.

@moroza @DoesStuff
actually I’m too lazy to type the rest of the pings and one of these users doesn’t even exist anymore

Anyways, fun concept, I failed to deliver, oh well. Lots learned for next time. Cheers, folks!

wow that took way too long
