GTM1 - Sport Sedan Shoot Out [Judging]

Legacy bodies are not allowed.

It is def gonna be on open beta.

The magazine is called GT, the challenge is about sports sedans. Sorry I realize its confusing.

Is it okay to submit something technically feasible for the era, but from a tuner house (such as SLP, Lingenfelter, etc)? I definitely don’t want to be stuck with the “factory stock” cast headers and tiny cams that my car would normally have, not in a challenge where people are gonna go ham a whole bunch

I will note that as long as the factory car is cheaper to match the lacking performance, it’s just as good as a contender as any.
That being said I am absolutely fine with the car being from a 3rd party “tuner”, BUT it should be closer to full car like an Alpina or RUF than just a demo car for some shop.

so what demographic should we be aiming for ? family sports ?

Yeah thats prob the best match

Would a liftback be allowed? While yeah they are classified as hatchbacks I think I wanna be bri’ish, so for that a liftback akin to the Ford Sierra or the Rover SD1 would be pretty superb

Edit: I do realise it goes out of the scope of the challenge, however both cars have raced as saloons, or been bunched up with them in racing or just in being called sports “sedans”. They’re family cars through and through that have been juiced up, so people just put them together

Yeah I’m open to it. I was considering having wagons allowed too, and if thats something peeps want I’ll allow em.

EDIT: I should clarify, it would have to be like the 5 door sierra, not the 3 door. It’s 4 doors minimum.

Since the trim year is 1991 am I to assume the car bodies that become available in the late 80s for engineering but are called like “90s_stuff_sedan” and are meant for cars released in the early to mid 90s are off limits for this challenge?

There are no body restrictions technically, but it’ll certainly be easier to stick to the look with an 80s body.
Just keep an eye on the inspo (and other early 90s sedans). The most modern looking sedan of the time was probably the skyline, but Cadillac was still making 70s lookin land yachts at the time.

Just some pics of a boring early 90s US fullsize I made

It’s not related to the challenge… probably

I must object to the 10k target price cut. I was designing my compact sedan with about an 8-10k margin to start with, and now it’s technically “expensive” by challenge standards.

Agreed, same with my car. Perhaps if you have to lower it then.. 30k?

Far less of an issue but.. US License plates? Kind of chucked UK plates on mine and you say “should have”, not “must have”, Implying it may not be a bin for it?

The plate thing is just for consistency when cars are in pics together, I would honestly prefer to do UK plates but I figured more peeps default to US ones.

I’ll make it 30k.
Ultimatly prices will only be judged relative to each other.

Final rules are in place. Some notable changes:
US license plate requirement
No legacy bodies
Must use radial tires ending in 5.
Unleaded 91 or 95 fuel only.
Suggested budget lowered to $30k (this is not a hard limit)

Just to clarify so my car and potentially others don’t get binned, Do the cars have to conform to US Regulations aswell? Like third-brake lights, side markers and being LHD?

Since my car currently has None of those.

Is an interior even required?

Us plates ….really …ughh

No. having some sort of place holder in there is nice but thats just for the sake of photos. Will not be judged

I am getting mixed signals here so I’ll do a ver quick poll to settle it

  • US plates and road compliance
  • UK plates and road compliance
