IDC01 - Muscling My Way

Hello all! And welcome to the inauguration of the first Interior Design Challenge thread. Here we are giving the often ignored interiors of our Automation cars some well deserved attention, and hopefully offer a platform to allow the skill of interior crafting to be cultivated in friendly competition.

THE BRIEF

Ascot Automotive have developed a new model for sale within Gasmea; a pure blooded, high octane, fire breathing ‘supercar’ as it were. But their is just one issue…

…they forgot to give people who buy it somewhere to sit and enjoy their pride and joy.

This is where you come in. Yes you, gawking at this magnificent piece of engineering. Your job is to fit this car with the very best interior (and within reason and budget) to secure the rights to be known as the person who had a hand at creating a cult classic and totally well respected car for generations to come… or to be cursed at whenever anything needs to be replaced.

Hopefully fairly straight forward. You are making the interior for this Gasmean (see: American/Australian) 1968 V8 Coupe. The car file for the donor car will be at the bottom of the post.

THE RULES

Keep some thoughts on what was happening in cars around this time and from the countries these sorts of cars came from. There will be a handful of inspirational photos attached but if you wish to take inspirations from elsewhere then you are welcome to.

Advanced Trim Options

Apart from the Chassis Tunnel Size, all of these options are off limit, if any of these values change from the donor car that will be a binned entry. You have been warned. Edit: just on this specific page, minus the opacity of the windows. Any changing of the chassis to the basic or making it completely invisible is allowed. My mistake.

Interior Choices

These are the options chosen for the donor car, if any of these are changed, you will also have a binned entry.

The Donor Car

Any changes to the donor car’s fixtures that are not to the interior are prohibited. On my end I have locked all the exterior fixtures but if they end up being unlocked for you I would suggest locking them before beginning to make sure no accidental changes are made.

Also, the choice of body is not to be changed nor will any morphs be touched. And please make sure to change the (insert forum name) to, surprise surprise, your forum name. Hopefully shouldn’t be needed to be said but just in case, there it is.

As for exterior colour, I would like to keep it simple and leave it as is but I won’t forbid changing it if you so choose to.

JUDGING

How it looks, how it fits with the car and how era appropriate it is. That’s kinda it…

This is all personally subjective but I will try my best to explain why I think what I think. I will also try to look for details that make or break the interior as well but it may be harder for that. The main thing I am wanting is that people pay attention to the build and make choices that line up with what exists already.

If you give this full size bench seats, an auto shifter, or other options that don’t make sense with what the car has, it is likely to be binned also so don’t be afraid to give the car a once over and take your time before submitting. There are no bonuses for submitting earlier than everyone else.

As of now, I do not have any interior design language for Ascot Automotive, so don’t feel as though you need a strict guideline to adhere to, but that may change for future iterations of the comp.

DEADLINE

I will give a week for some discussion about the ideas behind the rules and general flow of this comp. Hopefully once things are finalised we can have another week before submissions close. During the whole time people are encouraged to start working on the cars as soon as this thread is created.

For now, I will set the deadline for discussion to end on Tuesday, the 6th of June at 11:59pm UTC. Here is a site with UTC if anyone wants a reference. After that if no changes are approved, the final deadline for this challenge will be Tuesday, the 13th of June at 11:59pm UTC.

INSPIRATIONS

Hopefully this gets the general vibe across. Remember, if you choose to take inspiration elsewhere don’t hesitate to. This is just a small slice of possible ideas for this comp.

CAR FILE

Here is the associated car file:
IDC01_-(insert_forum_name)-_Ascot_Bombardier_385S.car|attachment (44.9 KB)

Submission will be via PMs on this site only. Make sure you have finalised the entry before submitting, don’t be like me and constantly tweak and pick at the car after the fact. I will not be taking resubmissions so make it count. Again, I will not be taking resubmissions Edit: Also, posting responses ‘advertising’ your interiors is encouraged.

And, of course, have fun and don’t die.

I don’t know how other people find it, but the stock chassis the game makes can have some awful shapes and massive wheel wells in it.

When building an interior, the first thing I do now is hide the chassis, and even the underbody at times to create new wheel wells.

Obviously this would be against the current rules on advanced trim. I’m not sure if there is some discussion to be had?

Since creating the floor, wheel wells and firewall is all part of the interior that could be part of the challenge perhaps?

Edit

I would happily send you a couple of cars I have made to show how the chassis doesn’t play nicely with the interiors

whoops

My aim was the modifying of the position of the firewall and where the axles land were forbidden. The making of the chassis itself basic or even invisible is allowed, as is the alteration of the opacity of the windows. I will correct that in the main post.

Brilliant! That makes sense now, no moving of the wheels in the wells.

In that case you can count on my entry.

The Bombardier’s engineering options should also be left as-is, but I think cloning the car and its engine simultaneously (as for ARM) would be the best option for creating a submission.

If people wish to clone it to make an entry they may. I will keep an original copy to check against for any of the binnable points.

IMO, chassis width and height changes for interior clearance reasons, along with wheel offset and ride height just enough to compensate for the former, should be allowed. Invisible chassis is a cleaner solution, but I can see why someone would prefer a more complete model of the whole vehicle.

My main reasoning for having those options off limits for this comp was to try and make things simpler for anyone that wants to jump in and try out practicing making interiors. If they had complete free reign they may feel overwhelmed where as having some restrictions means that they can focus more on making the interior within the confides of the car. But allowing the chassis to be made basic or invisible allows more seasoned members to work on the car without feeling unnecessarily hampered. I am hoping this is an understandable stance.

Sure, makes sense to keep things simpler for both host and entrants, especially the first round.

Unless anyone has any other things to discuss about the rules, shall we open up submissions until the 13th of June, 11:59pm UTC? Or shall we wait until the 6th?

Are you expecting an interior typical for a regular muscle car, or would making an upmarket/luxury version be ok? I tend towards opulent bling, but can tone it down if we’d rather it not look like a Bentley competitor.

As this is planned to be the most powerful trim level for the car, the claim of it being the most opulent and suave is to be aimed for, but not trying to make it compete with companies like Bentley or Rolls Royce. Think the top trims of the most powerful muscle cars and even getting into ‘personal luxury’ niche. Think like your Plymouth Hemi Cudas or your Mercury Cougars.

Do you care about interior fixtures protruding into the engine bay or under the car?

If it happens, it happens, but if it can be avoided it would be preferred.

Relocating the fuel tank like this would…

  • make the trunk a lot deeper and/or a more usable shape
  • improve cabin noise reduction
  • improve safety
  • marginally improve moment of inertia in yaw
  • marginally worsen front/rear weight distribution and center of gravity
  • exclude folding rear seats
    = ?

Are windows and window pillars, including sunroofs, considered exterior and thus off-limits?

For this first challenge I will say that they are excluded, but if you happen to win this one and host the next one you may choose that it isn’t

Speaking of, entries for the first Interior Design Challenge are now officially open! You have until Tuesday the 13th of June, 11:59 UTC

i request a deadline extension. my hands aren’t working well lately and there’s a lot on my plate.

Considering I have one entry post here and no PMs of submission thus far, I am happy to alter the deadline if it can/will encourage additional submissions. However there is the question of by how much.

  • Extend Current Deadline 1 Week: 20th of June, 11:59pm UTC
  • Extend Current Deadline 2 Weeks: 27th of June, 11:59pm UTC
  • Extend Current Deadline: User Suggested

I would like anyone and everyone who is interested in trying this challenge to answer the following poll, as I am wanting to make sure it doesn’t feel like this challenge is going to drag on and potentially die because of lack of interest.

Apologies for a delayed response, life… uh, gets in the way.

As to the poll results, I am opting to extend the deadline for the IDC01 to the 27th of June, at 11:59pm UTC. Hopefully this will provide ample time for any potential entries to be finished up and submitted. I realise I may have expected too much for the original timeframe for this kind of more finicky work so hopefully this extra time will improve participation.
