KSAC3 - Modest wealth (Closed, results pending!)

1969
Somewhere in Europe

Long story short, it is the very end of the swinging sixties, and our client now has recieved a top position in a blooming company that makes mechanical calculators and typewriters. Boy, do the future look bright? One can only imagine where a company like this will be in 10-15 years, right?

So, naturally, our client also wants to trade up. We’re talking luxury class cars now. But don’t be silly. We’re not talking about someone that is going to be chaffeured around in something like a Bentley or a 600 Mercedes. Neither does he have any interest in a yankee land yacht. Nah, we’re talking a more modest and modern class of luxury cars now, that has the driver in focus as well as the passengers - since the owner will also be the driver in this case, it has to be rewarding for the person behind the wheel.

If it is still unclear what he is looking for, maybe the priorities and inspirations will help.

______________________________________________________________________________

PRIORITIES

:star::star::star::star::star:

COMFORT - This should be self-explainatory TBH. A car in this class just has to be comfortable.
PRESTIGE - Well. Another self-explainatory part I guess.
STYLING - It should look the part too, which serious successful bussinesman wants to drive around in something that people point and laugh at?

:star::star::star::star:

DRIVEABILITY - Effortless, relaxed driving is also something that adds to the comfort.
PERFORMANCE - While we are not looking into a 300 SEL 6.3-competitor, a car in this class is expected to have some oomph. However, I will go by what was seen as realistic in the 60s so there’s no meaning in over-exaggerating this bit.

:star::star::star:

SAFETY - An increasingly hot topic by the late 60s, and cars in this class were the first ones to introduce groundbreaking safety features.
RELIABILITY - Back when there still was a perception that money should buy quality, not only gadgets.

:star::star:

SPORTINESS - Cars in this class will maybe never be “sporty” per se, but some uplifting driving dynamics is never wrong for a luxury car that should also be a drivers car.
FUEL ECONOMY - Fuel in this era is still cheap, but it is not US cheap.
PURCHASE PRICE - Don’t sweat too much to use up the whole budget since our client is not looking for a cheap runabout. With that said, two identical cars but one of them being cheaper, we all know which one we would pick.
SERVICE COSTS - They aren’t going to be cheap in this class, just don’t go over the top.

:star:
INTERIOR STYLING - Interiors are not required, a nice one might give a small bonus though and a bad one will not lower the score compared to none at all.

RULES

Trim and variant year 1969. Model and family might be older.

Max 8 cylinders.

No “race” parts.

The engine should be able to pass at least WES2.

Super leaded fuel (regular leaded won’t give you an instabin but won’t give you any advantage either)

At least one muffler required.

Radials are allowed but not mandatory. Minimum tire profile 70. Max rim size 16”.

At least four full seats.

Four door sedan bodies only. In case the body is listed as a “4 door coupé” but is obviously a sedan when it comes to the shape, it is allowed. It’s just that liftbacks or wagons weren’t really a thing in this class, and we’re not looking for a coupé. No hard rules on wheelbase, but look up the inspirations, something too far off from them will be frowned upon. No convertibles.

Maximum combined techpool car + engine $20 millions. No negative techpool.

Maximum price $27000

ATS is allowed in moderation for stuff that can’t be done via engineering, if you’re unsure just ask.

I don’t have any engineering realism priority here, since there were actually lots of interesting technology being tried out in this class. With that said, I might still instabin anything that has silly choices like a 3 cylinder engine or chunky offroad tires.

No hard limits on quality, but keep it sane. Obvious minmaxing will be frowned upon.

INSPIRATIONS:

Mercedes 250S

BMW 2500

Jaguar XJ6

Opel Kapitän

Volvo 164

Ford Zodiac

Rover P5B

Fiat 130

Toyota Crown

Buick Skylark. I am throwing this oddball in, since if you really want to go american, this is probably where you should aim, a midsize from an upmarket brand. US cars still had a market in Europe by then, but Imperials and Cadillacs weren’t anything that was a realistic alternative to the other cars seen here.

A new KSAC, and with a Buick reference too?

My day has been made.

That premise reminds me of the one laid out for JOC7B, but a whole quarter-century earlier.

Since “Open Beta” is not a thing at the moment anymore, I removed all the references to that in the ruleset, just as a formal thing.

With no objections to the ruleset, the challenge is now open.

‘Larger Luxury for Less’

The chariot of choice for those on their way up in life who wanted.. just a bit more in everything, This was a car that really showed you’d made it further than most. With a capacious boot, Vinyl roof and pointed front-end, it was very much a style focused automobile, especially with the all important Wealth-Notifier [Trim Level] on the bootlid. [Partially] Hand-Built in Coventry by workers who will certainly not bring the company to its knees within the next decade..

**SPY REPORT —

MYSTERY POSEIDON SEDAN SPOTTED: IS “ORCA” ABOUT TO SURFACE?

Industry watchers were caught off guard this week after unofficial photographs emerged of what appears to be a previously unknown Poseidon Automotive prototype undergoing discreet road testing in regional New South Wales.

While Poseidon has made no public comment, multiple sources confirm the vehicle was observed entering and exiting a secured Poseidon facility under its own power — strongly suggesting a pre-production evaluation mule, not a styling mock-up.

WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR

The vehicle, heavily camouflaged and deliberately understated, departs significantly from Poseidon’s existing Turtle, Dolphin, and Thresher offerings.

Early observations indicate:

  • Significantly larger proportions than any current Poseidon sedan
  • Long wheelbase and wide track
  • Low roofline with formal, upright glasshouse
  • Broad rear quarters and restrained surfacing
  • Overall stance suggesting luxury rather than performance intent

Insiders describe the car as “deliberately anonymous”, yet unmistakably Poseidon in its proportions and mechanical sound.
POSEIDON REMAINS SILENT

True to form, Poseidon Automotive declined to comment when approached.

A company spokesperson offered only a brief response:

“Poseidon Automotive does not comment on test vehicles or internal development programs.”

“Oh, you have been promoted to executive level? Maybe I have to think twice on denying your dinner invitation, James!”

“What makes you think that, Debbie?”

There is one answer: THE PRIMUS IMPERATOR!

Think of a large luxury car, with generously spaced interior, a trunk suiting mafia duties and a V8 strong enough to pull the concrete blocks too to the crime scene…. eh, sorry, wrong campaign, we are not at the Italian market here after all.

Still, the Primus Imperator, the flagship of the brand, is not sparse on superlatives: V8, a modern styled luxury interior, smooth automatic and a handling making the car feel a bit smaller than it is. The sheep test results prove it: No flipping or spinning!

And if your boss doesn´t promote you on his floor level, entering the driver seat of the Imperator 450 at least feels like it! Believe it or not, the “Pistacchio Beige” shown here turned out to be very popular! Everything does make sense in the Imperator. The arrow-shaped taillights? The indicators point into the direction where you want to go - a nice gimmick! The engine fuel mixture and ignition timing can be adjusted by using a switch in the engine bay - important for businessmen travelling in countries without super gas available. The door handles look oversized? Well, have you tried opening a jammed door after an accident with those tiny handles that are still common? Primus Imperator handles can be applied considerable force on, using them as lever. Plus, your wife doesn´t ruin her expensive beautiful nails on properly sized ones.

PRIMUS. Die erste Wahl.

These cars are not a real product of any manufacturer, any likeness or other similarities to real brands is purely coincidence. Actual model may change in final submission. All stunts performed on a closed road with a professional driver.

1969 DURENDAL ADELAIDE

When Australia’s sports car manufacturer was purchased by Armor Motors, they were afforded much deeper pockets than they had before. Durendal was tasked with re-envisioning themselves as an upscale European car maker, using whatever pieces they could from their new parent company.

Armor’s first foray in the 4-door sedan market was the Adelaide. Even the base model was well-optioned, but the 4.0 GX (shown) came brimming with a powerful 4.0 liter V8, a luxurious interior, and custom tuned suspension to make the most out of the road.

Created for multiple markets, The Durendal Adelaide was engineered to easily accommodate left-hand and right-hand markets, with as many interchangeable parts as possible. Both front wipers swung from the inside outward. The radio’s antenna was mounted on the center of the roof to avoid obstructing the driver’s view from either side.

Performance was promising. 0-100 breezed by in 8.3 seconds. Top speed was over 210 kph. Durendal was determined to ruffle some feathers in the upscale sedaan market.
