Most powerful 393cc i4 possible

I would like to now what the maximum amount of HP is - that’s achievable with the smallest possible engine, the 393 CC i4. No further rules, so MTBF etc. isn’t important.

My try:

Who can beat me?

Think I might have a bash at this, gimme a bit and I’ll edit this up when I’m done.

Alright, here we are. There may be more in it, I stopped once I had ticked over 200hp. I must admit, I did enjoy watching max boost go off the scale in manual testing. 12000 RPM entirely unnecessary but I liked the screaming.

But…but…but how? I can only get 187HP… I guess I need to try harder

best I could manage

I could only get mine to 187 hp 115.7 ft-lb?

I agree!

Full boost at 8200 rpm is hilarious. Good job

Here is my 393cc baby monster.

I was only able to get 201 HP. Full boost is at 10,300 rpm though! haha

Octane is only 94.6? Or is it a case of if u up compression the thing explodes? haha

It’s not RON but AKI. 94.6 AKI are around 100 RON.

My bad! didnt notice. Thanks for clearing that up

Hi. New here. Sweet game, and after running half the scenarios, I liked this little challenge.

I managed to achieve 198 HP by slowly removing compression and adding timing , and saved the engine. I never failed an engine due to knock in the testing, just got the warning and reduced power.

When I open the saved engine file again (clicking ‘modify’), it immediately failed due to knock, and won’t run anymore on the same settings. I repeated this once by starting the tuning over and making a new save file; that saved engine won’t run either. So, there seems to be a difference in the knock detection sensitivity in the live sandbox vs. files opened from the library. It’s as if you can creep up on a compression/advance combination in tuning which exceeds the normal design limits.

Has anybody else run into this glitch? Is there anyplace particular where I should post what I found?

Are you running B1322 when this happens?

I havent run into that specific glitch, but i have had problems opening an engine and, after a couple of tests it will perform significantly differently, which could very well be related to your problem. I haven’t reported it yet because i couldn’t say for sure if it was caused by the engine being saved on a different build to the one i’m on when the bug happens

That problem should be fixed in B1322, that’s why I’m asking.

If engines saved during a different build performing significantly differently after a couple of tests is the bug you are looking to fix I still have it in build 1322.

In the spinning faster tutorial scenario my engine gets ~172bhp on the first couple of tests, then drops down to ~162bhp after that, even if you change the settings back to where they were. It seems to happen one test after there is either a score improvement or after the compression is changed (not sure which is the relevant change). I cant remember what build the engine was originally created in but it would be one of the three different builds that were released in the latest major update.

I believe this is the save file for the engine if you want it:
Tutorial4.lua (38.7 KB)

Increasing the compression and then changing the ignition timing should recreate the problem

Reduce that exhaust size down to about 2.50" and I’ll bet you did beat him. Too big of an exhaust seems to lower HP (if you’re not outputting that amount of power).

I am running Launcher version 49, Game Build 1198. That’s the version to which it last auto updated.

EDIT: Searched and found B1323, downloading and will try to reproduce the issue on that. Thanks.

2nd Edit: OK, I can 99% confidently confirm that my issue will not repeat in B1323. I only managed 196 HP this time, so my parameters must be slightly different, but still on the very edge of knock. And the saved file runs the same. That’s a fix I can really appreciate. Thanks for the slightly off topic help.

Back on topic:
Hitting a peak power in this challenge seems realistically complex, I like that. For example, I optimized the A/R ratio, then compression and timing. When I went back and rechecked the A/R ratio, the ideal setting had changed by 3 clicks. Still within one HP, I had to watch the red/green to know. I know that can happen in a real engine due to slightly different BMEP and exhaust temperature, but seeing it here impressed me.

Pretender, is it cool to discuss the specific settings we are using, maybe after a while longer so we don’t spoil the game? I’d eventually love to know what the winning formula was, if the genius behind it doesn’t mind sharing. I’m sure I’d learn something.

Another hour and the best I can get back to is 197 at 10,300 RPM.

I played around with exhaust diameters and they plateaued around 3 inches IIRC. I decided upon 6" just because it looked absurd lol. No power loss from it surprisingly

Ah, I noticed it when I took a try. Oh well.

Here is my attempt at it.
