NZ Struck by big Shaker!

An earthquake, 6.6 on the Richter scale, struck at 12:02am NZST, 20km north of a small town called Cheviot. Rocking lasted for 1.5 minutes, and was felt all across the country.

All I can say is holy fucking shit, I am frightened.

I never felt the previous Christchurch quakes, but I felt that one (I’m south of Auckland).

Oh wow. A while ago my family watched a The Nature Of Things episode and part of it talked about how New Zealand is on a fault line, which would devastate the area if an earthquake happened. I hope everyone there is okay and stay safe.

There was only one earthquake I witnessed, woke me up in the night, as it made some furniture screech. Was still unsettling, even though it was really minor and did no harm.
My regards to you in New Zealand, take care, stay calm and remain safe and sound!

Seems that they’ve upscaled the magnitude to 7.5, which it was first reported as.

TIL you sleep like a rock :joy:

Well, 2 people dead (one crushed in their own home, the other had a heart attack)

State Highway One, from Christchurch to Kaikoura is blocked off by slips, and most likely will not be open for a good few months.

Tsunami threat levels were decreased overnight.

Many schools have stopped exams for Today (most of ChCh/Canterbury) or the week (Wellington)

Welllington has had its CBD closed, but many are still going into work, anyway.

I was awake and no-one in the upper level of my house felt it. Their wasn’t that much damage in my area but on my street there is a concrete pole thing that is about the height of 0.75 metres defing physhics by leaning on a 45 degree angle with only 2 of its corners touching the ground! It isn’t leaning on anything I checked.

You in Auckland or Wellington?

Sorry Vri, I don’t want to be specific. You never know who is behind the keyboard

Good point, actually.

You might want to change your profile then because it says you are from Auckland.
