Pay It Forward Design Challenge [B1418, Closed]
Done and done

I wasn’t exactly sure what you meant by “half a second margin”, so I aimed for a target time of 2:33 dead, which wasn’t too much of a problem.
I’ll have my challenge ready in a bit, just need to think of something.
Very well done, I checked the build over and you are well under budget and your build ran a 1:30.32 for me, so its within the o:00.50 ‘margin’

Hey Chipskate… where’s that new challenge?

Sorry about the delay, I’m working on it. I should have it done by tomorrow if all goes well.

Okay, here goes  Again, I apologize for being so late. I was completely unprepared for being first in line, and hadn’t thought up anything in advance. As such, my challenge probably isn’t as hard or balanced as it should be, but oh well.

Backstory
Ah, the late 60’s, the age of the muscle car. A time when street cred was decided by quarter-mile times and penis size measured in cubic inches (okay, it still is to this day but that’s besides the point). The american car industry was at its peak and produced some of the most iconic and desired cars to ever come out of Detroit. In short, the US was a petrolhead Mecca.
And then the fuel crisis attacked…

Two year later, the automotive industry is still in shock. While the OPEC has lifted its fuel embargo, pretrol prices remain high and sales of the old gas guzzlers have plummeted. The fact that the new emission requirements have neutered both power output and fuel efficiency doesn’t exactly help either. Your company, Decker Motor Corp. has not been spared, either. While your cars were always a step ahead of the competiton, they still shared the same flawed design philosophy. Your flagship model, the once mighty Oppressor, is a shadow of its former self, and the cars are gathering dust in the showrooms. You realize that if you want your company to survive 'til the next decade you need to change your strategy, and that quickly.

The fruits of your (well, your engineers actually, but lets not pretend about that, shall we?) labour presents itself as the Vivo. The car is in many ways different from what your company used to make. It’s a lightweight, practical and economical 3-door fastback with a small four-banger under the bonnet. What it does share, however, is the technical prowess. While Ford and GMs offerings still use ox cart suspension and pushrod engines from the victorian era, the Vivo has independent suspension on all four wheels, a five-speed gearbox and an all aluminium 12-valve SOHC engine. It can even put up a fight against European cars, something that’s previously been unheard of for an american car.

While you are happy with your new baby, you can’t help but feel empty inside. Your regularly find yourself lamenting the glory days, and in a moment of melancholy you make a decision; you are going to make the memories a reality once more. You are going to build a car that not only matches the old muscle car in straight-line performance, but surpasses them in every other area. Since you don’t have enough resources to design a whole new car, you decide to use the Vivo as a base platform. Fueled by your determination (and shortage of staff) you take a stroll down to the engineering department, and for the first time in 15 years, you take a seat in front of the drawing board. Gentlemen, fire up your engines!

Design goals

 • Must do the quarter mile on Tulsa in less than 14 seconds
 • Must lap the Airfield track in less than 1:31
 • Fuel economy better than 8.4 l/100 km / 28 US MPG
 • Emissions less than 1000
 • Engine reliability above 40
 • Overall reliability above 60
 • Tameness above 30
 • Sportiness above 20
 • Comfort above 20
 • Safety above 20
 • Total production costs less than $7000

Rules and restrictions

 • Must be based on the Vivo - that is, no changes to the platform at all except for fixtures
 • No canards (bonnet/hood-mounted wings)
 • No race intakes or race manifolds
 • Loudness between 40 - 65 - you want the car loud enough to be heard, but not so loud that it gets people pulled over
 • No semi-slick tires - you don’t want your customers to be killed whenever there is a slight drizzle, since the lawsuits would be humongous
 • Max tire quality is +2
 • Cooling airflow must satisfy engine requirements

And those are all the restrictions you have. That’s right, there are almost no limits on what you’re allowed to do with the engine. A turbocharged inline-four, a high-revving straight-six or a big, burly V8 - it doesn’t matter, it’s all up to you!

You’ll find the Vivo attached below. It does use some parts from the Automation Mod pack, but I assume you already have that installed. I’ve also attached the original Oppressor so you can see what you’re up against. Oh and extra awesome points if you can come up with a cool design. Good luck!

I think I got it.

Went for a 4.1L V8 and I was able to barely do it.

Balancing between the fairly low costs, the economy and emission requirements as well as the performance requirements proved to be fairly challenging.

Had to run Al block with hypereutectic pistons and a cat. Tried cast Iron and Forged pistons but that required me to run super low compression, resulting in bad performance and economy.

Yep, everything checks out on my end. Good job, man, and glad you found it challenging!
As always, here’s my car as proof that I didn’t pull the requirements out of my arse:

It was definitely interesting to see how your approach differed from mine; while my car probably would have lower R&D, yours would be easier to live with. It’s much cheaper to run, both in terms of fuel efficiency and service costs, and thanks to the aero it should be more stable at high speeds, too. That being said, I would NOT want to pay for new tires for that thing

It’s 1992, and the Northern Motor Company has tasked you with building a car for the Kazakhstan asphalt rally.

Because you have a very small budget, you will have to use the 1987 Lynx ST4 that has been laying around in the factory’s yard for the last 5 years. While the car completely dominated the world touring car championship back in its days, the elements weren’t good on it and it is now in fairly bad shape.

Will you be able to bring it back to it’s former glory?

So, here are the rules and limitations.

-You cannot modify anything in the platform tab, with the exception of fixtures.
-You cannot change the configuration of the engine or the bore and stroke.
-You cannot use any assists except power steering.

-Engine year can be any year up to 1992, car year must stay 1987.
-You can use any tires up to 225mm width.
-You must use RON80
-The car must have a minimum safety of 20
-The car must weight at least 1000kg.
-You are limited to a Total cost of 10000$
-Engine reliability must be at least 30

The NMC racing team will judge that the car’s performance is satisfactory if it can make it around the automation test track in less that 2 minutes 20 seconds.
They will give you a nice bonus if you can get it under 2 minutes 15 seconds.

What exactly can i change on the engine?

Everything except the configuration (it must stay an I6) and bore and stroke dimensions.

The rest you can do anything as long as you are within the other limits.

How’s it going there rayman?

3rayman3 has timed out.

Necronassassin… the last challenge is yours to take. You have 3 days to complete it.

little busy at the moment, just finished the steam art and trying to finish a car model;) gonna pass it on to the next person and i if can go to the back of the line;)

Very well. You’ve been moved to the end of the line, and the challenge falls to maffc.

Due to several competitors not responding or dropping out, and the impending Steam release, this series is being suspended indefinitely.

It was fun while it lasted. This and the CTC were really the only challenges I liked. Oh well…

NoooOOoooOOooooOOOoooOOOoo

Well, it makes sense to at least put it on hold until the dist settles post steam release. Might want to re-recruit after that though!
