what must one do to receive a challenge?
You need to wait until the person before you in the list at the first page clears his challenge, then you will receive one
If you’d like to join in this round, I’ll add you to the end of the list.
And reminder to all the other competitors: You can start thinking about the challenge you want to issue to the person below you at any time. You just can’t actually post it until the previous challenge is cleared.
This challenge is for TheTom!
Your job? Slash total costs approximately $10,000/car…but don’t change the stats too much. This is a highly anticipated car and the specifications need to impress potential buyers.
The story: It’s 2009, and you’re an engineer at a major automaker… that just declared bankruptcy! It’s not a liquidation, just a reorganization, so operations will continue albeit at a reduced capacity. Your team has been working hard on a high-performance luxury sport sedan designed to destroy your competition. However, with high development costs and general economic uncertainty, management has demanded that you not only drastically reduce the development costs of this new car, but also maintain its original performance and efficiency targets!
Most of the vehicle design choices are too far along in the development process and are therefore locked. Any changes to them would cost more in further research and development - money you and your team simply do not have. You can only use your spare time for tuning, and parts laying around the factory.
You may change ONLY the following:
*Chassis material (the factory is big enough for tooling of all types, and has its own STEEL mill)
*Cam profile (there are plenty of cams to choose from around the factory)
*Max boost (easily changed in the ECU tune)
*Intake (can use the performance intake from the company’s sports car with the same engine)
*Fuel mixture (easily changed in the ECU tune)
*Ignition timing (easily changed in the ECU tune)
*Single or dual exhaust (the body was designed to accommodate both configurations)
*Exhaust diameter (the factory carries pipes of all sizes due to large model range)
*Tire compound (the company struck a deal with a tire supplier as part of its reorganization plan)
*REAR tire width (cannot be less than front tire width - which must remain 265mm)
*Aero inclination
*Downforce
As for the quality sliders, ALL can be adjusted. They can be reduced, but NOT raised from their current levels. (for example, if there is +7 quality, it can be dropped to +6 or below… if there is -7 quality, it can be dropped to -8 or below).
Management requirements:
*Minimum 550 horsepower
*1/4 mile time in 12.99 or faster /// edit: (using main game stats)
*Minimum tameness: 59
*Minimum car reliability: 64
*Minimum 20 miles per gallon /// edit: (20 US mpg or 24 UK mpg)
*Maximum total cost: $14,500

Got it. I’ll start working on it tomorrow. Just asking, can i change the compression ratio or not? It would make sense because if you adjust cam profile, mad boost and fuel mixture, you might have to change compression ratio as well. And 1/4 time as measured by the game’s main stats or as measured on Tulsa? Oh, and UK miles per gallon or US mpg?
Excellent questions!
- Changing the compression ratio is not allowed. The cylinder head and piston designs are “locked” because re-tooling the engine factory to accommodate these changes would be too expensive. (at least in my scenario they would be)
- 1/4 mile time as measured by the game’s main stats… I don’t want anyone to have to download anything they don’t already have… too much hassle IMO.
- US mpg as that was my benchmark… but for ease of comparison, let’s say 24 UK mpg -or- 20 US mpg. Whichever is easier for you to work with.
Alright. Not being able to change the compression ratio added a little bit of a twist to this challenge, but at least i made it. Not making even my first challenge received would have made me feel real bad given the fact that i’ve been playing Automation for over 2 years now. So here it is, the Prototype 1 in the “finished” edition xD By the way, the economy figures in the first screenshot are US mpg.
I will post my challenge for Pleb soon, i just need to make sure it’ll be hard enough
Greets,
Tom

Below is the challenge for Pleb!
You’re a young mechanic with a big dream. You want to build your own cars. Obviously, you have to start by building one car, and for that you’ve saved up 9.500$.
You’re very ambitious to finish your first ever car and start working right away. After a few weeks, you come up with this:
Your mom and dad are proud of you having built your own car. They appreciate the styling, too. But recently, your dad has been talking about wanting a new car, and luckily for you, he said he wanted a hatchback for more practicality. He offered you an additional 3.000$ if you would change the car to make it more suitable for him, which you gladly accepted.
Obviously, being a young car enthusiast, your idea of a good car is very different from his. He wants a comfortable, safe and easy to drive car with good reliability and fuel economy. And, because he would like to be able to overtake drivers like… your grandfather, it has to be moderately fast too. And you have to be done with the changes within one week. All that while keeping it within the cost limit.
REQUIREMENTS
- Comfort: 50+
- Tameness: 50+
- Safety: 40+
- Car Reliability 67.5 or higher
- less than 5l/100km (i.e. at least 56.5mpg UK / 47.0mpg US)
- 0-100km/h in 9.0 seconds or less
- 130 manhours max.
- less than 12.500$ total cost
- must be turbocharged
- 95RON max

- Intercooler, Compressor, Turbine, A/R Ratio, Max. Boost
- Fuel Mixture, Ignition timing
- RPM limit can be lowered, but not raised
- Exhaust diameter, muffler types
- Gearing, but not gearbox type or amount of gears
- Brake disk size
- Interior, entertainment and safety options, sound insulation
- Cooling and Brake airflow, aero inclination, downforce
- Cambers, dampers, springs and sway bar sharpness

- Injection type
- Exhaust header, Cat. type

Excellent job Tom! Management is most pleased with your efforts. Customers probably won’t notice the drop in quality , but you were able to deliver the product the managers wanted, within budget, and far exceeded many of the design targets. Two thumbs up
Tom, your challenge car gives me a LUA error for ‘EngineDimensions’, I’m not sure what’s wrong… Could you maybe send me the engine LUA too?
Sure. I now added the engine file to the previous post.
How’s it going there, Pleb?
I’m working on it, I just need economy and cost…
Damn, I’m really struggling with this one… I have everything except acceleration, which currently sits at 11.8 seconds
Invoke Jeremy Clarkson’s magical call for POWEEEER!
I don’t know if this as meant as encouragement or mocking, but I did it in 30 minutes… and in the process made it so that it can run on 91 RON fuel.
I have no idea what I’m doing wrong! This is embarrassing
Uh oh… not looking so good for you then is it?
If you want to throw in the towel, you can. You’d still have to issue a new challenge to the next person on the list from pg 1.
No, I want to finish the challenge! I’ll have another crack at it tomorrow, I refuse to be beaten!
Go ahead, take your time. I’ll spend that time thinking about what sort of “punishment” you shall receive if you fail
