ROUND 2

AMCW Scout Sport

@Madrias

Scout presents a mix of strengths and weaknesses. While its suspension tune and practicality fall short, with the rear not catching up with the front and limited off-road capability, it excels in safety, fuel efficiency, reliability, and meeting the intended brief. The vehicle offers reassurance to drivers and passengers with its safety features, achieves acceptable mileage, and instills confidence in its long-term durability. With a sporty character and a performance feel, it shows promise in terms of driving experience. However, improvements are needed in terms of suspension refinement, comfort, and off-road capabilities. In summary, it has room for improvement and would benefit from further refinement to address its shortcomings. When making a decision about buying Scout, it is essential for potential buyers to carefully consider their priorities and take into account the pros and cons highlighted in this review. This thoughtful assessment will help them determine if the vehicle is a suitable match for their specific preferences and needs. - not considered

Schultz Berger 364H

@Danicoptero

Schultz is a mixed bag. While there are some notable drawbacks, such as the peculiar and cheap-looking hood vents, headlights that don’t extend sufficiently to the sides, and rear lights design that doesn’t quite work, the overall build quality is solid and reliable. However, the decision to utilize a light truck mono-chassis may seem out of place on a sporty premium SUV (going for light truck mono feels a bit min-maxy in this instance). Performance-wise, Berger 364H suffers from high RPMs at cruising speed and a subpar stopping distance, which may impact the driving experience. On the positive side, there are no major complaints about the construction or components, indicating a durable and well-constructed vehicle. Potential buyers should carefully consider the balance between the vehicle’s strengths, such as its solid build quality and reliability, and its weaknesses, including design flaws and unconventional engineering choices. It’s crucial to assess individual desires to see if Berger is suitable for their lifestyle. - not considered

WM Welkin 3.5 4x4

@abg7

WM takes a minimalistic approach to design, offering an unassuming yet acceptable appearance. Despite its drawbacks, including high-ish RPMs at 110km/h, weak brakes, and a simplistic design, it excels in drivability, performance, off-road capabilities, prestige, utilitarianism, and affordability. While it may not satisfy those seeking a visually striking vehicle, it provides a smooth and enjoyable driving experience, adequate performance for daily use, and the ability to venture off-road. With a decent sense of prestige and utilitarian features, it caters to practical needs. Considering its low price, WM presents an appealing option for budget-conscious buyers. - not considered
(it is a good effort however lack of visual appearance drags it down massively in this design orientated round)

Wells Activ Sport

@DuceTheTruth100

The design falls short with small door handles and unappealing elements like the carbon fiber piece under the headlights. The tire width is comparable to that of a Polo, and while some effort was made at the rear, overall aesthetics leave much to be desired. Moving on to the drawbacks, Activ Sport experiences high RPMs at 110km/h, potentially impacting fuel efficiency. Satellite navigation is absent, opting for a premium CD system instead. The inclusion of a clutched differential raises questions about its performance offroad, and the off-road capabilities and load capacity are disappointing considering the solid axle. On a positive note, Wells Activ Sport showcases solid drivability and satisfactory performance, although not exceptional. In summary, Activ Sports’ design flaws, high RPMs, lack of satellite navigation, clutched differential, underwhelming off-road capabilities, and limited load capacity hinder its appeal. However, it does offer decent drivability and performance. - not considered

IP Brigadier 4800 GLX

@Knugcab

IP Brigadier 4800 GLX excels as a purpose-built off-roader, offering reliability, decent performance, and impressive off-road capabilities at an attractive price point. However, there are some drawbacks to consider. Its off-road orientation hinders on-road performances and drivability, while the soft suspension compromises handling and comfort, furthermore, Brigadier is equipped only with ABS, there is a complete absence of ESC or even TC which is a major oversight in our book. While the design has some disproportion, the small details and rear of the vehicle add visual appeal. The fuel economy could be improved, but the overall reliability and value make up for it. In summary, IP is a purpose-built off-roader that stays true to its intended purpose. It may not deliver exceptional on-road performances or the most comfortable ride, but its reliability and off-road capabilities make it a solid choice. The attractive price further enhances its appeal. Potential buyers looking for a capable and purpose-built off-road vehicle should consider IP Brigadier 4800 GLX, appreciating its positive attributes while keeping in mind the minor drawbacks. - not considered
(I applaud you for making a purpose-built offroader and absence of min-maxing. However, Lando is not looking for a hard-core offroader and Brigadier lacks in design department considering the competition)

Bowie Alamo 5.0 PXC

@Texaslav

Bowie Alamo 5.0 PXC offers a satisfying driving experience despite a few shortcomings. It exhibits a noticeable roll angle during sharp turns and could improve fuel economy. (LED DRLs may seem too modern for 2003 - yes am aware of E39s angel lights but those circles were much thinner). However, the vehicle compensates with its positive features. It includes a satnav system for convenient navigation and boasts commendable drivability with smooth handling and responsive performance. Comfort is ensured for both the driver and passengers, and on-road performance is solid, instilling confidence in various road conditions. Alamo exudes prestige, displaying sophistication and quality. Its practicality shines through with a decent load capacity and utility stat. Safety, reliability, and performance also meet expectations. Despite areas for improvement, such as roll angle, fuel economy, and LED DRLs, vehicle excels in satnav availability, drivability, comfort, on-road performance, prestige, load capacity, and utility. These attributes make it an appealing choice for buyers prioritizing these features. - not considered
(this one is the one that just got cut from the finals. If its rear design was a bit more detailed it would make it to the finals)

Fowler Atlas 360GP

@Ludvig

Atlas combines impressive drivability, low RPMs, ample torque, prestige, affordability, and overall performance. However, practicality and fuel economy could use improvement. Its unconventional design, reminiscent of the nostalgic Ford Scorpio, is both unique and appealing, although the front could benefit from more sculpturing. Despite feeling somewhat dated for its 2003 release, this SUV remains a competitive option in its segment. It offers a satisfying driving experience with its smooth cruise speeds and responsive power delivery. Safety features such as electronic stability control (ESC) enhance driving confidence, and the inclusion of satellite navigation adds convenience. While lacking in some modern refinements, Atlas delivers a decent package that balances style and capability. With room for growth in practicality and fuel efficiency, it remains a viable choice for those seeking a capable and visually appealing SUV.

Capable Hefter

@Vento

Hefter has made some design improvements but still falls behind its competition. Its rear bumper, made of a steel beam with sharp edges, could use refinement. The wheels have a modern touch, but overall, the pickup truck gives off a mid-80s appearance. While the vehicle has drawbacks in terms of practicality, braking distance, undertray optimization, thin tires, and slower acceleration compared to competitors, it compensates with strong points. Capable Hefter offers good drivability, providing an enjoyable driving experience. It exudes a sense of prestige and delivers commendable fuel economy and reliability. Safety is also a highlight, thanks to its weight. In summary, Hefter shows improvement in its design but still lags behind its competitors. It suffers in practicality, braking distance, undertray optimization, and acceleration, but excels in drivability, prestige, fuel economy, reliability, and safety. Potential buyers should consider these factors when deciding if it meets their requirements. - not considered

Well, Patrol, Pajero and to some extent Land Cruiser were my inspirations so seems like I caught on that vibe then…and yes, I was a bit afraid that going a bit too off-roady was going to hurt my chances. :smiley:

How can you tell if your rpms are too high at cruising speeds? I even drove it in Beam on the highway to test that out lol.

There are a few ways, but the easiest is in the Fuel Economy detailed stat. “Too high” is a matter of opinion and preference as much as any objective criteria, IRL as well as in-game.

I’m glad my entry has made it this far. I had started off with an evolution of a current SUV I had already made and built a new engine, but felt it looked too old. So I made a new truck for the new engine which I submitted - it’s stats where overall better anyhow.

And then gave the original a facelift to match my entry…

Could you please confirm that you have sent in the file? I don’t have any recollection of your entry.

I’m glad that my oddball PT-Cruiser-inspired retro truck made it as far as it did. I’m sure if I’d sent it in with the original planned configuration, it would’ve been binned immediately, but, it’s definitely designed as a road car that just so happens to have a bit of load capacity, rather than an off-road vehicle. (The original version had a transverse V6 and FWD, with torsion beam rear end. Because it was meant to be a bit of a shitbox.)

And, yeah, I struggle at making the vehicle “match” front and rear, even at the best of times.

This page in Automation has info regarding fuel economy at various speeds in higher gears.

The thrill of venturing off the beaten path, conquering rugged terrains, and exploring the uncharted has always captivated the hearts of adventurers and automotive enthusiasts alike. For those who seek the ultimate off-road experience, the market offers a plethora of remarkable vehicles engineered to push the boundaries of what’s possible. In this comprehensive review, we dive into the world of off-roaders and present the top five contenders that have garnered praise for their exceptional performance and off-road capabilities.

FINALS
CONQUERING NEW HORIZONS

ONES FOR THE ROAD

Zephorus Rossi

@Riley

In the world of SUVs, there is one particular model that shines on the pavement, delivering an exceptional on-road experience. With its distinctive design, the perfect blend of utility and prestige, and a range of positive attributes, this vehicle captivates the hearts of enthusiasts. However, it’s important to note that while it excels in certain areas, it falls short in off-road performance. Let’s dive into the details. Starting with the downsides, comfort takes a hit due to the presence of a solid axle and a manual transmission. The solid axle, although suitable for rugged terrains, compromises the overall comfort of the vehicle, especially on uneven surfaces. Additionally, the manual transmission, while adding to the overall sporty feel, can be tiring due to the constant shifting of gears, particularly during longer drives or congested traffic situations. On the positive side, drivability is a strong suit, especially for those who appreciate the engagement of a manual transmission. The connection between the driver and the vehicle is exceptional, allowing for precise control and an exhilarating on-road experience. This SUV truly rewards those who enjoy pushing the limits and feeling connected to the road. When it comes to safety, prestige, reliability, driving characteristics, design, and load capacity, this SUV earns high marks. Advanced safety features prioritize the well-being of its occupants, instilling confidence in their daily drives. The vehicle’s driving characteristics are notable, offering exceptional road grip and the ability to push it to its limits with ease. Its design stands out, combining utilitarian elements with a touch of prestige, making it a head-turner on the streets. The load capacity is commendable, allowing for versatile hauling capabilities. However, it is important to acknowledge that the focus of Zephorus is primarily on-road feel and driving characteristics, which compromises its off-road performance. With a rear-wheel-drive configuration, navigating through water or going up gravel embankments becomes a struggle. The SUV lacks the necessary off-road components and capabilities to conquer challenging terrains with confidence. As a result, it is not the ideal choice for those seeking extensive off-road adventures. In summary, Rossi impresses with its distinctive design that combines utilitarianism and prestige. It excels in drivability, safety, prestige, reliability, driving characteristics, design, and load capacity. However, it falls short in terms of comfort due to the solid axle and manual transmission, and its off-road performance leaves something to be desired. If you prioritize a thrilling on-road experience, exceptional road grip, and a vehicle that stands out with its unique design, this SUV is a brilliant choice. However, if off-road capability is a priority, it’s important to explore other options that cater specifically to that domain.

Valiant Kalahari

@mart1n2005

Kalahari strikes a balance between drivability, comfort, reliability, and utility. It offers a rugged and utilitarian appearance, with carefully selected accessories that make it suburban-friendly. While it has its limitations, there are notable strengths worth mentioning. Starting with the downsides, this car tends to run at higher RPMs, which can be noticeable at speeds around 110. This may affect the overall refinement, making it less ideal for long highway drives. Additionally, the presence of an open differential could cause problems when encountering challenging terrains, especially when only one wheel has traction. This limitation may restrict the car’s off-road capabilities and limit its ability to tackle tough conditions, however in our off-road tests it faired well tho not as well as competition with fancy electronics and locking diffs. Furthermore, the lack of a built-in satellite navigation system might be disappointing considering the amount of money you need to spend to get your hands on one. On the positive side, this car excels in drivability, providing a balanced and enjoyable ride. It handles well on both urban roads and winding country lanes, offering a smooth and confident driving experience. Comfort is also decent, ensuring a pleasant journey for both the driver and passengers. Suspension reacts good to sharp and angulated bumps. When it comes to reliability, this SUV is known for its robust engineering and durability, requiring fewer visits to the workshop and providing peace of mind. Utility is another strength of Kalahari, with a well-designed trunk opening that makes loading and unloading items more convenient. The Kalahari’s practicality is further enhanced by its versatility and ample cargo space, making it suitable for various lifestyle needs. In terms of aesthetics, this car has a rugged and utilitarian appearance, complemented by carefully selected accessories that give it a suburban-friendly touch. While the overall design is appealing, more attention could have been given to the lights, particularly the headlights, to enhance the visual appeal. Nonetheless, it manages to strike a balance between being visually appealing and maintaining a sense of practicality, albeit it may come across as somewhat ordinary. In conclusion, this SUV offers a balanced ride with a range of positive attributes. Its drivability, decent comfort, reliability, utility, and reasonable service costs make it a desirable option for those seeking a practical and reliable daily driver. While it has some limitations, such as the higher RPMs and the open differential, which might affect performance in certain situations, it still offers a satisfying driving experience. Its rugged and utilitarian appearance, complemented by suburban-friendly accessories, adds a touch of style to its overall package. With a bit more attention to detail, particularly in the lights department, this car has the potential to further elevate its appeal.

THE OFFROADER

Milano Sanremo MMV8

@the-chowi

While it possesses notable strengths, it also falls short in certain areas, suggesting a somewhat imbalanced approach. Let’s explore the details. Starting with the downsides, this car exhibits high-ish RPMs at 110 km/h, which may impact both refinement and fuel efficiency. Additionally, the roll angle of the vehicle approaches the limit of acceptability, potentially compromising stability and safety, particularly during dynamic maneuvers. Comfort is also an area of concern, with an uncomfortable ride that can be felt by occupants. This lack of comfort might make long journeys or rough terrains a less enjoyable experience. While the load capacity and cargo volume are commendable, suggesting good practicality, it feels as though other practical aspects were disregarded during the engineering process. The ride height is significantly elevated, which can hinder ease of entry and exit for some passengers. It seems that the engineers prioritized off-road capabilities, which led to compromises in other areas of the vehicle’s overall performance and practicality. On the positive side, the design of this car compensates for many of its downfalls. With its visually appealing aesthetics, it manages to make a strong impression. The reliability of this car is also commendable, instilling confidence in owners and ensuring peace of mind on their journeys. When it comes to off-roadability, the vehicle shines, demonstrating solid capabilities to conquer rugged terrains with ease. However, one notable aspect of the design that raises an eyebrow is the sharp roofline and the exact 90-degree crossover between the roof and the doors. While this may give the car a unique appearance, it also gives off a “Lego car” vibe, which may not resonate with everyone’s aesthetic preferences. Despite this, the rest of the vehicle exhibits a solid build, and the interior showcases plush materials, enhancing the overall appeal. In general, this car presents a mixed bag of trade-offs. Its striking design compensates for many of its downsides, while its reliability and off-road capabilities are notable strengths. The high-ish RPMs, uncomfortable ride, and compromised safety may be deterrents for some. Additionally, the imbalanced focus on off-road performance suggests that practicality and other aspects were not given equal attention. However, for those who prioritize unique design, reliability, and off-road adventures, this car offers a visually appealing and capable choice.

THE PERFECT BALANCE

Hinode Redwood Limited

@S_U_C_C_U_L_E_N_T

Redwood offers ample cargo space, off-road capabilities, and satisfactory on-road characteristics. While it has its strengths, there are also areas that leave room for improvement. Starting with the downsides, the suspension tune of this SUV is a bit harsh, which may affect the overall ride quality. While it may not be a deal-breaker, it’s worth noting that a more refined suspension setup could enhance the driving experience. Safety features, while present, could be improved as they utilize standard options rather than incorporating advanced technologies found in some other models. Additionally, the absence of a built-in satellite navigation system might be a drawback for those who heavily rely on GPS navigation. On the positive side, this SUV excels in off-road capability, drivability, and comfort, particularly for a ladder chassis and solid axle setup. Its rugged construction allows it to handle rough terrains with ease, making it a suitable choice for outdoor adventures. The drivability is commendable, offering a balanced and confident on-road performance. Comfort, despite the ladder chassis and solid axle, is surprisingly good, providing a smooth ride for occupants. One of the notable highlights of Redwood is its spacious cargo area. With ample room for hauling gear, luggage, or any other items, it proves to be practical for various activities. Furthermore, the integration and proportional fit of the front and rear doors with the seating and cargo area showcase thoughtful design considerations. Another convenient feature is the ability to open the liftgate rear window separately from the tailgate, providing added flexibility and convenience. The Limited model, in particular, stands out with its additional features, including fog lights, running boards, attractive alloy wheels, and a rear spoiler. These details enhance the overall aesthetic, giving it a clean, purposeful, and imposing presence on the road. In conclusion, this SUV offers a spacious and capable choice for those seeking off-road adventures and a comfortable on-road experience. While the suspension tune and safety could be improved, the SUV compensates with its off-road capability, drivability, and surprising comfort. The cargo space is generous. With added features in the Limited model, the SUV presents a clean and purposeful look that exudes confidence.

Valens Valmeinier 3200P

@pen15

In the world of SUVs, there is a standout model that excels in drivability, on-road performance, off-road capabilities, exquisite comfort, practicality, and impeccable styling. While it boasts numerous strengths, there are also a few concerns that need to be addressed. Let’s explore the intricacies in more detail. Starting with the downsides, reliability has been flagged as an area of concern for this SUV. While it’s important to note that individual experiences may vary, it is prudent to consider this aspect before making a purchasing decision. On the positive side, the drivability of Valmeinier is remarkable, offering a smooth and enjoyable ride. Its on-road performance excels, providing confidence and agility in various driving conditions. When it comes to off-road capabilities, Valens proves its worth, effortlessly tackling challenging terrains and embracing its expedition heritage. Exquisite comfort is a standout feature of Valmeinier. The sumptuous interior creates a warm and cozy cocoon, enveloping occupants in luxury. Practicality is another strength, offering ample cargo space and versatility to accommodate various needs. Whether it’s hauling groceries, luggage, or larger items, it proves to be adaptable and functional. The styling of this vehicle deserves special mention. Its understated but unmistakably classy sheet metal exudes a sense of serious old money. The Valen’s exterior design captures attention with its timeless elegance and refined aesthetics. Inside, the rock-solid structure and advanced engineering of the powertrain reflect the vehicle’s commitment to quality and performance. Furthermore, the SUV’s multifarious driveline and suspension adjustments add to its versatility, allowing drivers to customize their driving experience to suit their preferences and specific road conditions. In summary, Valens Valmeinier 3200P embodies a perfect blend of style, capability, and comfort. While there are concerns regarding reliability and high-ish RPMs at higher speeds, the overall package of drivability, on-road performance, off-road capabilities, exquisite comfort, practicality, and perfect styling make it a compelling choice. Few vehicles can match its adeptness on the road or opulence within its doors. It stands tall, casting a substantial shadow over the competition.

Congratulations to the winner and props to vouge for an excellent round!

I do feel like giving some extra comment, and no offence to vouge, but I’m starting to have mixed feelings about the recent prevalence of CSR-disguised-as-QFC. There is going to be a point where the host does not feel like it or is unable while a “normal” QFC review would have allowed for that.

As the silly person who did #23, at times I simply didn’t enjoy writing the reviews. The imminent deadline and pretty large workload resulted in a fair amount of times where I was genuinely stressed, and didn’t want to do it, but I also didn’t want to make a fool of myself and quit it halfway.

Now 2 QFCs later and we still have this almost-CSR thing (granted, HappyHungryHippo’s hosting was much more QFC-like than mine and this one, barring the finals). In my humble opinion we should consider not going over the top for QFC anymore as it is set to result in future disappointment.

Not to say that it is bad; it is good for beginner-focused challenges, even. Long, meaty reviews give a lot of insight. However, with this QFC (and admittedly mine) it was a bit more on the exposition and story side rather than advice and feedback. Additionally I found this CSR’s premise easier than this QFC’s, with its rules and regulations.

In the future, it would perhaps be better to stay closer to the “tweet length” as per the original QFC’s hosting guidelines, and not to make QFC a contest of ‘which host can stress themselves out the most and not crumple for a week’.

I think we must enforce a 20 words review rule to stay true to the idea of QFC, and all reviews must be finished within 24 hours after the submission deadline because that is what the people what.

Now that’s some thick trolling right there

7 Likes

How would you enforce this exactly? Get the automation police involved?

I would try not to worry as long as the rounds are being done in under a week I don’t think it’s worth getting too worked up over

The top two here haven’t even acknowledged the finals anyway so it’s not exactly getting the next round up fast

Nice review style, good writeup and criticisms as well as strong points, enjoyable for sure. Thanks for hosting!

We can’t enforce it, but I felt like it had to be said in a futile attempt to avoid it becoming competitive and/or people feeling bad when they don’t write 500 words in the reviews.

First of all, thank you vouge for a great round.

Speaking of which, I was until very recently writing and coming up with my own round (basically finished it) but it’s come to my attention that the challenge I was preparing was too ambitious for the short nature of QFC. As I’m pretty busy with school and don’t wanna delay anything any further, I’ll have to pass down hosting to @S_U_C_C_U_L_E_N_T.
