Quick-Fire Challenge 54: Muscle for the Masses

Backstory

Sultanate of Dalluha, 1970

Following the fallout from the 1962 Prisman Missile Crisis, the West placed an embargo on Dalluhan cars. Not long after, the Sultanate issued retaliatory embargos, one of the consequences of which was that a burgeoning new class of cars arose and blossomed in the West, with Dalluha being scarcely aware of it. These were muscle cars; medium to medium-large, mostly 5-seaters, designed to dominate in a straight line, with a blend of roadholding and comfort as secondary priorities. Now, Dalluha certainly had no shortage of cars matching that description, but the country’s lower-budget demographics were in general somewhat underserved, and affordable performance especially so. In 1970, an industry consortium headquartered in Gasmea assembled a trade delegation to Basara, to present a sampling of this new western vehicle class in an attempt to woo the Sultanate - especially the Sultan himself, known to be an avid car enthusiast - to ease their end of the trade war in hopes that the whole thing would end.

Basara was initially reluctant, but on further consideration warmed to the idea of making a degree of performance available to a wider demographic. The Sultanate agreed to receive the delegation and put on an exhibition for public comment, but cautioned that sedans and station wagons (estates) would be much more likely to sell in the market at the time.

TLDR: 1970 Muscle car with 4 or 5 doors.

Rules
  • We’re using Ellisbury, not Al Rilma.
  • Default techpool
  • Trim must be 1970, engine 1970 or older.
  • Wheelbase ideally 2.8-3.0m, but not formally restricted
  • 4 or 5 doors. 4/5-door seam-n-patch conversions of 2/3-door bodies allowed on a case-by-case basis; contact me via DM or Discord first.
  • Convertibles ok, will want more interior work, get minor bonus for stats.
  • 20k soft limit, 25k hard limit
  • V16 ok
  • 98RON super leaded fuel
  • No emissions requirements
  • Maximum loudness 60.0
  • No parts with “race” in the name
  • RWD only
  • Semi-trailing arms add 1K to the price
  • Rear double-wishbone adds 3K to the price
  • Solid rear axles may not have toe or camber changes
  • At least 5 full seats
  • Wagons get free weight distribution slider
  • No legacy bodies or meme builds
  • No functional aero No net positive downforce
  • Advanced Trim Settings allowed, except Wheel Width, Wheel Diameter, Camber, and Tire Diameter.
  • Maximum road speed at idle in 1st gear: 15kph. Don’t worry about this unless you try to get 0-100kph in first gear.
  • Safety minimum: Standard 60s at 0 quality

Overrides:

  1. Staggered tire cost penalty reduced. SVC and upfront cost will be read as if your car has four tires of the larger size, or as large as will fit square.

  2. Comfort will be recalculated to remove Torque, Throttle Response, Gearbox, and Sound Insulation. We don’t mind a loud ride, just not too firm, please.

Mechanical realism expectations:
2/5. If it’s remotely plausible on a car of the era, go for it.

Stylistic realism expectations:
4/5. Doesn’t have to be a replica, but should look unambiguously late 60s to early 70s.

Priorities

Top priorities:

  • Straight-line speed, primarily 1km time
  • Adequate brakes
  • Exterior looks. Interiors will not be scored, but the car shouldn’t look like an empty shell. Dalluhan tastes tend to prefer bling over minimalism. Hidden headlights, pillarless hardtops, low rooflines, and hood scoops are very fashionable. Styling is slightly behind the West; 1960s boxiness generally looks more appealing to this market than 70s roundedness. But overall styling and execution can easily override any specifics.

Mid priorities:

  • Driveability
  • Service costs
  • Powertrain reliability (engine and driveline)
  • Comfort
  • Upfront cost

Low priorities:

  • Sportiness
  • Prestige
  • Wagon practicality bonus
  • Non-powertrain reliability
  • Safety beyond minimum.

Should any cylinder head type other than OHV receive a cost penalty, mainly for balancing reasons?

(Since I had a very old build around that still holds up IMO)

@pen15 ?

IMO engine costs don’t need rebalancing.

@AMuteCrypt Convertibles ok.

How can we check this? By looking at the gearing graph in the drivetrain tab? Or the gear ratio sliders (in basic or advanced mode)?

See drivetrain tab. Minimum road speed = (roadspeed at redline in first gear)*(idle RPM)/(redline).

So, uh… does the car have to be ‘American’? All but one of the inspirations are from the US.

Not at all, I just couldn’t find other real-world examples.

Hello, first time entering one of these, and making a forum post in general
I’m not entirely certain how to format an ad in a way that feels right to me, but I’ll give it a try.

Submissions will begin soon, and before they do, I have one proposed major revision for yall to comment on:

"Seats: 2 full-size fronts, 2 compact rears. Model and lore can be whatever you wish. The intention is to level the playing field for bodies - the 1973 Slantnose in particular - that have four doors and could make good contenders, but cannot fit full-size rear seats. Fixed seat count in engineering would also make ride comfort easier to compare. "

I don’t think that fits the challenge at all, at least what my interpretation of it is.

Op is asking for a family car. Back then that was a full rear bench seat at minimum (often times a front bench as well). Changing that to 2 foldaway buckets in the back turns this into a GT challenge.

That’s just my thoughts on it though.

Wouldn’t 2/+2 make estates pointless? Who buys a car with big ass trunk and only half seats in the back?

I don’t like having 2 compact seats, that lowers my comfort and I don’t like that

Most wagon variants are big enough to accommodate full-sized seats in the second row, so +2 rear seats should not be permitted, except on variants that cannot have a rear seating setup larger than +2.

I agree. A wagon this size with 2+2 seating would not make any sense at all. Straying away from the brief of a challenge to make it more “even” for some certain bodies feels backwards to me. “Slantnose”, isn’t that the Porsche-esque body? Would probably not be the first choice for most people in a challenge asking for muscle cars anyway.

I think that if you wish to compare specifically ride comfort, you should deal with the burden yourself instead of making all of us make unrepresentative cars. Moreover, four-door American-size cars have full-fat seats - that is something that can hardly be disputed. Even the compact and pony cars of the time were pretty sizeable; my intermediate hardtop, even though it’s deliberately space-inefficient, is over 5 meters long, and I wouldn’t be too surprised to see somebody try a full-size sedan like an Impala SS.

Based on the above: Please do not homogenize seat layouts.

Also can you make it so throttle response and sound insulation isn’t removed? I get positive bonuses for those stats and I like high stats
