QFC64 - Call of the West [RESULTS OUT]

GLOBUS CHIEF CRUISER WAGON

Be honest. You want to impress. You want to show your neighbours, workmates and relatives that you made it. You are a man! You are successful!

Will that work with a small car?

There is only one answer: NO!

Be a man. Buy a car, not a toy. A car that offers you enormous space in the interior, so that you do not have to worry about a cheeseburger more or less. A car that has a presence on the road, not something accidentally falling into manholes of your local sewer system. The base model wagon for $14.000 offers not only a nice premium interior with six seats, but also a V8. The fairytale that engines with less than eight pistons are convenient and economical is some propaganda by foreign competitors that just can not offer you a REAL car.

Sunday Chronicle (Family)

Practicality, driveablity and comfort all in one car. Introducing the Sunday Chronicle Family wagon, the newest trim of the Chronicle model.

Why did we decide on Chronicle for the name? Because this car will change automotive wagon design, and will be spoken of for centuries to come, as its main features include a fully openable 5th door, an advanced transmission system, and a brand new world-leading engine.

  • The Family trim features a 3-speed automatic transmission for maximum comfort and a relaxed driving experience, while still giving the car a fair top speed of 170 kilometers per hour, and 0 to 60 time of 14 seconds.

  • While most wagons in the Chronicle’s class usually use a V8, we at Sunday decided to join the innovative force, and created the Jumper F6 boxer engine that produces 155 horsepower and 290 newton meters of torque, all while being one of the most quiet and smoothest engines on the market.

  • While more expensive than the sedan trims, the Family trim comes in at the adequate price of 14.000$ USD.

Sunday. Perfect for the weekend.

Results

8th - Comanche Albatross (@breadtheloaf)
Score - 7.33

You get what you pay for with this spacious wagon. It’s among the cheaper entries, but it falls far short of its more expensive competition. Not a looker, not very comfortable, and not very fuel efficient, this one sits at the back of the pack, especially when it’s outclassed by an even cheaper competitor.

7th - Megocom Station EL (@LennoxV10)
Score - 11.12

Featuring 8 full seats, this yacht has plenty of torque from its I6. It’s the most comfortable of the bunch, thanks to its fancy interior and phonograph. With a galvanized chassis, it’ll hold up well in the elements. However, the third row of full seats eats away its cargo space, and its drivability, while not terrible, is worse than its rivals. Its lower price point, however, isn’t enough to place it higher.

6th - Renzo Grand Famiglia (@Capri78)
Score - 12.57

American styling meets Italian flair. This compact wagon offers a lot for its price. With very strong reliability, great fuel economy, and dirt cheap service costs, this wagon was designed to go the distance. While it’s not prestigious or as practical as its larger rivals, it offers great value for its lower price point. But, it’s too uncomfortable for it to place higher.

5th - Globus Chief Cruiser Wagon (@Happyhungryhippo)
Score - 12.92

Bold and brash, but does NOT belong in the trash. This behemoth comes standard with double bench seats and a beefy V8 giving plenty of low end torque. Its only two weak points are price and safety, which are small tradeoffs for its above average stats elsewhere. But, there’s better value for your money out there.

4th - Sunday Chronicle Family (@HyperskiesSM)
Score - 13.22

Despite its impressive length, it’s a nimble navigator with its FF layout. Its full independent suspension helps set this brick out from the crowd, providing a ride quality that’s rivaled by a few of the contenders. However, it’s not a true looker, service costs are high, and there are other wagons that offer more for less money. With a few more tweaks, this may have earned a podium.

Podium

3rd - Ostheim 4B (@Hilbert)
Score - 13.76

One of the seven East German wagons that made their way to the US, the Ostheim has surprising value for money. This cheap wagon beats out its competitors on drivability and fuel efficiency by a country mile, but it’s bone shatteringly uncomfortable and the tiny boxer 4 doesn’t perform well under heavy loads. Plus, the 3 door RR layout is questionable for a family hauler.

2nd - Knightwick Sentinel Traveller (@mart1n2005)
Score - 13.92

An all around great vehicle and very spacious for its size. This wagon scored above average in almost every stat despite being on the cheaper end. Its styling is a tad outdated and the engine not as powerful as others, but has great fuel efficiency and excellent safety. Overall, it’s fantastic bang for your buck earned it a spot on the podium.

1st - Cutty Caldera Rio Grande Custom (@missionsystem)
Score - 14

Stylish and flashy, this wagon does everything good. There’s plenty of torque from its 5L V8 MODUR and plenty of cargo room from its large wheelbase and roofrack. Its only weakness is fuel consumption, but it’s a small price to pay for the best wagon of the lot.

missionsystem, as per WFC rules, hosting the next round falls on you unless you pass it up.

Placement Order
OOC Thoughts

Comanche - The design is good, albeit basic, but the engineering was lacking the strength of the other contestants.

Megocom - The most comfortable one here, this one had some subpar stats that hindered it, especially the driveability.

Renzo - Loved the Italian/American fusion on the design. Not sure how the car was so uncomfortable, though. The low comfort held this one back.

Globus - Haha V8 go brrrr. Great engineering with a solid design

Sunday - An FF lanc yacht? Only GM would be dumb enough to try this. Nevertheless, the big blue brick managed a 4th with a very unconventional approach. Sometimes it pays to think differently.

Ostheim - I’m annoyed impressed this thing placed as high as it did. An East German wagon taking a podium in a challenge designed for yank tanks? Your lunacy paid off here.

Knightwick - Outstanding engineering as to be expected from you, but the design (which was excellent) just looked a little outdated. You were this close to a win.

Cutty - The engineering may not have been as good as some of the other entries, the design is what gave this car the edge over its rivals. Plus, love the 5L V8 stuffed under the hood. Well done.

Curious on how it was scored? Go here.

Thanks all for participating!

For a QFC that had a genuinely good (if not great) ruleset, 10 entrants (8 if bins are ignored) doesn’t sound like a lot compared to the previous one - but the field was surprisingly diverse (and high-quality to boot), so it’s not all bad. Let’s hope the next QFC gets a bigger entry list.

A bit of a shame that the Globus, which is a budget brand, lost over the price. Propably still a good offer for this size and a V8 - but the winner has the same and was cheaper. Still, a good and fast judging, and this round was very close to the actual idea of a QFC. Not that I disliked people making more out of it, but it is nice to see the original spirit of QFC back again.
