QFC68 | Poseidon Manta Ocean – Official Release

In 2020, Poseidon Automotive set out to answer a very specific problem.

Not how to build the fastest convertible.
Not how to build the loudest one.
But how to replace a much-loved Jaguar XK8 with something that finally works.

Designed for the Owner, Not the Stopwatch

The Poseidon Manta Ocean was engineered for owners like Anton—drivers who value reliability, refinement, and quiet confidence over theatrics. It is a purpose-built grand touring convertible, not a repurposed sedan with its roof removed.

At its core, the Manta Ocean prioritises long-term ownership satisfaction:

This is a car designed to start every time, travel far between fuel stops, and feel as good after five summers as it does on the first.

Engineering with Intent

A defining feature of the Manta Ocean is its deep-set, rearward engine placement within the front bay. The engine is pushed significantly behind the front axle line, delivering two key benefits:

  1. Improved weight distribution and steering calmness, essential for relaxed touring on imperfect European roads.
  2. Substantial usable luggage space ahead of the cabin, enabled by a long, uninterrupted bonnet volume.

This packaging allows the Manta Ocean to accommodate two full-size golf bags under the hood, without compromising crash structure or service access.

Front Compartment Capacity

  • Approx. 380–420 litres of usable front luggage volume
  • Optimised for long, rigid items such as golf bags rather than shallow cargo

This is not symbolic storage—it is genuinely functional, and central to the car’s mission.

A Presence That Belongs Anywhere

Visually, the Manta Ocean wears a low, F1-inspired nose profile, defined by a clean leading edge and restrained aero surfacing. The design is deliberate rather than aggressive—confident without being juvenile.

It is a car that looks appropriate:

  • outside a northern European golf club
  • in a Tuscan hill town
  • or parked beside a Mediterranean marina

Nothing oversized. Nothing shouty. Nothing pretending to be something it isn’t.

Ocean Philosophy

As an Ocean-trim Poseidon, the Manta follows the brand’s grand touring doctrine:

  • refinement first
  • performance delivered smoothly and accessibly
  • engineering decisions biased toward longevity

There are no Diver compromises here. No unnecessary edge. No engineering shortcuts taken for short-term gains.

The result is a convertible that feels expensive in the ways that matter—quiet structure, predictable behaviour, and the confidence that comes from sound fundamentals.

The Right Answer, at the Right Time

The Poseidon Manta Ocean exists because some buyers do not want to relearn their car every morning. They want to enjoy it.

For Anton, and for drivers like him, this is not just a replacement for an XK8—it is the car they hoped the XK8 would always become.

Even though the body set you used for your build will most likely be deprecated in the next major update, you’ve done a great job with it. Well done!

!SUBMISSIONS CLOSED!

I’m surprised that the field for this competition is so small (7 entries?! That’s less than a third of what I got in the preceding round!) - but here, it’s a case of quality over quantity. Then again, a lot of would-be entrants were too busy entering other Discord challenges around the same time and/or were left befuddled by the initial plan to use a tax calculator (which was eventually dumped).

Results:

7th Manta Ocean @PoseidonAutomotive

The only bin this round (naming). With only 7 entries I decided to rate it anyway, and it still came last. It scores ok in some areas, but not well enough overall and is very expensive (53500) due to a lot of unused tech pool (15m under budget). It also suffers from unrefined engineering, for example huge wheels and very soft dampers. Had it used all of the tech pool and spent a bit more time fine-tuning, it could have been a good competitor.

6th Welland CBT 2600 @breadtheloaf

The Welland goes neck and neck with the next-placed Wells. It only loses out in therms of looks, which is lacking in this class. The Welland has oddly large headlights and a a rear that’s not very exiting, with barely any fixtures anywhere else. It has the 3rd-best driveability and reliability, making it actually fairly competitive this round not including the styling.

5th Wells MC-1 @DuceTheTruth100

Just edging out the Welland despite having only 2 seats thanks to a long wheelbase and a (physically) tiny Boxer 4 behind the seats. It has the lowest reliability and high service cost this round, which as 3-star priorities really hurts. It is among the best looking, but that’s not enough to salvage a better position.

4th Zephorus Canyon @Riley

The Zephorus is a top contender in terms of looks, but falls behind in service cost and fuel economy (both worst of the bunch). It does have the highest driveability by far, but with reliability also being the 2nd worst and a way off the next one in that stat, it cannot rank any higher that 4th. With the top positions being very tight, having optimised a bit more for the other 3-star priorities, it may have won by a large margin.

3rd Bovos 5Iron @Ultimate_Billy

A great car with lacking in the looks department. It is right on the tails of the top 1 and 2 placed contenders, but falls short mainly in fuel economy. It is slightly hindered by both driveability and reliability compared to the other podium placers, but makes up for that with the lower scoring stats. Unfortunately that isn’t quite enough.

2nd Crowley Lavinia 425 @the-chowi

The Crowley Lavinia 425 comes 2nd with the highest reliability, the best fuel economy and by being the sportiest car in the test. It doesn’t rank well enough in other areas to overcome it’s lack of any kind of rear seats. Being 8200 more expensive to buy is in this case too much to justify the better looks compared to the 1st place finisher.

Winner Centara C527 @Edsel

The Centara has the 2nd best fuel economy with the lowest service cost, among with highest practicality thanks to being the only car with 2 full seats in the back. It has lower sportiness than the 2st placer, but makes up for that with being more comfortable. It is also the cheapest (45600) of the cars tested. It doesn’t score near the top in the lower rated priorities, but does well enough in the more meaningful stats, on top of having actual usable rear seats.

I did feel had a good entry this time around, but a win I wasn’t expecting at all! GG, ya’ll.

I do actually have a stock idea ready for next round. It is, however, another 2020 challenge; albeit for a very different segment in a very different market (and with aesthetics being a much lower priority). Still, if ya’ll don’t like/want another 2020 QFC, please lmk.

Regardless, I’ll put together some mules and have the rules up by the end of the weekend.
