Hmmm… not sure about the looks of this one… I feel like I’ve seen this before, just can’t put my finger on it…
Well that front looks pretty damn low, anyhow. Damn thing wouldn’t last a day in Boston, and those lights are damn well getting kicked by salt in the winter. It doesn’t really speak to me in general, honestly. -And the fuck is that rear wiper back there?? Never seen that before. Hmmm, is it at LEAST good to drive?? Man, I got no idea what this guy on the left is saying, lemme just see what owners say…
Let’s see… Not very comfortable… Basically no trunk space… As cramped as an apartment in Cambridge… -And like those apartments, its too damn much! I ain’t spending a DIME over my budget, especially if it’s something this compromised! I’ll keep looking, there’s gotta be better cars out there…
Binned for going over the price limit.
Sporting one of the lower drivability scores, along with only half decent stats in the lower star categories, makes this near the bottom of the table. It’s redeeming qualities being the alright fuel economy and one of the highest safety stats give enough score to not be at the rock bottom. Though that doesn’t matter with it being $300 over budget, resulting it in a bin.
Wow, I sure haven’t seen this car before, reminds me of a supercar of a similar name from 13 years ago! Only it’s… junior… Honestly, I am not quite sure how to feel about it. The front fascia is quite low, and while I do think the rear looks better, it’s still rather flat, maybe I could use it as a mousepad. I’m also not so sure about that random rear wiper that comes out of the roof. I do like the purple shade and the FT-1 body though, so there’s that. Also gotta love the random invisible body molding stuck on the side, lmao. Overall, could use some improvement in both details and design. - 1.5/10
The front is extremely low, with it looking extremely aggressive, and way too aggressive for this kind of challenge. The rear, composed of not much, is relatively inoffensive. I will note this is 1 of 3 submissions using the S650 Mustang/Jackal taillights. - 1.5/10

I mean, I guess it’s a little better than the last car… Although… Where are the mirrors? Are those an option??
…How’s it under the hood though? Hmmm… I mean, it’s pretty damn fast, don’t know if I can handle that though… And it’s apparently really loud, I don’t think my neighbors would like that… Nor the kids… Nor the wife… And appearently the gas mileage is a joke! I’d be burning through my whole comission just driving around the suburbs… Yeah, next!

It has one of the highest sportiness stats, but mid table drivability, a low design score, and the worst fuel economy in the challenge lead this to be near the bottom of the table, below the La Prestazione Junior. But binned for loudness score, being 50.5, 0.5 over the limit.
Much like George’s car, this is also rather flat (and quite purple too, only this time it’s matte). Bars aside, the headlights do seem to be at a more reasonable height, which I like, and the rear is an improvement as well, such as with the exhaust and diffuser. I’m not so sure about the side venting though, it feels tacked on and doesn’t really flow with the body. It also seems to be missing mirrors… hmm… maybe it uses cameras instead…? Overall, much like the previous car, it’s not the worst thing ever, but definitely needs work. - 2/10
And this is the 2nd submission using the S650 Mustang/Jackal taillights. Certainly a design, the rear looking oddly squashed, with a weird gap between the 3rd brake light and the spoiler. Along with the front not looking very modern. - 1.5/10

Okay… This one doesn’t look that bad, at least it’s cheaper. The hell is up with these paint colors though? Hmmm… Wait, what the FUCK? Does this thing come with speed holes from the factory?? Shits got as much holes as the old Windsor trucks around here! Those blacked out taillights are also definitely getting me pulled over on the Pike…
You know what, maybe they’ve got some weird advantage I don’t know about… Let’s check the Forums…
…Let’s see… Fuel economy’s good, at least… And… It’s drives like crap, and rides like crap too. Yeah, no, I ain’t risking getting in a ditch in the winter just for some money saved at the pump… And… What? A CD in this day and age?? A fuckin’ base model Kinaro has more than that! I guess this one ain’t it either…

With the lowest drivability, comfort, and the 3rd lowest prestige score in this challenge means this doesn’t go very far. Though decent stats in fuel economy and sportiness along with a mediocre design score keep it away from rock bottom. But this is binned for family year, being 2005, and HAVING A STANDARD CD entertainment option.
Wells, Wells, Wells… It’s first entry we got. This mystichrome’d car has an alright design, and it actually has a bit of body moulding. It even has seams over them, albeit not very clean up close. In fact, a lot of this car isn’t very clean when viewed up close, especially due to the holes caused by moulding. When you squint a little and view it further away, the design itself isn’t half bad, I think the front and wheels look good on it. However, I do believe the rear is rather… squished together? I don’t know, it makes the rear look rather tall, and speaking of the rear, it doesn’t seem to have indicators either… The hood scoop is also quite Subaru-esque, which I suppose fits this Turbo 4 sports car, and the carbon fibre bits are certainly a choice for a car of this class. Overall, not the worst, but could definitely use some cleaning up. - 5/10
The pearlescent paint is an odd choice, with the paint looking like a strange choice on this kind of car. Making it more of a muscle-y design could make it seem like a reference to TVR. Another thing detracting from the overall vehicle, is its lack of polish for automation fixture jank. Large cut outs in the body due to oversized molding, and waving edges on the black plastic which could’ve been solved/helped with patchwork. Finally starting with the front, the LED bars peaking through the glass of the headlight, and the indicator LEDs not leading into each other are a noticeable stain on an otherwise inoffensive design The rear has an odd choice of having blacked out taillights, which seem odd from the factory, unless if it was a dealer option or similary explained in lore. Still not my cup of tea regardless. - 3.5/10

Thanks for the feedback, especially with it being binned. I definitely wish the blacked out tail lights gave an advantage lol. As far as the family year being 2005, I fucked up for sure, I actually thought it was ok to leave that at '05 but make everything else '20 SMH!!! The infotainment shituation…I do remember clicking around trying to keep the price in the 30k realm…and I made that fatal flaw in the midst of that. As far as the holes being covered up with patchwork, that’s something I’d like to learn and attempt to master. I see the holes too, but I dont know how to cure it. My suspension tuning is really hit and miss…seems like a foul ball this time. Maybe I leaned too far into the sportiness realm, I’ll be honest, I wasnt even trippin too much off of comfort…in hindsight, I fucked up lol. I did take time to really make it good if not great though (suspension & car). Nevertheless, this was a great premise for a challenge and I had a lot of fun mildly re-designing (mildly) this car. There are some cool and very intriguing cars this round (@Capri78 )…I wish you all luck, and may the best car win!!
Some real-life manufacturers are able to get away with using a 15-20-year-old engine family (I’m looking at you, VW EA888), but in-game, a newer engine family is generally preferable. Besides, the standard CD entertainment option is available from 1998 (assuming 0 interior techpool points are assigned - adding positive techpool to this field makes it available sooner), which makes it horribly outdated as early as the 2010s even on lower-end cars (a standard infotainment kit would be a more logical option for that era).
Thanks to the power of Edgar (we love you Edgar) I think that everyone so far called it wrong…or just talked about another also true thing.
Edgar’s comment that this hasn’t had chassis change in 21 years implies to me that Model year of car is 2005.
Now I’m thinking and I think closest thing to that nowadays might be Nissan 400Z. This is providing it uses platform of 370Z or modification of it and for 370Z I’m pretty sure it’s revised 350Z.
“Closest” here still means going through some extensive rework of platform at least twice, so it would have been genuine realism problem to some extent.
Family is, yes, exactly what you point out here. VW and it’s 2.0 turbocharged inline 4 are far from only culprits that might meet criteria. However, nothing in review indicates Wells went down that route as well here…although they could have did so ofc.
Just wanted to bring out the cheap version to quickly enter the challenge. Design is just not at all my forte.

Np! I think even binned cars deserve some kind of review/feedback, even tho they’re disqualified. Usually what I do to fix tearing is use those square patch fixtures under body moulding, put them over the hole, and then very slightly adjust its 2D offset if I need to. I believe there’s some mods that help with this too (Dogtape and Patchwork+ iirc)
That’s a tip I tried myself, and it worked every single time.

This is a surprisingly heavy car, in fact, it’s the heaviest of the entries, being ~1,745 kg. This is also one of the two entries to use ITBs and a turbocharger, which is an interesting choice you don’t really see made today. The engine itself is fairly reliable, but when paired to the rest of the car, seemed to have resulted in a 2nd to last reliability score, which when combined with the highest service costs here and the lowest comfort of the qualifying entries, doesn’t bring it very far.
This is well… certainly a design… This thing is pretty flat, and might have the least fixtures here, at just 14. The front is simplistic, with the only moulding to see being… oh my God is that LOWER FASCIA 104
The staple fixture of new Automation players… Even I used to use it once… shudders… The side is also basically just a door handle and indicator fixture stuck on the base body, with the only body lines coming from said body. Hey new drinking game dropped, take a shot whenever I say “body” or “flat”! Those mirrors are certainly a choice too, and look quite weird with the way they just… erect from the side like that, they’re kind of high. The rear is quite unusual as well, featuring a lightbar which doesn’t even go with the flow of the base body, with 2… reflectors, I think(?), tacked on, and a vanilla diffuser fixture. It doesn’t even feature a plate holder moulding! The little center exhaust it pretty dinky too, which I find funny. But yes, overall, this could very much use some design improvements, and definitely some nicer wheel fitment as well. - 1/10
There it is… the fabled Lower Fascia 104… Jokes aside, I do quite like the concept the front is going for, very Kia if they made a Miata/MX-5. Though the rear is a different story. Not very good looking… A oddly proportioned and placed light bar, rear reflectors but no 3rd brake light, and a license plate slapped on. The diffuser certainly is something… with the exhaust slapped in the middle for some reason. - 1/10
Car 2 - Contour ASC4 (@HyperMud)
Hmmm… I mean okay, getting a bit of an old-school vibe, kind of reminds me of the stuff my son would make in GTA… Not sure how the HOA would feel about having this on my lawn either… And that cyan sure is somethin’ too…
…Oh wow, over 400 horse from just 4 cylinders?? And RWD too? Shit, that’s packing a punch, was this some kind of tuner from the factory?
I mean, it’s decently fast, and… Well would you look at that, the tuner car drives like one too, and doesn’t have much space in the rear. Yeah, I can probably take this off the shortlist.

Despite looking like a souped-up muscle car from some years ago, this manages to net one of the lowest sportieness stats in the challenge, with 2nd to last drivability, and the 2nd highest service costs. The engine has something worth noting too, that being it’s one of the 2 cars here that use both ITBs and a turbocharger. A rather unique setup you don’t see much of these days, but it is reminiscent of some of the turboed Nissan RB engines, which I suppose makes sense for something so tuner-inspired. Not sure if that quite worked out for it though…
S550 Mustang… Is that you? This thing looks like it came fresh outta Los Santos customs, complete with a massive, low-hanging body kit plastered on it. You wouldn’t really think this came from the factory like this, and yet it did. That bright blue is certainly a color choice, and I suppose fits the theme of this obnoxious “tuner-muscle” car. It’s not the worst looking thing there is, but it is rather old looking for 2026, kind of like Cyder’s entry. I’m not too keen on that random black bar going down the doors, and that weird, low-res grille texture featured on the 3D bumpers though, I feel like even the default hex grille would have made it better. The wheels are certainly a choice too, and also give off the “tuned” vibe. Overall, it’s not the worst design ever, but it could use some work. - 5/10
WOW, a third submission using the S650 Mustang/Jackal taillights. Putting that aside, the car itself doesn’t look bad per se buttt… it looks more like a modified JDM car rather than a brand new car from the factory. There’s no real offensive bits of it, but it doesn’t really fit modern car design. My only other problem with it, though a minor one, is the use of concept plates on it. - 2.5/10

Ooh… Okay okay, maybe we’re getting somewhere now! This actually looks like something I’d want to be caught driving in, I like the lights too…
Does it perform how it looks though? Let’s see… Oh my god… A complex and hard-to-fix turbo setup that’ll definitely eat into my payroll, and a not-so-great driving experience… Man what the hell, I thought the Japanese were all about balanced driving and being easy to fix, did they let an intern engineer this or what??
Damn shame too, I lked how it looked… I do have a lot of cars left though, NEXT!

Oh boy, where to start… Well first off, it’s 2nd to last in both drivability and sportiness. Other stats wise, it has no real redeeming qualities with Fuel Economy being its best stat, and even then, it’s only in the ~66th percentile. Moving onto the engineering choices, there is a very interesting one… With both an iron block and iron head is probably the strangest engineering choice in this whole challenge. Paired with a compound turbo, the only one of its kind in this challenge as well, makes this a very different car from its peers. But perhaps not in the best way…
Well, it’s certainly a sports car. It’s got a very Supra-esque shape, with its MASSIVE hood and with what seems to be a double-bubbled roof. I find the headlights to be rather interesting, with the dual strips on the top part of the car reminding me of Zeekr. The taillights are also pretty cool, with their swooping LEDs and the lettering being integrated. I also like the little touches added, such as the rear roof spoiler, parking sensors, and what I believe are cameras(?). What I’m not so much of a fan of is the vent going right at the end of the body before the rear wheel, it almost looks like it’s clipping through, and is just kind of messy. There’s also a small gripe I have with the sharknose front, being that is looks like it has no chin when viewed directly from the side. Overall, it’s an inoffensive design, and certainly not a bad one. The interior looks sweet though, too bad we’re only judging the exteriors. (Now I know we said interiors wouldn’t be judged, but those that stand out to me WILL get at least a comment, with no extra design points though.) - 7/10
Sporting my one of my favorite headlight designs in this challenge is the Kurosake J-Sport, and the rear taillights look nice and 2026, but unfortunately it’s let down by well… everything else about the car. The side cutout with it cutting into the fender and having it be an extremely dark grille fixture makes it seem like poor design. Having it be a lighter gray, or a default automation grille material could’ve made it look more intentional. The rest of the design is inoffensive, and my only other issue with it, is that I wish the rear taillight glass was more opaque, rather than being completely see through. I do think the front looks a bit weirdly slopped, and a front lip or splitter could’ve made it look a lot better. - 7/10

Ooh, this one’s American. I like it. Although I do feel like this design’s been around for much longer… If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, I guess?
Well anyways, I wonder if it’s got the chops to support its old-school muscle look… Hmmm… A 3.5L V6… AWD… Not bad… Easy to drive… Fucking finally… And it’s got an alright price too.
Well thank god it ain’t no death trap like the other ones, although it does kind of leave some things to be desired… Doesn’t feel as new and exciting, y’know? Kinda like a Starter Home. I mean, I like it, but there’s more left in this list, so I could keep going…

This old-school entry is a bit of a mixed bag. It’s drivability is fairly decent, likely due to its AWD, and yet it’s rather flat in sportieness, being on the lower and of the entries. It’s 3.5L V6 is a safe and realistic choice of engine, and on the higher end of reliability, being similar to a 3.6 Pentastar or a 3.5 Duratech. It’s also one of the few cars here that use steel for its body panels, although they are at least treated (unlike a certain good looking car in the next round…), and makes sense considering the Dodge-esque “we just kept making a car from 10 years ago” look. It’s also the slowest one to 60 mph, taking 7 seconds to get up to speed.
Where have I seen this car before… Hmmm… Hey, isn’t this thing from like, 2013? I think this base model muscle brick looks pretty decent, and very, VERY reminiscent of a certain real car of this “we just took a car we designed 10 years ago and added LEDs” genre. I like the little touches added throughout the car, such as the badging on the side and the grille bars. The design is generally pretty flat though, although I can’t be too bummed about it in this case given the type of car this is. Overall, another solid entry, but could use some work in the details and depth. The stuff you put in the interior is pretty fuckin’ funny tho

Hmm… hosting a totally never before seen design is the Intimidator. Starting with the front, its lack of depth and molding seen on the rest of the car stand out, along with its bland color, which doesn’t help the front either. The rear continues this issue, but to a smaller degree, and the more stand out flaw of the rear is the relatively aged-looking taillights. - 4.5/10
Car 5 - Zandvoort ZGT (@the-chowi)
DAMN! Now THAT looks new and exciting! Shit, it looks good even in Country Club tan! I have high hopes for this, this better be good…
Alright, let’s see… Decent power, good motor… Fun to drive… And pretty damn comfortable too! I bet the kids will love it too! Maybe it could do with a little more room inside, but I’d say it’s a worthy compromise…
And hey, it’s got MA plates, they’ve gotta have a dealer here too! Y’know what, fuck it! I’ll go check it out! Just gonna write it in my reminders for next week…
Makes it to the Finals.
Quite a weapon, this car is. It’s got the highest sportiness stat of the qualifying cars, likely due to its smooth, BMW-esque I6 with a Twin-Scroll turbo, and RWD setup. Despite the RWD though, it manages to net a respectable drivability score.
Damn, this is clean, I really like this. It’s even got MA plates! The front is smooth, yet sporty, and the gap between the top and bottom portions of the front almost make it look like an EV, which is cool, in my opinion. There also isn’t much tearing to see either! The tan is certainly a choice, although to be fair, this leans more into the “baby GT car” than the “base model of a hardcore sports car” vibe, so a more subdued color fits. I quite like the side too, the massive moulding and vent look pretty good and clean, and the use of exhaust cutouts on the fenders is creative. Moving onto the rear, I wasn’t too sure about the C7 corvette lights ar first, but looking at it more, I’d say it works well, and the black bar is a nice touch too, very Mustang-esque. The rear portion with the diffuser and exhaust is even better though, and even matches the front with its side vents and fins. Overall, this is a lovely and clean design, witha a good amount of depth too. - 10/10
Toyota, is that you? I’m not sure about the choice of tan for a car in this market; it sure is unique, but I do wonder if a more normal color would fit it better and make it pop. But the tan accents over the rest of the car do look nice. The front looks great, and my only minor gripe is that the front fascia is a touch too low for my taste. The C7 taillights at the rear had me skeptical for a bit, though I did come around to it, as I especially like the black plastic making a nice contrast. - 9/10

…Alright, one car considered at least, but I got a good feeling there’s still more… Ooh, this one ain’t look half bad either… Definitely got a modern look to it, I’ll give it that… Wheels make it look like it skipped leg day though…
Oh well, I suppose wheels can be changed… Won’t change no engine though, so I hope it’s good in that department… Let’s see…
Alright… It rides well… The comfort’s good, that’s nice… Good motor, gotta have it… And pretty safe with some good gas mileage… Hey, it ain’t bad! But I do feel like it’s just another version of that car I just viewed… I mean, it’s a little cheaper, but I think an extra 500 is worth it for the looks of that other one.

Speaking of BMW-esque, is the Rocket Andromeda. It’s a rather well-rounded car that scores decently high, such as by having the 3rd best sportiness and alright drivability. It also has an interesting engine, that being a rather small, 2.0L I6 Turbo that revs to 9,200 RPM, which when combined with the RWD and DCT, might explain the high-tier sportiness. It also gets good fuel economy, highest of the 6-cylinders. Too bad it’s bogged down by its competition and styling, causing this otherwise promising entry to fall just short of the top 5.
Hmmm… Have I seen this car before? Looks like some kind of… neue klasse of car (say that again). I do generally like it though, and it’s certainly an improvement over the two entries that preceded it (this car was the 3rd one submitted to this challenge), and I quite like the work done with the lighting. The design is very angular, much like the car I believe it’s based on, although I do think the body itself looks a little round for such a design… maybe some different wheels and a 3D roof would be able to remedy some that, but those are rather finicky to do. This also generally has more depth on both the front and rear, although I do think that the side could have used some body moulding, as it’s basically just the base body with a door handle and indicator. Overall a solid effort, but could use some detailing in the places where it matters. - 7.5/10
Can’t put my finger on if I’ve seen this sort of design before… But looking past that, the front looks nice, though I wish there were DRLs on the front, but no other comments. The rear is very long and thin, and I wish there was more of a rounded shape, or additions beyond the straight line. My only other comment on the styling, was the oddly small wheels for a modern sports car. the 18" wheels look out of place on something otherwise sporty designed. Use of ATS could’ve helped with making the wheels larger without sacrificing stats. - 6.5/10

My thoughts on the eliminations:
On its own, that would’ve raised suspicions among the clients.
An iron block is still quite common today, but combining one with an iron head in 2020 or later simply adds unnecessary weight.
That would’ve been acceptable 20-30 years ago, but much less so today.
Yeah it doesn’t make much sense to me to limit model or family year. Some other examples - the Porsche air-cooled flat-6 would be the same family for nearly 30 years, the Gen 1-2 and Gen 3-5 Chevrolet small blocks and the Chevrolet big-block each ran for 20+ years, etc. As for platforms, it isn’t hard to see the Corolla E60, E70 and AE85/AE86 as one continued “model”, as arguably would the GM Alpha cars (10+years) and the Porsche 924/944/968 (19 years).
