[RESULTS POSTED!] 4 Cylinders 4 Fun: A Local Short Track Racing Challenge!

Here’s the scenario…

You’re a local race fan looking to dip your toes into the world of pavement short oval racing. The problem is, you don’t have the money to build anything really expensive; certainly nothing like a late model or a modified. No, you’re limited to the four-cylinder class at the bottom of the ticket. What do you build?

RULES OF COMPETITION
Your goal is to take one of your front-engine, front-wheel-drive, four-cylinder economy cars and build it into an inexpensive Saturday night short track oval racer. Starting from August 7th, 12pm US Central Time, you’ll have until August 28th, 12pm US Central Time to submit your entry. Cars will be judged based on the following: Freedom Factory laptime in BeamNG.drive (0-10 pts; only the top 10 cars by laptime will receive points, and each car will have five laps to set its best time; I will be running these laps myself), interior detail (10 pts), realism (as in, “would you see a car like this actually competing at a Saturday night short track?”) (10 pts), livery (5 pts), and exterior detail (5 pts). There is no upper fixture limit, so feel free to go crazy with the inside and the livery!

Note: Only the race car will be judged; the stock version is only there to check for rules compliance. You don’t have to put any effort into the stock version’s interior if you don’t want to, but I’d suggest trying to make the outside look as good as possible since there’s not much you can do to change the race car’s looks.

Required and optional modifications

  • Required interior elements: Six-point rollcage with three horizontal bars against the front doors, racing seat, steering wheel, pedals, dashboard. (Race display and/or working gauges are optional since these parts are often removed for weight savings in real life. Additionally, the dashboard doesn’t have to resemble the stock version and can be replaced with a lighter and more race-looking option)

  • No variable valve timing or variable valve lift allowed, even if on the stock version (this is to reflect that most short tracks require such systems to be disabled to be fair to engines without them)
  • Catalytic converters and mufflers are optional
  • No emissions standards; just as long as it doesn’t blow smoke going around the track after warming up (I’ll let you know if it does)
  • No bypass valves
  • All header, intake, and exhaust types are allowed
  • May switch to manual transmission if stock is automatic
  • Transmission gear ratios and number of gears must remain entirely stock

  • Any alignment settings are allowed

ADDITIONAL MENTIONS
Although these may not influence the results, additional shoutouts will be awarded for best livery, best story/writeup, and best final submission post. So get creative, folks!

SUBMISSION

  • All final submissions must be marked with [FINAL] (Car name) at the top of the post
  • Posts must contain a description of the car and at least four images: one of the stock version’s exterior, one of the race car’s exterior, one of the stock version’s interior, and one of the race car’s interior, though additional beauty shots are 100% encouraged
  • You must DM both the stock version’s and the race version’s Automation-exported .car files to me personally; I’ll then export the race version to BeamNG on my end for the track test. Although only the race car will be judged, the stock version’s .car is there to determine if the race car’s mods fall within the rules. Please do not submit already-exported BeamNG .zip files or .pc configuration files for Beam, as they will be ignored.
  • Race version must include (4C4F) in the trim name and the .car file’s name
  • You may submit your .car files to me up to two times prior to your final submission to check for rules compliance. However, you must submit a .car file to me after posting your final entry in this thread; this will be considered your entry and may not be changed again
  • Noncompliant cars may be docked points if infractions are minor or disqualified entirely for major infractions
  • This challenge takes place on the Al Rilma open alpha version of the game.

And now, some pics for inspiration!

If you really want to enforce this, variable valve lift should not be permitted, either.

Added! Thanks for the suggestion

so will we be judged on street and race trim? (i have a little trouble with retaining or processing stuff i read sorry)

Only the race trim will be judged, but the street trim is required to judge if the race car’s modifications are legal and to ensure no one builds straight-up homologation specials for what’s supposed to be an entry-level grassroots racing class. You don’t have to put any effort into the street trim’s interior, but I would definitely suggest doing your best on the exterior since that’s going to remain basically unchanged for the race car aside from the required and optional fixtures listed in the rules

After some feedback, I’ve removed the “no VTEC” requirement for the road car’s engine and kept it for the race car with a clarification for the reasoning: most short tracks require VTEC and similar systems to be disabled to be fair to engines that don’t have them

Is there any rulings on the use of negative quality? And will this challenge be using the default +5 techpool?

Re: Negative quality - Good point! I’ll say min quality is -5 to allow some wiggle room for budget. As far as techpool, I don’t really think about that, so +5 sounds fine. I’ll go ahead and add those to the rules

Went through and organized the rules for you guys because they were a bit of a mess before lol. Let me know if you have any feedback or questions regarding the rules! But if not, this should be the finalized ruleset, so you guys should be A-OK to get started on your builds if you haven’t already

No age limit? Just has to be older than 2010?

Eeyup! Though if you plan to max out the realism, I wouldn’t go any lower than 1990 or so. You might occasionally see something from the '80s in one of these races, but it’s exceptionally rare. Still, though, you’re more than welcome to enter anything older than that since these classes don’t have older age limits irl

so The 1899 Sutton Autocar isnt out of the question?

Technically no XDD But I’d imagine the tech officials would have a heart attack if they saw it and try to find anything at all to get it on.

…That reminds me, I need to specify the max displacement. It shall be 2.2L for the stock and 2.3 for the race because people often bore and stroke their engines in these classes, and I believe some of them also allow that kind of thing explicitly in the rules

What sort of interior seating and entertainment does the race variant need? can it all be removed and just one seat?

Actually you haven’t mentioned fuel type or emissions rules either

Also what can be changed engine wise from the stock car? can all the internals be changed and full race intake and exhaust? it doesn’t mention this in the rules

All added. Thanks for letting me know!

If anyone has any rules changes or requests for clarification, I’d appreciate if you could get them in ASAP! I plan to freeze the rules tomorrow so people can get building and try to have something already in the works by the time submissions open. Thanks!

steel only rims? and since were doing dirt track shouldn’t we use rally tyres?

Ye, steel wheels. And we’re not doing dirt track; the Freedom Factory is paved, so we’re running semislicks

What exactly do you mean by offset must be the same front and rear? There are bodies that have the rear wheels dramatically set inboard by default, so I usually have to push them out just to make the car look normal.

Are you talking about the sidewall measurement?

No, the rim offset as displayed in the UI. But I should probably change it to say that the outer edges of the front and rear tires must be visually aligned with each other. Thanks for the suggestion!
