1987-1994 Taimania Keizai Mk. II (Design Update)

When the 80s hit Taimania was at a real struggle to stay known. With their competitors Kadett & Blaire getting on top with cheaper/better quality vehicles. Taimania started a plan to make higher-quality cars, than what they did previously from 75-86. They came up with the Keizai Mk.II, a small compact liftback & 3-door hatch.

The Keizai released in late 1986 made originally as a step up from the original Mk. 1 and a rival of the Albatross and Beat. They focused on getting good drivability with good towing/load capacity with a cheaper engine, coupled that with a little simplistic look gave the car a good reputation and giving a fair competition to the Albatross and Beat.

1988-1992 Taimania Keizai Hatchy Mk. 1

The Hatchy is the worse looking yet more higher quality version of the Keizai. This one was the most advertised out of the two. It didn’t work as well as planned with the Hatchy only selling 1,792,450 units for its generation, unlike the liftback which sold 3,120.000 in its generation, though for it’s the second generation they were for conservative with the advertisements. In all the Keizai would fail to beat the Beat (pun intended) and Albatross.

The Keizai only came in two trims. . .

Sub-100 horsepower on the top trim was par for the course in the late '80s/early '90s. Even so, a hot hatch version would have been welcome.

I’m deciding on whether I want to make a rally car version or not, but I gotta finish some things before I do that so if I do decide it might be a bit later. Though to be honest the Hatchy does do pretty decent on Beam, but I think it might be do to it’s relatively small size making it look faster.

1952-1961 Taimania Zed Mk. I

The Zed was the first car Hanaki and his friends ever designed, though he held it back in favor of other vehicles until a small budget family car would be needed in the brand, and by this time Hanaki never really could think of a name for the car…so he just went with Zeddo. That being Zed in Japanese…

The Zed’s designing stood out among the Chita, Oki, Mika, and Monetsu. That being it was the first car designed by Hanaki and that it also had sort of different design cues making it look a little unique from the others. Since the war had ended 7 years prior and people started making babies ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). Family cars and pickup trucks were all the rage, so the Zed and Oki quickly became the company’s top seller with a total of 1,415,347 units sold in its first 4 years making it Taimania’s 2nd most quickly sold and most iconic car.

1952 Taimania Zed/Zeddo Orbit View

1950-1961 Taimania Mika Mk.1 (REMASTERED)

The Mika was released on November 14th, 1950 making it Taimania’s first and one of Taimania’s most rare cars with 468 models still driving. The Mika was (now is) a small 2 or 4 door sedan before becoming a small coupe in 1962. It was a staple of early Japanese civilian cars and is a common collectors car of many who seek it.

The Mika was an oddball to your average post-war Japanese citizen in 1950. It was different. It was a small 2 or 4 door sedan made for people who did not have a lot of money. It was rugged, light, cheap, and somewhat comfortable…at least…in 1950, and people instantly jumped onto this new trend of small affordable cars for the masses with the Mika being the successful startup to the company that Hanaki wished for. Another reason for its easy startup was that there wasn’t much competition in 1950, unlike today where the Mika struggles in most markets.

A V6 of that size is never going to be very refined, especially if it has a 90-degree bank angle. And the quadruple fog lights are overkill in my view, while the license plate bracket belongs in the vast expanse of blank space at the rear. The rest of the car isn’t too bad aesthetically, though.

2021 Taimania Hatchy Mk. VI

In partnership with Itachi Motors by @Holts we present the Itachi Zinc and the Taimania Hatchy.

The Itachi designed Hatchback body presents bold and sleek lines with a hint of sportiness for the urban roads. The Hatchy inclused a sunroof as standard with the all new Pet Ventilation System for those furry little friends that need to stay in your car. Fitted with high tech Itachi LED Headlights the Hatchy makes sure you can see in the dark. The Hatchy also comes in a multitude of vibrant and colorful colors making for an exciting little car in a road of greys, whites, & blacks. Made to compete alongside the Kadett Beat and other urban hatchbacks the Hatchy and the Zinc make for fair competitors.

Taimania EV Technology

A new EV model is offered on the Hatchy for the 2021 model year. Giving you a 210 mile range. The EV model is the most tech savvy as most EV cars would be with the Auto Parking System and Accident Prevention being offered. The eco-friendly and definitely not made by lithium which in turn makes more polution batteries offer you a soft quiet and fairly quick ride making sure you get there on one charge. The EV model will be offered in June 2020.

Sportiness

Obviously it wouldn’t be an urban hot hatch without a schporty model. The clever engineers at Itachi were able to make the Hatchy and the Zinc quick little cars while keeping a soft and comfortable urban ride did i mention this is an urban car?. Because performance is Taimania’s biggest concern apart from keeping the customer happy. So these little cars can be quick and indeed they are. Even though the Zinc is the slower of the two. They both have a light and quick feel to them. All models except the EV will be offered with Manuals and traditional Handbrakes so if you want to rip it out in your local Publix you can.

The Hatchy will be available in 4 trims. . .

The AT15E is a 1.5l turbocharged engine. That’s what the 15 mean AT15E mean “Affordable Turbocharged 1.5l economical”. But anyways, what happened to the standard gas milage? In that case, you could have kept the engine the standard 1.5l since it makes same power instead of loosing 10+ MPG. But taimanias version of the zinc is not bad at all

2021 Taimania Chita/ST36 Mk. XII (Repost)

The all new Chita introduces a bugeye retro design mixed with simple sporty style and lightweight performance for a relatively cheap price. Our designers have designed this retro sports coupe for it’s 12th Generation celebrating 70 years of production.

Sporty Design

The Chita (ST36 in Asian markets) gives for a nice sporty look with a feeling of affordability. With sleek lines and design cues from the Mika, The Chita offers quite a lot for it’s simple yet sexy styling. The semi-monotaillights wrap around the back and to the side giving a modern sporty look that flows with the body lines. The massive bugeye headlights offer more style and with our new LED technology offer you a bright ride in the darkest of environments. The side indicators act as both the side flare and side indicators and holds the Mk. 12 badging.

Convertibles

The all new Chita is also offered in a convertible variant. With the HE and HS trim levels. This offers slightly better performance with the added airflow to your face. The HE and HS Cabrio variants will be offered in the U.S market in Fall 2020 starting at $22,400.00

Performance

As you’ve heard us mention multiple times in this showcase. The Chita/ST36 is an entry level sports car (Made to rival against other popular models such as the Quezon SR Series by @variationofvariables for example), and we didn’t hold back with the new Chita. With the Chita being available with an RSi model. Adding a Turbocharged 3.0L I6 making 364hp and pushing it’s 0-60 to 3.7 seconds. Adding a lighter chassis adding a lighter and faster ride.

The 2021 Chita comes in 6 trims. . .

1990-1996 Taimania Keijidosha Mk. VI

1990 rolls around and Taimania has finally gotten back onto their feet. With this new found money from the popular Keizai. They started to update older vehicles. One of them being the Keijidosha. Which by 1990 was struggling to be sold despite the kei market’s popularity. So for 1990 it was completely refreshed. With all new technology and better performance.

It was fuel efficient, sporty, and most importantly cheap. It had more modern styling with bugeye headlights that flow with the simple styling. The Keijidosha was revealed at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show with critical acclaim. It’s small styling and the speed of it’s Turbo model caught the eyes of many. It was released in late 1989 and sold rapidly. Everywhere you looked there was at least one Keijidosha. In 1991 there were rumors a 5 door model would be released for 1992, but was later dismissed. With it’s 660cc I3 made 61 and 63lb-ft horsepower and pushed 0-60 to 11 seconds with the base model which was fairly good for an engine of the size. The reasoning for it’s modest speed despite the low power? It’s lightweight body. At only 1500lbs it was a fairly light car all things considered.

The lightweight body plus the Turbocharged I3 made for a good sport model. The Keijidosha Turbo I3 5MT came with a 660cc Turbocharged I3 making 83hp and 69 lb-ft that with the light body made 0-60 in 8 seconds. The Keijidosha would eventually get updated in 1996 and would tone down the weirdness of the Mk. VI Keijidosha.

The 1990 Keijidosha came in 3 models. . .

2019 Taimania Keijidosha Offland Mk. II

Introduction

The Offland comes back for it’s second generation with a facelifted design and better performance from it’s previous generation. The Offland comes with the standard on all kei cars 660cc engine (with a turbocharger) which gives the Offland fair performance and a rugged feel. Looking at the design it’s the traditional simple designing that Taimania’s have had for since the company began in 1950. With the 4X coming with AWD and is able to pull a caravan trailer or a 1990 Keijidosha on a trailer. The Offland also comes with some of the latest bells and whistles for the price but for weight purposes somethings had to be left out like Lane Keep Assist and the Blind Spot Warning System.

Interior

Moving on to the interior of the Keijidosha Offland we see it had body colored accents with the cozy little manual. A DCT is offered on the HE and 4X so look out for that. The Offland finally introduced an infotainment system with the small 8" Infotainment system which has the basics on it such as music, backup camera, Apple Carplay, etc. And the soft cloth seats eases the ride while retaining the rugged look.

Performance

The Keijidosha Offland isn’t the best when it comes to performance, but we’d like to talk about it. With the Offland coming with an EcoTurbo I3 and Twin-Turbocharged I3 producing up to 124hp and 96lb-ft of torgue, and the Offland is fairly fuel efficient as well with it’s highest MPG rating being 40 miles per gallon (US) and it’s lowest being 36. All in all the Keijidosha Offland Mk. II is fit for it’s second generation and will release on July 10th 2019.

1996-2002 Taimania Mika Mk. VII

Taimania was pretty confused after the bubble car trend of the early 90s in Japan had finally faded away. So the designers took to the drawing board and in late 1995 the seventh-generation Mika was unveiled to the world, with new sleek styling, a boxier and slightly larger appearance, and all the latest tech that was offered for a car in its price range. It wouldn't be until 2004 when Taimania had finally stepped back onto their feet but the Mika was a good start alongside the release of their first full-size non-offroad SUV the Borunda and the updated S-Series lineup. The seventh-generation Mika had 3 body styles, a coupe, convertible, and sedan which was only available in Asian markets. The Mika came standard with a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine which made 38-40 mpg and pushed out 103hp and 110lb-ft which was pretty good for its time. In 1998 more than 500,000 Mika convertibles had to be recalled to add a rollbar due to legality issues and an average death rate of 5 per 50, Mika Convertibles driven.

Later in 2000 the Mika received a facelift along with the 50th Anniversary Edition model which was available for only 10 months, it was the only Mika model to be available with a turbocharged 2.0L I6 that pushed 171hp and 166lb-ft which ups its value considering only 3,566 50th Edition Mikas were ever sold. The facelifted Mika brought a large lower and upper grille compared to the pre-facelift's smaller grilles and had updated halogen lights that were more circular and thinner. Moving to the technology of the Mika, it came standard with ABS and a CD/Cassette stereo which was a surprising feature for a basic subcompact from the 90s, the Mika came standard with both driver and passenger-side airbags and had retracting seatbelts for better stability in an accident but if you were able to get a DES or DSR model Mika then you would be lucky enough to have the option of side impact airbags only available in the coupe and sedan models. The Mika would later get updated in 2003 dropping the convertible until 2015.

2019 Taimania Mika Mk. XI

All new for 2019, Taimania presents the eleventh generation Mika with updated sleek styling, more technology, and an array of new features. Unveiled at the 2018 Tokyo Motor Show the Mika brings back the Inline 6 with the RSi6 model being reintroduced after its highly controversial exit in 2007. New hybrid options are available as well with a modified version of the standard 1.8L 4-cylinder engine. In terms of new tech options, the Mika has it all with some new standard features being Automatic Folding Mirrors, Highway Lane Assist (in certain models), and an 8" touch screen display with an optional controller in the center console. For optional features, the Mika offers Digital Gauges, Blind Spot Warning Cameras (only available with Digital Gauges), Taimania's new Self Parking System, a 10" touch screen display with an optional controller in the center console, and full LED Headlights.

Feel the Need for Speed

The all-new RSi6 model offers a roaring 2.5L turbocharged I6 producing 278hp and piercing 0-60 time of 5.1 seconds, a new record for the iconic subcompact. in terms of visual changes the RSi6 gets are standard full LED Headlights, a large spoiler for downforce, 18" rims as opposed to the 16" rims of lower-trim models, a front lip, piano-black trimming, and a standard 10" display. In 2022 the Mika is said to get a facelift as well as new features that have not yet been confirmed. And with a base, MSRP of $17,550 (USD) the Mika is a perfect blend of a sporty city car and a small family car capable of being both in one package.

Wut??
Also that engine is pretty much form over function, though I admit, it gets quite impressive acceleration. FWD, RWD, AWD?

It’s actually more of a sport compact in its top-spec trim, but a six in a world of fours is guaranteed to stand out.

I6
subcompact

Yes yes ik it is a strange pair but it is quite functional and even handles pretty well (when tested in beam)

I didn’t know it’d be considered a sport compact, very interesting. But also yes the i6 has been a signature engine of the Mika since the mid-70s when the DSR was introduced (now known as the RSi trim level) so while every other model of the Mika has the basic 4-cylinder, the RSi will always keep its i6
