In 1981 Xfader Motors was in trouble. Lada bought a 35% stake in Xfader Motors, took the Riva sedan made an in 1982 made a sports car.
The Sportivnyy by LADA [sports in Russian]
‘Chassis made by Italy’s #1 car maker!’ Yes if a 1960’s FIAT 124 platform sounds like an exciting sports car for the 80’s, your lying.
It got a Fun to Drive rating of 0.1.
It had a high reliability rating but the Soviet steel was more like tissue paper, so these are very rare. And a $20,000 [twice as much a it cost to make] in 2014 dollars sounds good, check the performance.
Lets see it compared to a rival FIAT Spider at the same price.
HP 40, FIAT 80
MPG 18, FIAT 22
0-60 31.5, FIAT 9.0
All with a 2:7:70 time around the Top Gear track.
Made the car for this post.
Thought VW saying ‘We know you guys are making an unpopular minivan, we want to do that too.’ to Chrysler. was bad check out the Das Trabi Sport, or in German Das Trabi Sportart. Trabant got in touch with LADA and got to work on the Das Trabi Sport. If you didn’t like that you got the Trabi HyperSport kit car.
As always I will compare 2 similarly priced cars of the period of 1983, an Alfa Spider, and a Porsche 924.And the price 3x what it cost to make $26,592 in 2014 dollars.
I thought it’d be my turn to embarrass myself with one of my not-so-great cars: the Higashi-Toyoko Spirit. Originally commissioned by motorcycle maker Higashi, it uses their revvy 1000cc all-aluminium inline 4 which is good for 60 horsepower and with the redline bumped up to 7700 rpm. Sounds like something the average teenager would love, right? WRONG! Toyoko mated it to a heavy fwd hatchback and thus spoiled what potential the engine had. 0-60? Almost 13 seconds. Top speed? Just about 90. Gas mileage? Barely breaking 31 MPG. Even the turbocharged model couldn’t get out of its own way if it tried to. Needless to say, the model never hit showroom floors and was instead scrapped in favor of an RWD sports coupé. Aside from the obvious improvements in performance and fun-factor, the Sprint, as it was named, also had the advantage of not looking like this:
Heh, that’s pretty nice; it reminds me of those old kit cars that were sold in the 80’s, except that most of them had even more anemic engines. Say, would you mind selling me one of those beauties (i.e. posting the .lua)? I’d really like to see how it would go with something like a turbocharged Rover V8 behind the seats
Do you reminisce about the 80’s? No? Well, what’s wrong with you? Oh. You were born in the 90’s. Pansy. You must like air bags and cd players and all that other useless junk.
Let’s take a trip down memory lane, shall we? Maybe to something your parents drove.
How about the 1983 Kiriminas?
Yeah, this epitomizes everything about cheap 80’s cars. Look at that boxy styling. Just look at it. Sitting on those sleek 155mm tires. Go head. Pop the hood. Yeah, you like that wheezy 2-barrel carburetor? I bet you love those sexy pushrods, too. They were all the rage in the 80’s. Just sitting there, pushing valves all day long. Now for the bitchin’ stereo. What do you mean how do you tune it? That’s what the knob is for. Just fiddle with it till the static is gone. What do you mean you don’t know what static is?
You know, it’s all about the horsepower for you kids these days, isn’t it? Even on a cheap car. 130 isn’t enough. Well let me show you what people used to have to get by on. Check out this dyno pull here. 62 horses. Yeah, we got around. You just had to be patient. I know that’s a concept for you. Hey, where are you going? Get back here. I’m not done… ah, screw it.
Performance stats:
Top speed 97 mph
0-100kph 13.0 seconds
