The "guess-what-car" game 2

No clue at all. Some sort of weird Cadillac concept?

Lada Peter Turbo

I had to google this one, in three different languages no less (merci french google). This round was tough, good game.

Correct!

Probably the craziest looking car I’ve seen in a looong time. I want 1% of whatever they were smoking/drinking

Mazda Lantis/323F?

Veeeeeery similar looking, might not be right though.

Saab EV1

correct!

2+2 concept based on a mid 80s 900 turbo 16. This was one of the cars featured in Back to the Future II as future flying taxis.

Proton Satria?

Damn :joy: Technically the one on the picture is a Mitsubishi Colt, but yeah same thing, so you’re right. Your turn then!

And I hoped to use a slightly misdirecting V6 hint…

The contemporary 900 had a longitudinally mounted engine, not a transversely mounted one as the NG900/9-3 Mk1 did, so if they’d rotated the powertrain 180 degrees and stuck it in the middle, behind the passenger compartment, they would’ve had a new Sonnett… Alas, it was not to be, but some styling influences from the SAAB EV1 made their way onto the NG900.

That wouldn’t work with the 900’s 4 stroke… perhaps if you kept it facing backwards with the weird Saab transaxle this hypothetical mid engine Sonett could make sense.

Alright, here goes:

Thanks for the correction. Had such a car gone into production, it would’ve been a great halo for the brand - and who knows if it would’ve led to the company’s survival to this day, instead of GM buying it only to let it wither on the vine to the point where it had to be put out of its misery?

As much as I like Saab and “what if” alt-history… no. Saab lacked the image to be viable as a niche manufacturer (a sports one, most likely), and lacked the scale to be viable as a mass manufacturer on its own.

Dang, this reminds me that I really should start writing my article(s) about Saab’s downfall this summer, and then maybe post their English translations somewhere here

Hint: This futuristic car was to come with a 2L 16V engine, with power being sent through all four wheels, and an automatic transmission.

Here’s a larger picture.

I think I got it.

Mitsubishi Gaus

That is indeed it. Down to the exact photo I used.

The Gaus was first unveiled at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show. It then made an appearance at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 1996. This car featured crazy bits like gullwing doors and swivelling seats.

What a quirky looking car. Oddly futuristic for its time.

Good game?
