Speaking from experience, I… don’t think it matters that much what countries you allow in or out. You’re probably not likely to model the ins and outs of tariffs and global trade, right? What’s the difference between a car from America, a car from an America-like country I made, one from a country you made and one from a country the devs made, to the challenge?
A lot of entrants to ALC aren’t really tied to a specific country in any meaningful ways, to the point that the couple of entries that are end up being memorable for it. Of those entries, it’s a pretty fair mix between Automationverse, original and IRL.
Part of that’s due to the harsher turn into alt-hist, but part of it’s also that a lot of folks just make their own stuff. One consequence of saying “no, these countries aren’t allowed” or “no, you have to expllicitly commit to one country” is that folks who have existing lore based in one of those countries will have to hastily retool.
The way I’ve handled it is to say “you can have your car be from those countries, but don’t expect a perfect 1:1 correspondence”.
An important rules question though: What sort of speeds are we expected to hit here? Do the people of Velkarja expect to travel at 100km/h on highways, or are they happy with something quite a bit slower?
Well, as the infrastructure is pretty bad in 1946, few roads are good for handling any sort of speed. It can of course matter for prestige if you make something like a full fledged sports car for the wealthy few, even if it is not useful in very many places at the time. I would probably not sweat it too much if I went into the lower ends of the market though.
One thing to consider - regulations (TBA) will be pretty lax for the first round. If you make lots of affordable death traps with performance way over what the roads can handle…it might have consequences later on.
Well. Worldbuilding will go on for as long as this challenge is running probably. But since I don’t see anything lacking that’s needed to tell us what kind of society to build cars for, and since I haven’t gotten any questions in a couple of days now, Is it OK if I start planning the round 1 ruleset now and then put up the first round as soon as I have time, or do you feel that we need to sort out anything first?
I would say, get even just a rough draft of the rules up in case there are any glaring omissions or things that don’t match with the world building.

It is also to keep track of the techpool used between rounds, since you’re not supposed to lower the TP on any point compared to the round before.
This feels a little bit odd given what TP is supposed to represent. Techpool is how far ahead you are, relative to the typical company. That’s a constantly moving target, requiring continual investment. If a company shifts funding from the engine department to the chassis department, then you should expect to see a drop in engine TP.
True. I might reconsider it, considering that there will be a fair amount of years between rounds after all. Maybe just having some restrictions so it won’t be 15 tp on let’s say turbos in one round and then 0 in a round five years later just because the cars in that round will be N/A. But at least I will have until next round to think that over. I also will add a negative TP ban when there is time for a rule update, I forgot that.
As for TP locked to corporation or brand, interesting question, both could have their points, what is the opinion of you others?
I’d lean towards per corporation, personally. Sure, some companies have had duplication across divisions but we’re allowed 3 subs and 3 brands. If TP is per-brand, I could easily send in a sporty Plymouth, premium Buick and an economical Chevrolet each with techpool tailored specifically for the specific market.
Yes. I was leaning towards that option myself and decided on it. I also changed my mind a little bit on the techpool restrictions, and I clarified a little bit about ATS too which I also forgot.
Also, on the license plate front. It is not mandatory to make the license plates exactly like this (but an US sized plate will be what we are going for), but the exact mods used up here are those:
I’d rather call them “RoW” (rest-of-world) plates considering that their plate sizes are identical (or at least similar) to those of plates used in such countries as Japan and Australia - taller and narrower than Euro-sized ones.
