While the Mod.22 served as a way to get at least the people of the major cities used to modern public rail transport and away from the era of the steam train, it had many flaws. First, it was severely underpowered. Constructed from a combination of wood and quite crude steel, it weighed almost 26 tons whilst having an engine only capable of producing 180HP, putting excess stress on the powertrain and reducing reliability on routes with steeper grades. Second, it lacked any form of air conditioning, leading to the trains being called ‘緑の冷蔵庫’, or the ‘Green Refrigerator’ while they were in service in the colder areas of Kawakami, and being even worse in the frigid land of Velkarja. Further, only consists of two cars were possible, massively hampering the ability to expand capacity on networks. As such, Uji Kogyo decided in 1954 that a replacement was needed.
INTRODUCING THE MOD.33 TETSUHADA - 540 SERIES
Sharing similar fundamental parts with the Mod.22, the Mod.33 is equipped with the upgraded version of the Mod.22’s powerplant, but now with more horsepower, torque, and doubled! This means that for each 21 tonne carriage, 408HP is available for drivers to use. Additionally, the carriages now each have their own air conditioning systems using roof mounted fans and a hot air circulation system fed by air heated using the engines. Further, cars can now be coupled at both ends, allowing the Velkarjan National Rail to make trains longer than two cars now! They can be two, four, six or even eight cars long, and thanks to Uji Kogyo’s innovative new electronic ‘FukusuuCarriageSeigyoSystem’, or ‘FCSS’, every single train in a consist can be controlled by a single driver. Further improvements have also been made. Seats are now slightly larger and use a slightly harder foam to prevent sagging and deformation over time, and the passenger windows have been increased in size for better views. Additionally, upgraded brakes have been added.
But for the future… diesel will not suffice. Electricity is the future, and by 1965, Kawakami hopes to have succesfully electrified most of its urban lines and eliminated DMU services. Whether Kawakami is satisfied with simply moving at around 100KPH is the question, or will they hope to move faster? Signficantly faster?
Their brothers off in mainland Japan have decided to move faster after all, so why not Kawakami? Why not Velkarja?
