TMCC40 - Celebrity In A Cheaply-Priced Automobile

Somewhere in England, 2006

For the new series of the world’s top motoring television programme – Overdrive – the producers are looking for a new car to fulfill the role of the Celebrity In A Cheaply-Priced Automobile segment, where celebrities of all kinds from all over the world take a regular, affordable car around the programme’s own test track and set a lap time to be compared with other celebrities’. Thus, this car must be cheap to purchase and run, reliable, and easy to drive, even if it’s not fun, sporty or beautiful.

Priorities

:star: :star: :star: :star:

  • Quality of design execution and realism. Beautiful, svelte or muscular lines aren’t expected, but the design should look well put together and appropriate for the segment.
  • Purchase cost. As the name says, this car must be affordable for the average viewer, and it also shouldn’t strain the production’s budget for initial purchase or potential replacements.

:star: :star: :star:

  • Drivability. Any celebrity or potential buyer, regardless of background or skill level, should be able to drive it with no issue.
  • Reliability. The car should hold up to the abuses of regular track driving, as well as long-term daily use.

:star: :star:

  • Service costs. Due to the increased stress on the car, the production company should easily afford to service and repair it. Likewise, since it’s meant to be an everyday, affordable car, prospective owners shouldn’t be expected to pay costly fees for regular servicing.
  • Safety. While the latest, greatest and most expensive safety tech isn’t necessary or expected at this price point, drivers on the programme should be well-protected from any accidents that could happen on the track.
  • Comfort. While cars aren’t expected to be luxurious cruisers in this segment, it shouldn’t be a crashy, dreadful experience for normal drivers.

:star:

  • Practicality. As it’s meant to be a reasonable and affordable everyday car, outside of the programme’s requirements, it should offer practicality to potential buyers.
  • Environmental resistance. While for the production’s purposes the car will be stored indoors, buyers should expect something that won’t turn into a rust bucket.
  • Sportiness. Although regular buyers won’t expect a car in this segment to be a fun experience, this stat helps quantify the car’s suitability for track driving and cornering.

No Suzuki Liana, Chevrolet Lacetti, or Kia Cee’d in the inspirations?

$45m techpool is A LOT with the Al-Rilma calcs - you’d basically have 2011-2014 tech in 2006!

I’d put at least Comfort somewhere reasonably high in the mix - at the moment your ruleset is one for a basic ‘race to the bottom’. Not that I mind, but I don’t want to send in my bottom of the barrel Mara Zora 1.1 3-cylinder city car…

Maybe also

  • minimum wheelbase?
  • minimum 0-100 time / topspeed etc.?
  • min sportiness (if staying 1-star)?
  • ban negative quality (esp. with such a high techpool)?
  • mandate a manual (since watching celebs drive stick is fun)?
  • mandate 2000s safety?
  • WES10 emissions minimum? (should not be particularly difficult) Or WES11 for a bit of a challenge?
  • mandate a minimum Gasmea Family/Commuter/City car market score? (that will take care of a fair amount of cheese and is thematic to boot)

Quick question how do i check the techpool costings?

I don’t think sportiness should be a priority. The point of these cars are mostly to be unsporty.

I have that at 5 and then the slider at five …but i busted the techpool cap in family values ..so where do i find the costing ..ie 45mil im this challenge

Click on that “+5” and it will open the menu seen in the challange post

If a $45m combined techpool cap is indeed being imposed, you could get there by applying a +7 setting to every engine and trim area.

Could get away with 25/30m tech pool and still make quite a fancy car for the budget.

What about a tire compound restriction? I’m sure someone may try to justify semi slicks.

Good shout, my mind is still in stable era calculations, will reduce to 30 million

Will implement

Makes sense, it is Europe after all

Completely forgot, will add

I’ll consider it

I’ll add wheelbase limits

ABS has been mandatory in Europe since 2004 so I’d probably add that to the rules.

Would make sense to judge them since they’re appreciated.

Good shout on ABS, as far as interiors go, as we all know it’s pretty rare for a challenge to judge them :man_shrugging:t2:

Doesn’t hurt to give them a little bonus for the extra effort.

is a rear engined car allowed? im considering a boxer 4 entry

Bet!

If you can make the case for it being a mid 2000s economy car then sure… Remember though, realism is a priority

swapped it to a na i3, 50hp go brrr

Should there be a manual only rule? The legally distinct motoring show only used an auto on very rare occasions.
