WOSSOM: Join Anytime! (Gravel Rally Competition Submissions CLOSED)

Hey, send it up now. I am still starting to work on inspections

At least, I should, as I am actually still focused on the backend stuff. :grimacing:

Suddenly, I feel like a programmer

This AI thing is serious, people. I would need a considerably sized team to do what I am doing if this was a few years ago.

The internet is down here since yesterday, so I will have to leave you with a cellphone picture for now. I did a small test down the hill and all cars worked. Finishing the inspections now.

The internet just started working again while I texted you through my cellphone. Getting back to work now. Since I am pretty much rebuilding everything from scratch, I am not sure if I will be able to release the blog post in time. I will leave you with some pictures, at least for now.

A few cars didn’t make it in time for the official pictures but are also being inspected. I’ll give you the results soon.

Are the gravel rally cars still 1946?

Yep

All cars but one have passed the inspection! Please note that some stats are being randomly checked, as it would be too much to review everything manually. The new version of WOSSOM that I am working on should automate this process and check everything automatically.

  • The A.G. 14CV engine is not starting.

  • The Preto Velho has some fixtures that are slightly ahead of their time, but I believe they are plausible.

This one is going to be fun. See you in the dunes!

I really am not sure what is happening with these cars, I definitely think I have to start from scratch next factory round, as this bug is really annoying :S

I’ll try re-exporting it when I get home today.

Live competition starting soon, at 13:00 GMT. This time, I will try to check the chat in case someone shows up. I will give each car two chances and will try to show the replay for the best run of each car and the crashes. At the end, I will talk about what is being developed and why the blog posts have been temporarily put on hold. See you soon!

Nearly a 4 hours event :grimacing:
It was a lot of fun! I will try to add time markers so each one can skip to their own cars.

second place? woah, didn’t expect it since i was having a struggle driving it myself

Just watched it and damn if it wasn’t a handful, throwing itself left and right… but that rear engine helped it hit those jumps and not go face first in the sand! all in all, amazing driving.

My reaction to the Victor’s result:

I’m impressed you managed to wrangle the Victor well enough to cross the line, let alone to blow everything else out of the water. Most of my testing had very disastrous results (like the below).

The humble little delivery van seems to have clenched a victory, and by a large margin too. I’m very proud of it.

As for the Stout, its performance was a longshot here. It was designed for the streets, and it did very well in the Baja. Had the suspension not been busted on its sole run, it may have placed on the podium alongside its little brother. But, that’s racing.

ggs to all.

This time, the AI is basically just correcting my grammar, as I have a couple of elephants in the room to address. Important, lengthy text ahead.

WOSSOM is Free and Openly Shared

I have no intention of ever charging for WOSSOM. Not only that, but I’ve always made the spreadsheet public so that anyone can use it for other challenges. That said, it would probably be easier to reinvent the wheel than to make sense of my mess—which brings us to the next elephant in the room:

WOSSOM Has Lots of Errors

That’s why I always emphasize that this is a personal, amateur, beta project. Most of the mistakes I make stem from manually entering data into the databases, creating formulas, and handling imports and exports. The deeper I got into improving WOSSOM, the more complex the technical requirements became.

On top of that, Wix has severely limited the functionalities I want to implement. I’ve now reached a point where I need to learn coding—including some really tedious but necessary aspects like continuous integration, deployment, automated testing, online databases, and more.

Which brings us to the next rather large elephant:

WOSSOM Is Evolving Into a Game Within Two Games

The WOSSOM website will feature a custom member area where players can take on different roles, such as car company manager, car designer, or driver—or even a combination of these. Essentially, WOSSOM is turning into a full-fledged experience between Automation and BeamNG.

Again, I’m not a programmer, but I’m doing my best to make it work.

And next up, you guessed it—the elephant himself:

Me, Since I Can’t Seem to Stop Gaining Weight

My name is Rafael (aka Rafles or Mr. Franco). I’m 44 years old and live in a tiny town called Monte Alto, part of the paradisiacal Arraial do Cabo, near Rio de Janeiro.

For 10 years, I owned and ran a restaurant, employing over 300 people during that time. I was fortunate to be born into a family that gave me the financial opportunity to earn a degree, travel a good portion of the world, and participate in all kinds of extreme sports—especially car racing. I gradually took on my own expenses, especially after opening the restaurant.

Unfortunately, I was also born with several health conditions that have led me to undergo nine major surgeries—four of them aimed at relieving the chronic pain that has followed me since childhood. Sadly, none none of those four worked, including the last two, which some of you witnessed. My condition continues to worsen over time. My days usually start fine, but as the hours pass, the pain becomes unbearable—to the point where I can’t even read a book. The only thing I can do is lie down and wait.

Hoping that work-related stress might be a factor, I decided to sell my restaurant a few years ago. I bought a VW Virtus (I used to drive an old Beetle) to work as an Uber driver as a backup plan for when I ran out of money. I did a few trips—it was manageable, as far as jobs go.

After spending most of my savings searching for a cure for my pain (I’ll admit, a good chunk also went into my sim rig and the racing Beetle), the day finally arrived. I ran out of money.

Support

Even with all of WOSSOM’s limitations, the fact that I’ve built it—even partially—means that I have a lot of emotional support from you all, even if you don’t realize it.

Since I now have to balance my time between driving for Uber and managing my pain, I will only be able to work on WOSSOM when I have time left—which brings us to our final elephant.

Donations

At some point, I will add a donation option for those who would rather see me spending more time developing WOSSOM than driving my Virtus or for anyone who simply wishes to support me.

And as the first elephant circles back:

WOSSOM Will Remain Free and Continue Moving Forward

Once I have gained enough knowledge, I will share the GitHub repository along with instructions for anyone who wants to help develop WOSSOM or use it for other challenges.

Blog Posts Are on Hold

We all love them, but since each post was taking up too much time, they’re on pause for now. As soon as we have our next beta release, Tati, Benny, and Rusty will be back!

Thank you all for your support.

You won’t want to miss the video. Hope you enjoy it! The link is in the blog post. Most of the content was taken from my last forum post, but with the WOSSOM touch. I’ll get to the inspections as soon as my brain cools down.
