1991 Great Archanean Trek [FINAL RESULTS]

Seems like the one car I put actual effort into might do well…

loving it so far!

This is really cool so far! I must have missed the regulation on seats because both of my cars were out of regulation lol. Weird that the suspension is so low on the Valence. Did it load like that? I had it up as high as the suspension setup would let me go

Yes, I didn’t touch anything on the cars in terms of tuning, only fixing violations and the number fixtures.

Yeah sometimes I found that with some suspension types (solid axles) the save game would misread which suspension was on the chassis and give it something else but if you clicked through it’d reset, which would often cause the suspension height to reset. For me normally this would mean far too high a ride height but it might work the other way.

Buggy Class 121-135

121 DukeOFhazards Buggy Yotata F-class Micro Tourer '91 JPN Jari-Matti Harvetoula FIN Marsa Tarjous FIN

Loud-engined and impressive looking, but actually not that fast. On top of that the Yotata seems to be oddly powered only through the front wheels.
Even during the Prologue Harvetoula and Tarjous have issues. There are some instances where the dampers look hard, and the wheels don’t always grip well, especially due to the differential it appears.
The start of the main stage is somewhat promising, but once the going gets somewhat more rough the Yotata starts to suffer again. Between Sali and Point Nowhere, despite not being the toughest part of the route, the Yoyota Micro Tourer gets stuck in a gully. There’s nothing Harvetoula and Tarjous can do.

122 DukeOFhazards Buggy Yotata F-class Megumi '91 JPN Matt Prill GBR Robert Cleaver GBR

Not the best prologue run, with Prill missing one of the turn-ins at the steepest section, leading to some precarious three-point turning.
Quite a lot of issues getting over Agorgot. The 2.2 litre Turbo-charged four cylinder seems to not make sufficient power low down to really allow the Megumi to tackle the steepest slopes comfortably, leading to a few engine stalls. Added to that, the front suspension proves to be extremely fragile, and collapses entirely after encountering a few rocks. There is no way the Yotata can continue.

123 Alib Buggy Bramble Bolero Baja '91 GBR Oliver Townsend GBR Gustav Kristofferson SWE

The Bramble Bolero seems to have a largely useless gearbox due to those short ratios. It’s basically a two-speed: you start in 3rd and drive in 5th. Lots of wheelspin and torque understeer from the front-wheel drive system.
As a result, the buggy is very awkward to drive with that gearbox, and it is a struggle to get the car through the prologues.
The buggy is also quite top heavy it seems, as Townsend and Kristoffersson roll the car, luckily without much damage, on more than one occasion after the start in Archania.
At least wihtout much damage until Agorgot. The front-wheels without any kind of manual diff lock just don’t find the grip up the steep slopes. The buggy slides down awkwardly, tips over and Townsend and Kristoffersson have to give up the fight.

124 Alib Buggy Bramble Jerboa '91 GBR Nigel Hughes GBR Sean Fallon IRL

An absolutely beautiful buggy this. The short gearing, just as with the other Bramble buggy, is not the best, but it certainly suits this rear-engined rear-wheel drive car better; even if it makes the rear a bit loose in the corners of the gravel at times.
Lots of time lost interstage though, with Hughes and Fallon procrastinating way too much to get the buggy ready for the real work, and in getting all equipment set up on location in a timely fashion.
Slight detour near Al Mina Oasis. Hughes and Fallon notice the slopes there are not that suited for rear-wheel drive cars. The path is a difficult one, but the Jerboa is a lively and spirited thing and crawls through.
The big challenge is Agorgot, and the buggy does have it difficult, but with the manual diff lock engaged, the 124 car makes it up in the end.

125 Bf94387 Buggy Aura AR4 GAT E '91 ISL Olaf Norðmannsson ISL Handel Manderholf DEU

Incredibly smooth prologue run from the obscure Aura team, an Icelandic car builder. Remarkable for the 125 car driven by Norðmannsson and the German Manderholf is also the very low fuel consumption of the
four cylidner engine.
The story continues in the main stage, the Aura is extremely fast, smooth over the bumps, capable on rough terrain, and economical… The only downside is long maintenance times on that engine in the middle of the car.

126 Bf94387 Buggy Aura BB4T GAT Spec '91 ISL Tjaldur Jórmunrekursson ISL Ingrid Olsen GRL

Another Icelandic Aura entry, this time with a Danish co-driver from Greenland. Jórmunrekursson
and Ingrid Olsen will be driving the Aura BB4T. The buggy looks quite mundane compared to the other Aura entry in this class.
Again though, the Aura proves to be exceptional when it comes to fuel economy in the Prologue.
Without any differential locks, the car struggles over slippery rocks and on loose sand on the main stage. However, while taking longer and burning more fuel than otherwise would be necessary, it makes the finish relatively comfortably.

127 machalel Buggy Bechov A-Buggy '91 RUS Egor Andryukhin RUS Kostas Yartsev RUS

The Russians Andryukhin and Yartsev in the Bechov A class inspired buggy; its characteristic small 800 litre three cylinder engine screaming its high pichted song. Despite relative lacking in power, the teams sets good pace in the prologue, but they are plagued by technical issues and long repair times.
Despite not having any specific off-road modifications but a raised suspension and off-road tires, that does not seem to be the biggest issue. We are only at Fazo when Andryukhin has already rolled the car twice. And it is not because of driver error; the little Bechov buggy is just lacking stability. Still, despite this all, and evading any technical issues this time around, a pretty decent time for the Russians upon arrival in Archania.

128 machalel Buggy Boccaccino – HYPR '91 ITA Antonio Ricci ITA Pierre Thomas FRA

Claiming to be hyper-economical, the very aerodynamic Boccaccino, is a daring design from Italy. It could surprise us with the small and intricate V8 turbo, placed in the middle of the buggy.
Not sure after the prologue though. Ricci, the Italian driver, had issues dealing with the extremely long gear ratios and the understeer. Thomas, the French engineer and navigator, struggled to service the HYPR within the allocated time before shipment to Archania.
Tragically, while the Boccaccino does not perfrom horribly, despite a lack of manual differential, it simply bottoms out over all but the smallest elevations on the main stage route. There’s only so much Thomas can take in terms of pushing and digging the car free. It only takes the loose sand and occasional rock at the Al Mina Oasis to strand the car for good.

129 yangx2 Buggy Huangdou CC-110RTB '91 CHN Lie Jie Chen CHN Bogdan Popov RUS

We’ve got this apprentice in the office continually saying “China” in a funny way. He’s on point now, for the Huangdou team competing for the glory of the People’s Republic.
The car looks modern yet distinctly bland, and quite reminiscent of something we’ve seen before, yet surprisingly well-designed. That said, the prologue is sadly filled with some reliability troubles and repairs.
That team driving is an interesting communist combo by the way, with a Chinese driver and a Soviet co-pilot. And it’s a pity of those communication issues, because the Huangdou climbs over any rock and obstacle like a veritable mountain goat.

130 Turbofreak88884444 Buggy Solvent Manta '91 USA Joshua Ratiken USA Andrew Kelly USA

[no picture]

The Solvent Manta runs into serious issues during homologation. There are no lights, no blinkers, no breaklights, no licence plates. It is simply not road legal, and not able to be adapted as such fast enough to get to the prologue location on its own power.

131 Turbofreak88884444 Buggy Solvent Mule '91 USA James Ratiken USA Joe Habenero USA

[no picture]

The Solvent Mule runs into serious issues during homologation. There are no lights, no blinkers, no breaklights, no licence plates. There’s a interior seat violation. It is simply not road legal, and not able to be adapted as such fast enough to get to the prologue location on its own power.

In addition, James Ratiken, the driver, is highly controversial in rudely pronouncing his co-driver as “Hispanic”, denouncing him the US nationality and latching out to the organisation when they pressed on.

132 Jaimz Buggy FM Scorpion '91 GBR Lt. George Harcourt-Entwhistle GBR Autumn Marshall GBR

Another car with issues, the FM Scorpion. But new bodypanels and frame were acquired surprisingly fast. Even so, a significant penalty for that mishap and for steering and traction aid issues will have to be taken into account.
Lots of noise, lots of smoke from the flat six sports car, but Lt. - exactly how British can you go? - George Harcourt-Entwhistle and Autumn Marshall are not noting down world-shockingly great times. The fuel consumption, however, is something to be noted.
When faced with tougher terrain, the FM Scorpion proves to be unreliable, difficult to control, and simply inadequate. The car has torn itself apart by the time the Brits reach Zimbukto, and while repairs are attempted, it is clear that the Lieutenant’s battle has come to a close.

133 Mikonp7 Buggy Haapala Buggy '91 FIN Aabo Kujala FIN Märten Maki FIN

Homolagtion review on the Finnish Haapala Buggy found an illegal ABS system on the brakes. That focus on safety is quite uncharacteristic for Finnish teams.
You don’t immediately see that in Kujala’s driving though. Or perhaps that is the sound of that racing V10 engine that makes it sound that way. With more than 500 horsepower this should be a force to reckon with.
But in reality Kujala and Maki suffer from the long gearing and very odd suspension setup. The wheels appear to be too big, the suspension too stiff and too high.
In Archania proper there must be concerns for the finish team. The fuel consumption during the prologue was through the roof, and no extra fuel was taken on board. Despite earlier concerns, the suspension and the wheels do their job on the differentiated low speed surfaces and obstacles that Archania throws at the team, although the extreme width of the vehicle made manoeuvring more difficult that it could have been in some places.
Relief is still visible on the drivers’ faces upon arrival. The tanks are almost fully empty.

134 electroGG Buggy SW Vega '91 USA Alexander Krebs DEU Yoshigahara Totoya JPN

The SW Vega is a sedan based buggy that has more power than you would expect. With specific offroad and rally set up and modifications it looks the part on paper.
Krebs and Totoya drive well, but slight damage leads to huge and lengthy repairs, costing additional time.
Somewhat unexpected, the Vega is also struggling between Fazo and Sali, where the surface becomes rocky. While the suspension can handle this, the body bangs on the rocks nearly every time the team encounters a rock. By the time Krebs and Totoya reach Zimbukto, the car needs significant repairs to the front bodywork to prevent it from blocking or shredding the wheels.

135 electroGG Buggy SW Virgo '91 USA Darko Mitrović YUG Vitomir Urošević YUG

The other SW buggy, named Virgo, and driven by the Yugoslavians Mitrović and Urošević.
A good car in terms of drivability, the prologue is ruined due to intricate engine issues. The fuel pump might have something to do with it, because this car was by far the thirstiest over the prologue stage.
Archania – Zimbukto – Archania loop though, the Virgo is breaking all records at every checkpoint. It is amazing what Mitro and Uro are doing here. But alas, just before Maré, the the engine sputters, and the fuel has been spent. They were miles ahead of any other time at this point. This is a sour exit, solely based on a decision to save weight over being sure in terms of fuel.

Prologue times:

A very convincing win from the Armor Valence (#114) here. Only the CMT Kyalami (#116) and the Aura AR4 (#125) can somewhat keep up.

Wow 5th and 28th… Both results far better than expected!

Can’t wait to see how the other classes go.

I achieved my goal, proof that power isn’t everything (at least with the Gemtrek)

The Gemtrek is one of my favorite vehicles to drive. It is fun, and by far the best at rock climbing of all non-specialised offroad vehicles (those without 4x4, low range gearbox and manual diff locks). And it is rear-wheel drive… I love it.

The tension is palpable for my first entry… I hope that the Rally-truck does me well.

somthing tells me that a few of the updates that automation threw out broke a few mods that i used for headlights  and a few other things

The entires were made after that update that broke the mods. Plus the pictures you posted of your cars yourself before sending them in do not contain any of the necessary fixtures either.

At least your offroad and truck entries do.

Well, that was a nice surprise! I will happily take a 2nd and 4th.
Hopefully team Aura can hold this up!

The CMT management is very proud of their engineers, mechanicans and of course drivers. The results show clearly the quality of our road cars, as everyone in this company works with skill and passion.

We look forward to our other cars and wish both our participants and our rivals all the best.

For crashing into the ONLY tree, 11th is prety good. im proud of my baby

Offroad Class

501 @Linkluke LLA Nequay Rally Spec '91 GBR Luke Prior GBR Fanz Benstein GER

A very clean run for a very capable off-roader, the LLA Nequay Rally Spec sets down a decent time in the prologue. Fuel economy seems very decent as well for this one. We’ll be looking forward to see if Anglo-German duo Prior and Benstein can repeat that over the whole Trek.
The LLA does seem to be a little more bouncy than expected over the rough terrain, but it’s a capable off-roader. The brakes oddly enough don’t always seem to be at their best, but that might be an ABS issue. That in combination with suspension repairs do cost the team some time.

502 @DoctorNarfy MEN Polski 1260X Urbvan '72 POL Enrica Oskara POL Kacper Wiśniewski POL

Quite some repair work already for Oskara and Wiśniewski in this prologue, the 70s MEN offroader overheating and breaking down. There might be some fine-tuning needed with their new engine tune. The run itself is good, with a highlight the breaks on the descent: at the part where the gradient is the highest, it briefly even wheelies.
There might have been some reliability issues with that retuned 2.2 litre four-banger, but those seem to have been solved, and the light-weight communist truck has got some go to it.
An engine stall and trouble to get going again on Agorgot is costing the team some time. Despite not having a manual differential locker or second short range gearbox, the MEN does not get into any other trouble, and finishes comfortably, and, worth noting, with only very little fuel used.

503 @F12OM Nakamura Archos 2300 CrossX '91 JPN Taisho Tanaraka JPN Thomas M. Ranch AUS

Homologation specialists first and foremost establish the engine and chassis are making use of disproportionately difficult to manufacture materials and components, and decided to lay down a penalty. The engine tune by itself is… odd. Apart from that, the Nakamura Archos 2300 CrossX does what is advertised with its 2300cc engine and 4x4 drive.
Tanaraka and Ranch make a decent start in the prologue event, and the off-roader appears to be quite nippy. The newfangled traction control system does seem to create some odd driving behaviour at times, occasionally shutting off the power transfer to the wheels.
We see Tanaraka struggling with the throttle response over loose sand and gravel. Sometimes there’s all the power to the wheels and then suddenly it seems to go completely. It causes frustration in the cabin which leads to some bad decisions and a roll-over that causes quite some damage. After repairs the team can continue. One thing remarkable about the Nakamura is its ability to climb over rocks and wade through deep water, we do have to underline that.

504 @Mad_Cat Petrov Metrocart '82 RUS Pertti Haapalainen FIN Jaana Korhonen FIN

Another off-roader from behind the recently dropped iron curtain, the Petrov Metrocart. Driven here by two Finnish enthusiasts. The light Petrov offroad utility truck might do well this Trek, although we from our side have concerns regarding the drive-train. It is advertised as an all-wheel drive, but it does not look like the front wheels are driven much.
The prologue does not cause any concerns when it comes to driving, but the engine is having some technical issues that need to be addressed, low range power output seems limited, and the fuel economy is through the roof.
The rear-wheel driven bias causes issues near Al Mina. The Petrov makes it through the steep loose sand sections, but there’s a lot of getting out of the car and digging the wheels out involved for Haapalainen and Korhonen.
Even getting to Fazo does not solve the issues of the two Fins, the Petrov really misses traction whenever the surface gets too loose. The differential doesn’t seem to be helping matters either, with one wheel often spinning helplessly, while the other does not budge. And the massive Agorgot mountain is the hurdle too far. The Petrov digs itself it too deep, on an incline too steep, and the crew needs to throw the towel.

505 @TheAlmightyTwingo Meijer Type 1 '46 NLD Ferdinand van Oosten NLD Willem de Jong NLD

Well, here’s an interesting one: A Type I Meijer, restored to its original state, driven by the Dutch duo van Oosten and de Jong. The restoration includes the original one litre engine. It will be interesting to see how the underpowered but capable vehicle performs here.
Three cylinders, and less than 40 horsepower, but the Type I still sets down a passable prologue time. It is quite responsive at low speeds.
The low power does cause some issues during the Al Mina passage, but after multiple attempts, the Dutch Type I scales the most difficult part. Van Oosten and de Jong still seem pleased: this old Meier completed one of the most harsh routes on the offroad racing circuit. Apart from a small transmission issue – related possibly to a wrong downshift on the low range box – the Type I held up mechanically remarkably well also.

506 @CMT LTO 30 V6 AWD Trek '87 DEU Walter Groehl DEU Fred Burnside USA

A cheap and simple looking design from CMT, but the engine looks more than capable.
The prologue saw the occasional moment where the power dropped, presumably down to the traction control system integrated into the car.
The traction control system really becomes an issue in the Archanean dunes, where it seriously handicaps Groehl and Burnside, only barely dragging the car through the Al Mina Oasis.
There are often parts where the throttle appears to be completely unresponsive. Adding to the problems of Groehl and Burnside, the all-wheel-drive system appears to be quite basic and not off-road oriented. But the worst concern is the fuel consumption, which is abhorrently bad; and without taking any additional supplies, the CMT is stranded just past the halfway point, at Point Nowhere.

507 @Rudzis Schwarzburg Felix '88 DEU Florian Eichel DEU Alessa Cardozo PRY

The German 5-cylinder turbo offroader Schwarzburg is a nippy thing.
Eichel and the Paraguayan Cardozo set down a good time with the Schwarzburg Felix in the Prologue. The only issues that arise are some suspension damage that takes repair time.
In Archana, the Felix proves to be very capable as an offroader. The nippy engine does lead to Eichel pushig down the throttle a bit too much, spinning the car out near Zimbukto, and damaging one of the tyres. Despite this, the time Eichel and Cardozo register when re-entering Archania is very competitive.

508 @SuperLemonade Alkaev Trotter '91 USA Louis Lecuyer FRA Braden Burns IRL

It was a decision balancing on the edge of disqualification for the Alkaev Trotter team during homologation. A number of fixture violations and seemingly unfinished rear of the American vehicle almost resulted in the car not being accepted. But after heated discussions, and some hastily attached lighting, it was accepted.
Technically the Alkaev looks sounds, although maybe a bit heavy, being close to the 1500 kg maximum weight. Main issue for the French-Irish duo during the prologue appears to be rather chronic understeer from the Trotter. The fuel consumption might also give rise to concern for Lecuyer and Burns, as it is quite high from the large 4-cylinder engine, and no extra provisions have been requested for the Archana trip.
The start out of Archania is not without issues, as the Alkaev immediately bursts a front tyre. The large turning circle is not making it any easier for Lecuyer and Burns to manoeuvre around the rocks and obstacles around Black Sands Lake and Sali in particular.

509 @gridghost Scarab Flare H24RX '90 SWE Tom Andersson SWE Anna Fredricks SWE

Understeery under acceleration and the front seems to bounce quite a lot at speed. Those are the first impression for the Scarab Flare. While the base time as such appears to be a very good one, Andersson and Fredericks do run into significant technical issues, leading to penalties times for repairs outside of the scheduled times.
The repairs in the margin of the prologue have helped the turboed inline-6 powered Scarab offroader. There are some concerns regarding limited ground clearance, but the Scarab is light and nimble, and Andersson easily evades the worst obstacles on route, even if that means a slightly longer route. There are some concerns from Anna Fredericks due to that longer route, as the engine is running quite rich, but even though a massive spike in fuel use at the Agorgot climb makes the team nervous, Archania is reached easily with the avaiable fuel load.

510 @DukeOFhazards Yotata Culero Baja S '91 JPN Keiichi Katsuomoto JPN Ayako Ayane JPN

An all Japanese team with the Yotata Culero and drivers Katsuomoto and Ayane, this entry is a strange one from a mechanical view point, with a very powerful V6 small displacement engine, and an automatic gearbox.
In terms of driving characteristics, the combination seems to work, but technically, the car and the engine might be missing a bit in terms of reliability for heavy offroad courses.
Despite the automatic gearbox, the Yotata proves to be capable of offroading, and difficult sections such as the Al Mina Oasis and Agorgot are taken without much issue. There are some difficulties in keeping the vehicle uprights over the higher speed sand dune sections, and there is at least one occasion where Katsuomoto and Ayane go for a roll, but luckily without significant damage or time loss.

511 @GassTiresandOil Armor Valence PanelWagon '68 USA Matt Madison USA Not communicated -

A bit of consternation when Matt Madison turns up sans co-pilot in an old Armor Valance Panel Wagon. The adventurer insists on being allowed to go to Archana. The organisation eventually complies, but only after wavering all responsibility for any incidents.
The prologue is not that hope giving, with a roll incident and minor damage to the car.
Undeterred, Madison gets the Valance ready for the trip to Archana. The initial performance appears good, with solid progress from Archania to Al Mina Oasis and Fazo. It is around Sali and Point Nowhere that we lose touch with the American as he fails to show up at any checkpoint. It is to be presumed that the car broke down or got stuck, and that he managed to get lost, because searches along the direct routes bring no result.

512 @Bf94387 AURA BoBBy GAT Spec '91 ISL Tia “Krestnaya Matj” Byrchkyov RUS Lianna Varskovich RUS

Tia “Krestnaya Matj” Byrchkyov and Lianna Varskovich are two Russian ladies who will be representing the Icelandic Aura team in this class with the BoBBy. Despite the fluffy dog name, the Aura is aggressive looking, and the Russian girls are fast in the prologue.
Also in Archana, the BoBBy is reliable and quick, and extremely fuel efficient. There are some slight altercations near Anuman, where a navigation error sends the team down a dangerous washed-away track, but even here the Icelandic offroader manages to crawl on.

513 @machalel Bechov YI91 TREK '91 RUS Sasha Popova RUS Yuri Romanov RUS

Even more Russians, this time in a brand new Russian Bechov model. Another female driver with Alexandra “Sasha” Popova behind the wheel, and Yuri Romanov – no claim to any crown – as co-driver.
Not a spectacular performance in the prologue sessions, but no great issues either for the Bechov. The engine in this thing is certainly not standard. It is a high revving V6, but the power output does not seem to be particularly high.
Minor issues for Popova and Romanov quite early on, when the Bechov seems to bottom out near Ziffa. Getting the car free used up more fuel that they have calculated in for.
Another slight mishap at Agorgot, where a steering error positions the Bechov with one wheel over the edge of a cliff. It’s a tense moment, but the Russians keep calm and manage to back out and continue.

514 @STM316 G&W Sherwood - W29 4WD US '80 GBR Glen Campbell USA Reginald Dwight GBR

An older G&W Sherwood turned up at homologation amidst quite some racket. Reason for the noise was a complete lack of exhaust system. After re-installing the exhaust, the Americo-British team of Campbell and Dwight were allowed to enter with a small penalty.
A capable offroader, the G&W does not like the higher speed sections during the prologue. Campbell is pushing the truck to its limits, but it nonetheless bodes well for the slower and tougher tracks in Archana. There is, for some reason, a lot of maintenance time for the team in preparation for the trip there.
As predicted, the G&W is slow and methodical here in Archana. There seems to be no haste for Campbell and Dwight, who take their merry time cleaning and servicing the truck at nearly every checkpoint. It is as if the team is completing the trek out of leisure rather than competition.

515 @Turbofreak88884444 Solvent Greep '91 USA Hal Monroe GBR Matthew Kelly USA

A rather odd contraption this; a small old-fashioned jeep with a relative large 4.3 litre engine with high power figures for a utility car, the Solvent Greep is at least road legal.
Another US-UK team with the British driver Hal Monroeu – of whom it said his last name is invented in a misspelled attempt to appear to have Norman noble ancestors – and the American Matthew Kelly – who insists, to no one who ever asked or commented, that none of his ancestors were Irish.
It does not take long into the Prologue to discover more than a few things utterly wrong with this contraption. The chassis is clearly old and wobbly. The engine is clearly too big and overpowered for the rest of the vehicle. And the gearbox is a low range 3-speed manual that belonged to the original engine. It accelerates fast in its only useful third gear, until about 40 mph. But even that maximum speed is enough to make it keel over dangerously at the merest of suggestions of corner.
As expected, these characteristics cause it issues at the harder sections of Al Mina Oasis and Agorgot. There are some instances where Monroau and Kelly have to get out and right the car from rolling on its side against a ledge or into a ditch, but all-in-all, they manage to get back to Archania unscathed.

516 @Crash77 ORA 420 GAT Spec '91 ROU Anton Muresanu ROU Virgil Dimitru ROU

The Romanian ORA 420 is something to look out for. Powered by a rugged and lazy military spec 4 litre four-cylinder, the Romanian team will try to rely on reliability rather than speed.
Still some issues for Muresanu and Dimitru in the prologue, mainly linked to getting a very languorous automatic gearbox working. It will be interesting how that holds up on the Archanean wilderness.
Some concern in the Romanian ORA paddock in Archnaia. The fuel calculations based on consumption in the prologue look bleak, certainly since the team declined any extra provisions. But in the end, the worry is unnecessary. The slower stages makes that the engine of the ORA is spending much more time in the low rev ranges, burning less fuel, but using the huge torque to pull the vehicle over all obstacles. It looks to be one of the most comfortable rides all entries to be honest. Fuel consumption is not low, but it turns out to be sufficient with just a bit to spare.

517 @Cocojoe Hwarang Yeomso 4x4(Cho Auto Arts) '91 KOR Jeong Song KOR Hwan Cho KOR

[picture not available]

A very odd looking joined Korean entry, which only gets through homologation with a penalty for the materials used on basically everything. The cost of this car is ridiculous.
Song Jeong and Cho Hwan behind the wheel. It is at the time of the prologue not sure what Korea they are from exactly. The oddest thing though is the four litre V12 engine in this… thing.
The combination of all is clearly too much for the car too handle, and the engine simply… gives up after 3 checkpoints in the prologue. It is unclear what the cause is: bad tuning, interference with the traction control system that this offroader inexplicably has? In any case, the Koreans can un-unite and return home.

518 @electroGG SW Urok '91 USA Sebastian Grant GBR Alexa Stevens GBR

SW Urok is standing tall on big, wide wheels, and is powered by a high-strung powerfull inline-5 turbo engine. Grant and Stevens’ biggest hurdle proves to be the newfangled electronic tractions system on the car, which acts up on the loose gravel. This results in a very disappointing time.
The set-up certainly works better on the rough terrain in Archana, although even there the Urok is not spared from problems. The high stance causes a tip-over during a steep and dangerous climb, and it is only with great trouble that Grant and Stevens upright their truck and can continue.

519 @strop Kimura Hana CX7 Dune Buster '91 JPN Suzanne Fox GBR Vincent Fox GBR

With a sensible and modern four cylinder engine the Kimura Hana “Dune Buster” is a not that greatly modified version of a perfectly sensible everyday offroader. With Suzanne and Vincent Fox behind the wheel, initial performance is good. The Kumura is a stable and responsive during the Prologue. However, injection issues do cause some time loss at interstage maintenance.
Performance in Archana is smooth and exemplary. The desert foxes – as the press has begun to refer to them – seem to feel right at home here, and even with some repair stops appear to thoroughly enjoy driving in this competition.

520 @phale Inline Designs YJ-6T '91 USA Adam Scott USA Andrew Spearing USA

A ridiculously light-weight Inline Designs offroader is the last of the offroad entries. Scott and Spearing will guide the light, old-fashioned, army-styled offroader, powered by a modern turbo six cylinder, through this demanding rally.
Prologue impressions are excellent, with good fuel economy, excellent reliability, a ruggedness to equal its military look, and decent speed.
Archana is less kind to Scott and Spearing. The Inline Design struggles at times over the rough terrain, and the team is even close to retiring from the race after an incident during the fording of the Anunman river. Luckily the Inline Designs again shows to be rugged, and can continue after drying out.

Damn. Just read it and should have expected that. Oh well, next time hopefully I can know what I’m doing.
