Round one
The first lot of cars to run up Pikes Peak were the factory 0-2L class cars we had a quick lookover the vehicles before sending them up the hill 3 times, we then averaged these timesto find who was fastest
Maesima Devina ST coupe
Our first car off the mark is the Maesima Devina ST coupe. A gorgeous little commuter and alot of fun for the price ($15840). The car feels and looks like the bastard child of Italian/Korean parents, and this is a good thing. The design of the the car is elegant and sporty while remaining subtle in appearance. Fitted as standard equipment with 16" alloy wheels, a 6sp manual gearbox and 4 seats trimmed with the standard cloth interiors we see from the Korean market. The use of FWD allows ample interior space and luggage room, while the 1.5L DFI engine pumps out a peppy 112hp which it uses all of with its almost flat torque curve. Without using a turbocharger we returned average fuel readings of 4.73L/100km. The little pocket rocket raced up the mountain with an average time of 14.15.98.
Bogliq Neo Sport
Second to be scrutinized was the Bogliq Neo Sport. Sold in the light sport category at $25400 which seems like a fairly good price point until you realize that Bogliq makes 0 profit from the sale of these cars…they make their money back on spare parts. Now we all know Bogliq makes high quality products but $167 for an oil filter is literally bending owners over and giving em one where the sun doesn’t shine! Keep in mind that to keep the warranty on this vehicle it will require servicing every 1750km’s. The Neo sport comes standard with huge Bimbo 6 piston brakes, 17" magnesium wheels, a 6sp manual gearbox and a premium leather interior with WI-fi and premium surround sound stereo with 2 sub-woofers. The looks have been kept sedated but you cannot escape that blue, it seams Bogliq can only paint in blue much like Henry Ford would only do black. The power plant is a 2L VVTL-i turbo 4 cylinder producing 226hp and propelling the car from 0-100km in 6.1 seconds. The little smurf made its way up the mountain with an average time of 11.37.48.
Pikes Viper
There is no mistaking that the Pike Viper means business. With a powerful 2L twin turbo flat 6 producing 255hp with a 8600rpm redline. 0-100 in under 4.4 and a top speed of 261km/h. Wow what a car, a sporty 2 seater with rocarro seats and a factory roll-cage…no stereo though. Sold in the light sport market for $33900 the car uses the same ploy as Bogliq, by selling the car with no mark up but very expensive parts. It’s a clever car this one with active suspension and wings a smart electric differential and all the driver assist you could think off. Be warned though those rear tyres are very wide and very expensive. Finished with a average time of 11.23.27.
Aguila RS20
Absolutely beautiful, amazing attention to detail and a statement wherever she goes. The Aguila RS20 is a track ready car priced at $38300. Standard equipment is very basic on the inside, no stereo, no carpet, but alot a gauges and switches. 18" alloys a fitted with 285 rubber so you will need deep pockets if you thrash her. A really well setup car with just enough computer input while allowing the driver to maintain a connection with the vehicle and the road. The big bore 2L 4 cylinder turbo produces 500hp and sounds like an angry bunch of bee’s being attacked by wasp’s. 0-100 in 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 336km/h she finished up with a time of 10.11.80.
Torpedo
A simple looking car with a complex chassis and engine. This beast produces 500hp and maintains it for 4000rpms. How? With a 2L magnesium DOHC 40 valve twin turbo v8 and 44 psi of boost! Interestingly the car uses a 4 speed manual transmission and does not have power steering. Standard equipment includes behemoth 24" alloy wheels, 2 seats which are not trimmed, no stereo and possibly the smallest set of disc brakes ever used on a car of this magnitude with puny 165mm single piston brakes, the car does utilize active suspension, however at $47500 its an expensive way to get yourself killed. This is one off those car that seems far too under-engineered to be used in anger. Average time was 10.40.99
XS-2
Another serious contender here. Classic looks combined with a modern 2L 5 valve flat 6 that produces 500hp and propels the vehicle down the quarter mile in 10.8 seconds. Priced at $28300 its quite good money for a track vehicle that’s this fast. Standard equipment includes a basic interior that has had a decent cloth trim fitted no stereo but plenty of switches and dials a 7sp manual gearbox and 23" magnesium wheels. A light well tuned car that will not try to kill you in every turn, it does go fast and it does it well. There is no trickery here just good old fashioned time consuming tuning and testing. The final average time was 10.30.44
Maesima Prova Tz
Maesima had all bases covered in the 0-2L class with a total of 3 entrants in this class alone! This is their second offering the Prova Tz. It is very boring to look at, it just has nothing that sticks out from the crowd. That being said the interior is of a higher standard than the other vehicles we have looked at today and it does have a very nice 2L DFI engine that puts out 151hp and is quiet and smooth unlike the turbo entrants we have seen. A 6sp manual gearbox and 16" alloy wheels put the power to the ground and 295mm disc brakes pull her up. A well tuned suspension setup resulted in a final average time of 13.41.28
Maesima MRZ-3 Xz
Maesima’s third entrant. Powered by a long stroke 1.5L 4 cylinder producing 152hp mated to a 6sp manual gearbox. Again not the most interesting car to look at but very well engineered and very reliable. prices start from $18480 and you get a fair bit for the money. Its a 2 seater runabout with a cd player and factory rollcage. She rolls on 16" alloy wheels and has brakes setup for quick time attack laps. Its a very forgiving and fun little car that could be driven everyday. The time was 13.07.21.
Fahzeug M1
The smallest car in class. At $15600 its a cheap runabout car. Standard equipment includes 4 seats, a decent stereo system, 15" alloy wheels and 300mm disc brakes. The rear wheels are powered by a 2L turbo 4 cylinder which produces 163hp. A 6sp manual gearbox and LSD differential transfer the power to the wheels. An intelligent active sporty suspension adjusts on the fly to the road and/or driving conditions. The average time up the hill was 12.39.09
