Bogliq Automotive USA

1979 Model 18 (Squadstar)

Unlike the Cargostar, the Squadstar needed to be updated as Bogliq product planners felt that the safety of the Model 5 Squadstar wasn’t up to scratch, compared with the rest of the Bogliq passenger car range. Therefore the Model 18 Squadstar was born; from a steel box mounted on a modified Model 15 chassis.

The Model 18 was a major departure from the old model, with RWD and a monocoque chassis replacing the L-FWD and ladder configuration on the Model 5. The cab-over-engine design was awkward to drive initially, but once its quirks were learnt then it proved to be a wieldy and capable people mover…

1979 Squadstar

An awkward driving position is its only real flaw

The Model 18 should warm the hearts of all those who need space for seven but are tired of driving a repurposed delivery van!

1979 Model 19 (Overlander)

The Model 6 had served as Bogliqs hardcore offroader for over twenty years, but it was slow, thirsty and unpleasant to be a passenger in for any length of time. The Model 19 was engineered to provide 2/3rds the offroad ability of the Model 6 but provide substantial improvements in on-road driving ability, passenger comfort and attempt to reduce fuel usage…

1979 Model 20 (Nihilist)

The 70’s was witness to the decline in the Model 9’s fortunes in the sports car market. Tight, old fashioned interior and lack of storage and luggage space drove customers away while the strangled powerplant forced even the most determined Nihilist owner to hold onto their pre-smog model. So, the 70’s seeing the launch of an all new Nihilist in the Model 20 was rather fitting.

The new Model 20 had several revolutionary features that the Model 9 didn’t have, such as a fibreglass body and aerodynamic enhancements to the body. The only thing missing was the turbochargers, as the Powertrain division was concerned the fuel economy targets couldn’t be met with current technology.

The Model 20 Nihilist is not as pretty as the Model 9 was. But the Model 20 is very fast, very quick and is very distinctive; all valuable qualities in an apex spec halo car! Love it or loathe it, you cannot ignore the 1979 Model 20 and for this reason the Nihilist nameplate gets to stay at the pointy end of Bogliq USA’s business plans.

1983 Model 14 (Zealot)

The debut and four year run of the Mk 1 Model 14 in 1979 was a mixed bag for Bogliq. On the upside, the Zealot was roomier and higher performing than ever before but, on the downside, the Model 14 was bland to look at and didn’t stand out against the competition. Prices were high and trim levels were unconvincing. All up the Mk 1 Model 14 was barely able to entice loyal Bogliq buyers to upgrade, let alone make conquest sales…

Therefore, it was with these problems in mind that guided the Mk 2 facelift. The front and rear design was refreshed, the suspension and brakes were fettled and the trim levels enhanced. But the big ticket was the introduction of Multi-Bog Fuel Injection to the Delta engine family. Power and efficiency increased and fuel consumption decreased. The Mk 2 was across the board quicker and used less fuel doing it. So the Mk 2 Model 14 had everything it needed to make sure that people chose to upgrade their next car to something wearing that distinctive Bogliq Blue…

1983 Model 15 (Mutineer)

Unfortunately for Bogliq USA, the Mk 1 Model 15 was less successful than hoped for, with the basic Engage model being given a paltry 87% by Motor World Review. The cars were too thirsty, too hard to drive and reliability wasn’t as good as it should be…

The Mk 2 Model 15 was tweaked to address these shortcomings and also improve on the Mk 1’s sports credentials. Multi-Bog fuel injection was a big part of this plan, as it provided more power with more fuel economy, plus better distribution of the Bogtronic4 to make family cars easier to drive than their Mk 1 predecessors.

1983 Model 16 (Maverick)

The 1979 debut of the new Model 16 was moderately successful. The new design language and new, more refined drivetrains was able to convert buyer interest into actual sales even as certain specific trims underperformed against expectations. These trims were the Engage, which failed to sell well, and the Enthuse 700AE, which didn’t sell enough to justify the differentiated body style.

For the 1983 Mk 2 refresh, trims would be re-positioned, new trims added and choices rationalised to ensure the Mk 2 Model 16 was better tailored to the marketplace’s needs versus the Mk 1…

1983 - 1986 Model 17 Mk2 (Coyote)

Unfortunately for Bogliq USA, the Mutineer chassis didn’t make for a convincing high performance coupe. The V6 and small capacity V8’s available in the Model 17 didn’t cut the mustard as performance engines and the solid rear axle was tricky to drive on the limit. This meant that the Model 17 didn’t sell anywhere near as well as Bogliq HQ needed it to. Worst of all, Motor World reviewed the base 240 Sport and gave it less than 87%!

The Mk2 Model 17 would attempt to improve the faults of the Model 17 that could be fixed. Unfortunately there were a number of faults that were inherent to the platform that would simply have to be mitigated. These issues would be addressed by installing engines with bespoke tunes and careful selection of trim and interior options. Hopefully the sum total of changes rendered would equal the budget coupe that the US consumer was looking for…

1983 - 1986 Model 5 (Cargostar)

As with the 1979 Model 5 update, the 1983 Model 5 saw the safety upgraded, power steering improved and the installation of a Multi-Bog injected motor. The interior was also simplified to improve reliability and reduce ownership costs. Otherwise the Model 5 was the same van that was on sale in the 50’s! If it aint broke then don’t fix it…

The Model 9 Nihilist was a beautiful car; elegant, refined and bold. The Model 20 Nihilist? Ugly as a warthog and a face that only a mother could love! The goal for the Mk2 facelift was to build a silk purse from the Model 20 sow’s ear.

1987 - 1990 Model 21 (Zealot)

The Model 21 was designed to address the fundamental flaws in the Model 14’s design. The Model 14 was too twitchy in the front end and the solid rear caused snap oversteer on the limit. The Model 21 addressed these flaws by introducing a Macpherson strut front suspension and a trailing arm rear suspension. The new suspension design made the car much easier to handle at the limit while simultaneously expanding those handling limits over the old car. For the high performance versions AWD was installed to further build confidence in the cars handling and stability.

The Model 21 also received a number of impressive updates including ABS brakes, cassette decks in all models and high mount stop lamp in the bootlid.

Bogliq USA had to change direction. The old suspension system was holding the car back in the marketplace and FWD was unthinkable. The Model 21 Zealot is the first to test out the new theory and the results are promising… So far!

1987 - 1990 Model 22 (Mutineer)

The changes made to the '83 Model 15 to improve handling and comfort were only partially successful. There were incremental gains made but a complete rethink was required to make the improvements that the marketplace demanded.

Therefore, as with the Model 21, the Model 22 dropped the solid rear end in favour of IRS and struts instead of double wishbones. The result was predictable handling at the limits with faithful responsiveness everywhere else. Handling wasn’t the only area improved though, with all trims boasting a cassette player, alloy wheels and the family trims had an automatic gearbox as standard. Fuel economy and performance has been improved across the board as well… The Mutineer now has something for everyone!

The new Model 22 was expected to resurrect the Mutineer badge in the eyes of the US public. 1987 - 1990 Model 23 (Maverick)

By mid 1984 it was clear to the Bogliq Product Management team that trying to keep the Maverick as a volume seller was going to become unmanageable. The growing interest in large offroad wagons and dual cab utilities for less affluent families meant that there was little interest in budget trimmed large cars. Therefore when designing the Model 23, Bogliq USA restructured the model to cater exclusively to smaller, higher profit, markets rather than selling the Model 23 in substantial volumes as an all-round general purpose model.

The model 23 received the same structural upgrades as the rest of the Bogliq range and is built in three distinct body styles; sedan, coupe and convertible. All but the 700AE have premium or luxury interiors and they all have either premium or luxury cassette decks. The Maverick may have lost its mass market appeal but it has re-emerged as a multi-niche contender with an aspirational trim for every automotive vice!

The expectation of the new Model 23 was to make enough sales to keep the model viable while maximising its “aspirational” value to leverage more buyers into lesser Bogliq products…

PS: 1987 Model 16 (Maverick)

The ASCAR program wasn’t shut down when the Model 23 was put into production. The Model 16 was kept in production on a batch-by-batch basis to build the required homologation total of road cars to satisfy ASCAR regulations. For 1987 this included a full house homologation spec engine, complete with race spec air intakes and exhaust manifolds. The '87 Model 16 Maverick ASCAR is a noisy, smelly throwback sort of car that juuust manages to sell its total of cars each year!

1987 - 1990 Model 24 (Coyote)

For both the previous generation Coyote variants, the chassis has been shared with either the Maverick or Mutineer to save development costs. However this has resulted in flawed designs that don’t handle as well as a sportscar should and hamper the development of truly high performance variants that are more than one trick ponies.

The Model 24 Coyote has sidestepped this issue by sporting a complete double wishbone suspension at every corner. Coupled with a new, more aerodynamic, body and better focussed, role specific, drivetrains, the Model 24 is easier to drive, more sporty and more efficient than the Model 17. Prices have increased, true, but you get so much more for your money with the Model 24 that it’s worth the premium!
