The pinnacle of performance, let us just tell you right now, will cost you. But it is well worth every penny, in our opinion.
If you’re looking to press your brains into the glass of your car in any direction, the Furcio R will most definitely do that. Its extremely taut suspension and wide, aggressive tires allow it to pull a shocking 1.11g in our slalom tests. It is also the second fastest in its class for 0-60 acceleration, at just 4.5 seconds. This is made possible thanks to its 3.1 liter, twin-turbo motor that cranks out 400 horsepower.
But unlike many of its competitors, the Furcio doesn’t eschew creature comforts. High-bolstered sport bucket seats are well-padded, and give such a wide range of adjustment that every single one of our staff was able to find both a comfortable cruising position, as well as a preferred performance driving position.
And the Furcio doesn’t give up its road manners to do this, being just at home on a commute as on the track.
Just remember, you’re going to pay a hefty sum for this kind of uncompromising car.

Mont Royal GV LX AWD
What kind of challenger does it take to dethrone a King? Mont Royal has the answer to that, with their GV LX model.
The two are head-to-head competitors, in the upscale ultra-luxury category.
Ultra-plus, hand-stitched, real leather seating surfaces with heating and cooling. 10-speaker THX-quality SatNav system with Bluetooth capability. Power tilt-and-telescope wheel and pedals with memory settings. Digitally controlled electroluminescent gauges with HUD. Rear window power sunshades. Electrochromic rearview mirror. These are just a few items on the exhaustingly long list of standard features that Mont Royal includes.
Power comes from a 5 liter, 32-valve, twin-cam motor. With 300 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque, it is easily and smoothly motivated, even if the car’s girth doesn’t give it extremely sprightly performance.
But its suspension is where it shines in particular over the Katsuro King. While the ride is a little stiffer than the Katsuro, the difference is only barely perceptible. What is quite ovbvious, however, is how the Mont Royal GV resists unwanted wandering as it “floats” along. While the King can at times feel like a raft in a rainstorm, the Mont Royal is confident and secure.
That is why the king of kings, at least this year, comes from Mont Royal.

Best of Compact Crossover Class - 2007 (TIE)
Bogliq Bolero 127B and Ardent Olympic LS AWD
There was a day long ago where Constantine Bogliq and Jack Chancellor would trade blows with each other, both with their cars and their words. They’re probably continuing that this year from beyond the grave. That’s because the newest crossover releases from both companies are duking it out for the top of our list, and neither has an overall advantage.
With an overall cost difference of just $300 in Bogliq’s favor, the usual edge that both companies battle for just isn’t there this time. Instead, other merits must be considered.
The Ardent Olympic comes across a little bit more like a stylized and lifted hatchback, while the Bogliq looks more like a conventional crossover. This, and a slight height difference, could explain why the Bogliq fared a bit better in our rough road tests.
Conversely, the slightly lower stance and more precisely tuned suspension give the Ardent an overall better, more confident feel on the street.
Better use of dead space for storage and a slightly larger cargo bay gives the Bogliq a significant advantage in interior usability. The Olympic fared a little better in crash tests (though it’s worth noting both got overall 5-star ratings), and reliability projections favor the Ardent.
With two so similarly priced competitors locked in this manner, there was no way we could pick just one for the top of the pile.

Their B70 Furcio has been very unexpected to win the sports compact segment on the Motor review world magazine, It’s their best-selling sports car with overall positive reviews. Their Journey, Also on the same B70 Platform, has gotten third place on the crossover segment. The offroad and drivabillity will be improved, The Bogliq sourced airbags have done well in safety tests. Perhaps better than their own brand airbags. This also means less money is spent developing the airbags the Japanese firm says. They will be pushing out an update to the Furcio to feature a possibly downsized engine, The SSX-VTi-ZX unit used to power their latest crossover in the lineup. The Journey which will be tuned (maybe if a econobox round happens again that engine will be reused.)
The Premier V8 has been doing well (even if it has some parts from Bogliq to save costs but shhh.), The safety has been not so stellar but the car itself has a such a smooth ride, and quiet ride that the AutoMonthly team had decided to test the car out for theirselves.
Their cars have overall been successfull. It has shown that the brand has changed quite a lot since then.
The leather seats used in the premier’s launch units had real cow leather. Animal groups weren’t happy at all, with a protest at the dealership causing property damage. It was switched to faux leather to avoid that happening
Their banned commercial “Fly like the stars” promoted reckless driving.

Hampton Motor Group - Round 11 Aftermath/Round 12 Prologue
Despite a major economic recessions, the late 2000s were a good time for Hampton as a whole - Chairman Tony’s decision to invest in a new engine range was paying off handsomely. Sales were strong across the board, and in particular, enthusiasts continued to purchase the high-performance trims in droves. The rest of the range remained as successful as ever, but by the early 2010s, the market had begun to shift under their feet - SUVs, crossovers and pickup trucks were about to replace passenger cars as the most popular vehicles in the United States. To that end, Tony decided to do something his company had never done before - build a full-size pickup truck capable of taking on the best the segment had to offer - a tall order considering that his passenger cars were now getting long in the tooth and about to be superseded. But with over 60 years of experience behind him, he was confident that he could pull it off.
Tony’s plan was to use a new longitudinally-engined platform for the company’s larger cars and their upcoming mid-sized crossover. Meanwhile, their smaller cars (including their next compact crossover) would utilize a transverse-engined platform. As for engines, Hampton would roll out a new modular turbocharged straight-six for 2013, along with a four-cylinder powerplant - but the existing V8 and V12 engines would carry on, albeit with direct injection for improved economy and reduced emissions, and even then, only in high-performance and/or premium trims. Technology would not be neglected either - an all-new infotainment system would be implemented across the board, with upmarket cars gaining more features - and Tony was determined to make sure it worked properly, thanks to thorough testing. All in all, despite numerous challenges, the new decade was set to be a significant one for Tony and his beloved company.
Looking back on 2007, there was one review that made Tony laugh:
“Who on Earth thought that was a good idea? I get that it’s aimed at people who want a luxury truck that can conquer even the toughest terrain, but it’s no substitute for a proper car on tarmac!”
And there was another that made him smile:
“Quite right. And we beat those boys from Katsuro with a hot hatch, of all things - an amazing achievement indeed.”
Certainly, the Hampton range of the 90s and 00s was a tough act to follow.
Ardent Motors Timeline, National Struggle (2007-2012)
February 2007 - Sales continue to grow year over year, though at a slightly slower pace.
December 2007 - Ardent displays an early production model of their upcoming 7th generation, 2009MY Sentinel platform. The GT Limited sport compact trim continues on, despite flat sales. A late prototype vehicle is also shown, speculated to be the replacement for the Hood SUV. It is a unibody construction crossover, though it is still RWD-based. The prototype unit utilizes an experimental twin-turbo version of the Scorpius V8.
February 2008 - First year sales figures of the new Chancellor model fall unexpectedly short. However, both the Olympic and Hood show increases.
August 2008 - The freshly redesigned Ardent Sentinel hits showroom floors.
December 2008 - Ardent confirms suspicions when the previous year’s prototype Hood turns into a production model at the LA Auto Show. Gone is the twin-turbo experimental engine, replaced with the expected range of Eridani and Scorpius engines. Gone as well is the old ladder frame, replaced with a unibody RWD based model. Also making their debuts at the show are the 7th generation Marathon sports coupe, 6th generation Piper subcompact, and 2nd generation Olympic crossover.
February 2009 - Year of year sales plummet as the economy tanks. The new Sentinel fails miserably to hit intended marks, despite fuel efficiency numbers that should prop it up in the marketplace.
September 2009 - The 4th generation Hood goes on sale. It is immediately panned in the press as not being anything resembling a spiritual successor to the original Hood. The new Marathon, Olympic, and Piper launch as well, with the Olympic being lauded as a triumph of fresh engineering.
December 2009 - The LA Auto Show is quiet for Ardent, with only a redesigned Kestrel minivan showing up on the platform. Press material teases a potential redesign of the Regent large crossover.
February 2010 - Official sales figures show a small increase over year as the economy slowly stabilizes. Despite early setbacks, the new Sentinel finishes the year strong.
September 2010 - The new 2011MY Kestrel minivan makes its way to showroom floors. Reception from the automotive press is positive, though sales start slow.

In fairness, the Fennec Turbo is not aimed at the higher-end premium segment, but at the more affordable mass-market part of the sector. Moreover, the Harpy will sadly never come back, but at least the mid-engined turbo Vulture fills its niche for now.
Katsuro Automotive Round 11 Aftermath
The 2007 reviews for the brand was a bit of a mixed bag for the company with praises in certain segments and expressions of concern in some.
The newly introduced CX-4 was not so well received by critics due to its pricepoint. Katsuro went above and beyond to ensure the model’s reliability, but the model fell short in areas of drivability and practicality compared to the competitors. Sales were steady due to the brand’s trusted reputation but updates were planned for the next generation.
The King was also overthrown after 60 years of reigning dominance over the high end luxury segment in reviews as the drivability ratings fell short. This was due to the added power of the new V10 Biturbo engine which cranked out enough torque to rotate the earth, and the company retaining the rear wheel drive setup. This resulted in suspension calibration to be a little bit more sportier than other cars in the segment, but still was hands down the most royal interpretation of a castle on wheels in terms of comfort and prestige.
The Vatina GTR was a game changer in the sports compact segment, as it obliterated its rivals on the drag strip. Reviewers were a bit skeptic of the officially announced performance data from the concept. Dyno tests have shown that the car was punching way above what Katsuro announced, a whopping 70 Hp more. Performance tests showed the car hitting 0-60 in 3.7 seconds over and over again, and clubbing supercars in drag races. The cars started flying off the shelves for its supercar performance in a compact sport package, even if with a premium sticker price.
