Variation (バリエーション in Katakana) is a Japanese automotive magazine with roots back to the early 1980s. Founded by Daisuke Arai in 1981, the magazine was initially founded to meet the needs of the Japanese tuning scene and the enthusiasts behind them.
Initially, Variation started out as a magazine that covered the early exploits of the Japanese underground illegal tuning and street racing scene, but later evolved to include legally hosted Speed Trials, Car Reviews, and other such extras.
What I will be writing and looking for?
So depending on what I get, I’ll either be writing Speed Trial runs around the Yatabe Test Track, or perhaps Japanese oriented car reviews (lmao watch as i fail horribly since i’ve never lived in japan, japanese people hmu if you wanna give me tips), or maybe if you want some features about your tuning companies, I could write about that too.
I’ll most likely write a first article to give some people an idea of how I’ll be doing things.
So with that in mind, what I’ll be looking for most likely are both tuned and non-tuned vehicles likely primarily aimed at the Japanese Domestic Market, though some exceptions may apply especially when it comes to Yatabe Speed Trials, where I’ll likely be letting in some American or European performance cars (tuned or not, either probably works).
In essence, drift cars, speed trial cars, illegal Wangan race cars, stock Japanese factory tuners, maybe some Italian exotics since those are pretty popular in Japan as far as I’ve heard, or hell even minivans and wagons with tuner potential, oh and maybe some American sports cars and potentially lowriders since there’s a niche for that within Japan as well. I’ll probably even do some tuning company workshop tours if I can.
Years for cars will vary, but generally I would prefer older cars.
Submitting cars
So for submitting cars,
Just PM me here on the Forums
don’t post it in a reply to this thread NOR IN MY DISCORD DMs I GET ENOUGH ALREADY FROM FURRY FEMBOYS i will litearlly ignoere yuo so dont do that kthxily. I will try not to be too stringent with looks and stuff, but a good quality submission will always be nice. The next part, I’m not sure how other forum magazines deal with, but Realism sucks i know but shut the fuck up this is my magazine not yours will be a deciding factor of whether or not I’ll choose to include your car in an article or not, but generally I’ll let some lore stuff slip by if I can be provided with enough explainiingnations on why you have overhead cams on an American V8 muscle car with a 7.8L engine in 1974. But the general guideline is if that it isn’t something straight outta minmax hell i’ll be more than happy to let things through and make a nice little writeup about it.
If you’ve sent in a more stock/modern car, expect to be placed in the “lesser” priority part of the queue, as I’m mainly looking for cars that are older and modified to meet more JDM tastes.
