It’s time for the Big One. For years the Grand Prix for Touring Cars at the Roldburgring had been a popular standalone race for manufacturers to prove their cars. This 1000km race tests the limits of both driver and machine and for the first time ever it will also be a points race for the continental championship. The layout saw one change in 1970 that remodeled the start/finish straight to acomodate a larger grid, but the track has stayed largely the same for over 40 years.


TRACK LAYOUT

Roldburgring is a very long and technical track with many ups and downs and laptimes are expected to be well over 10 minutes. There are also some fast sections but low to medium speed corners are key here. The pit lane is also very long at 1337 meters, so thirsty cars will be punished more than in other tracks.

Turns out I’ve made that same mistake in the 3 previous rounds too.

ROUND 4 - RACE


At the start of the race the #432 Vitreo-FMW was a bit too ambitious and spun. Just a couple of laps later, the #303 Lunascura and the #34 ACZ made mistakes too. The former got away without any damage but the latter took some damage that was repaired on it’s next stop.

On lap 4 the #420 Bovos had to make a quick emergency stop to fix some mechanical issues. Then on lap 10 the #772 Ruthoantyrth Racing car had a spin but managed to avoid the barriers.

On lap 13 the #500 Sconto and the #13 Vorstentelg collided and spun, but both cars carried on without any damage. Two laps later the #83 factory Vorstentelg had to retire because of mechanical issues, making it two DNFs in a row for that car.

The #83 might have leaked some oil over the track as cars #8, #16 and #84 spun on the following lap. Luckily none of them suffered any damage. A bit later on lap 18 the #23 Hoffsman also had to retire with mechanical issues.

With half of the race gone it became clear that the Zacspeeds and the Lunascuras were very closely matched. While the Zacspeed had better pace, the Lunascura was better on fuel.

On lap 24 the #48 Mara and the #483 Springwell Velt crashed while fighting for position and were damaged beyond repair. Two laps later the #11 Oberon was forced to pit because of a mechanical issue that made it loose a lap to the leaders. The #190 Drakus also had to make an emergency stop, but it was a quick fix.

The #25 Hexe Oberon had a suspension failure that caused it to crash hard into the barriers and had to retire. The #260 Sagdiyev and the #20 Newman lost some time avoiding the accident but were undamaged themselves. On the next lap the remaining Hoffsman and the #49 Mara had to stop to fix some mechanical issues. The Hoffsman quickly got back into the race but the Mara couldn’t be fixed and retired.

More mechanical issues on lap 35, this time the #199 MTL Ryuji and the #303 Lunascura. The Ryuji had to retire while the Lunascura keep going. On that same lap the #223 Comanche spun but had no damage.

On lap 37 the #601 Durd had to pit to fix a small mechanical issue. There was drama on the next lap for the ACZ team as the teammates crashed. Car #34 got away without any damage but car #24 suffered some damage that was repaired on it’s last pit stop. Two laps before the end the #878 Rennara made a mistake and hit the barriers the car carried some light damage until the end of the race.

The battle for the overall win came down to the last lap. The Lunascura should have been faster in theory, but a great drive from the drivers of the #1 Zacspeed gave them their first overall win and their third class win of the season. The #33 Lunascura won division 3 and came up second overall by only 5.5s after 7 hours and 38 minutes of racing. In division 1 the #7 Kaiserin finally got it’s first podium with a dominant win.

From the longest track we go to the shortest. The short laps and good visibility makes Cestalis a favorite for spectators, since you can see most of the track from the main straight you’ll always have some action to follow. The original layout was designed for stock car racing, with a very simple layout (two sweepers and two hairpins) that could be ran in both directions. After the track was redesigned in the mid 50s, it became clockwise only.


TRACK LAYOUT

Cestalis is deceptively fast. The lap starts with a long straight that goes into a flat-out sweeper (for most cars). The end of the lap features a slower section, so it’s not all about power. The pitlane is pretty short so while addional stops aren’t optimal they aren’t as bad as in other tracks.

The brute force approach finally kinda working out for me . . . presumably until those DCOEs bring me extra pit stops

ROUND 5 - RACE


The start of the race saw some contact and the #17 Hexe ended up spining but it kept going without any damage. Later in lap 9, two div.1 cars had to stop to fix some issues. The #262 came out of the pits soon after, but the #166 MTL Ryuji lost 6 laps to the leaders.

Three laps later the #11 Oberon had a little spin on it’s own. The #303 Lunascura and the #772 CBC also spun on lap 19 after making contact. Luckily none of them suffered any damage.

The first retirement of the race came in lap 26 when the engine of the #432 Vitreo-FMW failed. Two laps later the #601 Delattre had a spin and kept going without any damage. The next laps were pretty quiet with only a spin for the #483 privateer Velt.

During the following laps the Zacspeeds managed to pass the #55 Scarcelli Hexe for the lead of division 2. However in lap 60 the #5 crashed and suffered some light damage that it had to carry for the next 10 laps until it was fixed on it’s next stop. Then in division 3 another contender made an even bigger mistake. On lap 64 the #71 TurbĂČl spun at high speed and crashed into the barriers, taking the car out of the race.

A lap later the #952 Rennara also spun but managed to avoid the barriers. Then on lap 67 the #1 Zacspeed which made it lose the class lead.

After 77 laps the #33 Lunascura crossed the line in first place. With the #71 out and the #303 in third place this means the #33 wins the Drivers Championship with two rounds to go. In division 2 the #55 Scarcelli took it’s first win, and manages to remain in contention. Division 1 was pretty uneventful with the #7 winning and Kaiserin taking home an easy 1-2, although both of the Garage One-Five cars are still in contention.

By the way I think it’s really funny that the only teams still in contention are the race winners and the fucking Borat team lmao.

This is another track with no real inspirations, maybe a bit of Imola, Jarama and maybe Adria. Astela is one of the newest tracks in Orisia. First opened in 1971 it mainly hosted national level series for it’s two first seasons, but for 1972 the OTCC would visit the track. While it’s a short layout it has top level instalations and is considered one of the safest tracks in all of the continent.


TRACK LAYOUT

This is one of the slowest tracks in the season, with short straights and plenty of medium to low speed corners. There’s some drops and climbs but it’s nothing crazy. The pitlane is pretty long considering the length of the track, so an aditional stop might get you close to getting lapped.

This is another track with no real inspirations, maybe a bit of Imola, Jarama and maybe Adria. ROUND 6 - RACE


The race had a clean start, but at the end of the first lap the #48 Mara had to pull into the pits to fix a mechanical issue. Later in lap 6 the #6 Kaiserin Okara had a spin and lost the lead of division 1.

Again in lap 14 it was the #6 having issues. This time it had to pull into the pits for a quick mechanical fix. Three laps later the #12 factory Oberon had a spin.

In lap 21 the driver of the #69 Bovos lost control of the car and crashed. It was unable to keep going and had to retire. Then on lap 26 the #66 Phénix and the #83 Vorstentelg crashed in to each other. The Vorstentelg kept going without issues but the Phénix suffered some damage that had to be repaired on their next stop.

After this intense start to the race, things calmed down and there weren’t any further issues for the rest of the race.

There was a fight for the overall lead between the Zacspeeds and the Lunascuras. Just like in Brunhe the Zacspeed where slightly faster but they needed an extra stop to make it to the end.

The race finished with a comfortable 1-2 for Lunascura with the #33 winning division 3 and overall. The cars sailed home in formation to celebrate that they are now division 3 teams champions. The #5 Zacspeed took the win in division 2 preventing their teammate from taking the drivers championship in this round. The #7 Kaiserin won division 1 with the #15 Garage One-Five in second and #45 in third. With this result, cars #7 and #15 get closer to the championship leader. Number 45 however is now out of contention.

One last race to catch the Comanche’s for a podium in Div3.

We race for the last time in 1972 and to finish the first season of the OTCC we’re visiting one of the classics of Orisia. Seria is a punishing tracks that leaves little margin for error. This semipermanent track has seen no layout changes in over 40 years and is considered one of the more challenging tracks in the continent.


TRACK LAYOUT

The Circuito di Seria has a tricky layout with long uphill straights that will see the highests top speeds in the season barring Marada-Porta. The second half of the track is much more technical as you descend down the slow speed corners. A balanced car that performs well everywhere is key here.

ROUND 7 - RACE


It was a clean start for the Seria 500km and all cars got away cleanly. However, on lap 3 the driver of the #16 Ryuji attempted a risky maneuver and crashed. The car suffered heavy damage and had to retire. On that same lap the #21 Newman retired into the pits with mechanical issue. The #261 Sagdiyev was had better luck and got going again after a quick fix.

On lap 6 the #55 Scarcelli had a spin but avoided the barriers. The #13 Flatline was not so lucky and retired after a hard crash. Another retirement came on lap 10, this time it was the #42 Hexe with mechanical issues.

Seria was proving to be challenging for both drivers and machines, as the #11 Oberon also retired after a crash in lap 15. A few laps later the #23 Hoffsman and the #24 ACZ came together while fighting for position. Both cars lost time but suffered no damage.

On lap 21 the #45 Ikeda started smoking and eventually came to a stop. The car couldn’t make it back to the pits and was retired. The #55 Scarcelli suffered a similar fate on lap 33.

The #505 Velt lost time to a spin on lap 39. On that same lap the #500 Sconto pulled into the pits to fix a small mechanical issue. Two laps later the #33 Lunascura and the #532 FMW crashed into each other. The Lunascura was undamaged but the FMW retired a lap later due to the damage.

On lap 53 the #1 Zacspeed made an emergency stop to fix an issue. The car returned to the track soon after. Three laps later the #25 Hexe crashed and suffered its third retirement of the season.

On lap 62 the #66 Phenix and the #602 Delattre crashed. The Phenix was fine but the Delattre got some noticeable damage that it carried into the end of the race. On the last lap the #20 Newman started smoking but it barely managed to cross the line to avoid a double retirement.

The #303 Lunascura crossed the line in first place for the first time after failing to do so for the whole season. In division 2 the #5 Zacspeed won and even though the #55 had to retire it had enough of a gap to keep second in the Drivers Championship. Zacspeed Racing took the Teams Championship though. In division 3 the #7 Kaiserin did all it could to recover from a bad start of the season, taking its fouth win in a row. It wasn’t enough and the #6 took the Drivers Championship. With the #45 retired, Kaiserin RennSport took home the Teams Championship too.

No surprises in the Privateer Cup as Kaiserin RennSport, Scuderia Scarcelli Corse and Ruthoantyrth Racing took the win in their respective divisions.

Rooting for 772! I’m sad my own car got binned but I’m glad to see the privateer group is doing really good with the Cruiser!
