1973 Rally di Fruinia [FINISHED]

Full results of C1 updated. I’m lagging a bit behind in updates, but social obligations were many these last two weeks.

sees the Premier down in 7th place

Welp…guess it was a bad idea to go for SOHC 4-valve.

Hoping for better performance from the Ronolit E. And also - MAN, that little Bogliq was absolutely flying this round. Two fastest sectors, the fastest stage time, AND only one 0 in the lot.

It was all very close anyway, and don’t forget there are random rolls leading to small time penalties (or in case of 5 penalties of the same kind - on the basis of engine reliability or car reliability - in a row, a DNF…).

Go! go! go! little Satsu… I mean, Mitsushita.

Huh…
Bogliq apparently is good because of their drivers…
AMP is the real deal!
(real talk: congratz @HighOctaneLove for the stage-win)

did not expect the Hufi-Anhultz combo to be THAT far up, considering me being crap at production sports cars

The Italians in the Znopresk make the best first impression in this nightly first stage cluster of the 1300cc class. Closely followed by the Polish team in the Eagle, and the peace activists in the RAI.

Quite some teams appear to have issues with the early hour, or the dark, and we see some steering errors, spins and near crashes from Marko Fors in the Tuevo, Satoro in the SW Azur, and the Bulgarian driver of the Wisconsin Motors car.

Technical issues especially for Brits in the Bogliq Kitten, which is struggling with its gearbox. The North Americans in the Keystone and the Lutoza, despite managing a high tempo, equally see their times suffer through short repair stops.

The Aviator Ronolit of Day and Flores is not doing badly, but it appears to have issues following the tempo of the faster cars this stage. These things can obviously change from stage cluster to stage cluster, as Furlan and Tomasetig in the Znopresk find out, losing control and shredding a tire, and setting down a time nowhere near as impressive as in the previous cluster.

No mistakes this time round from Chervenkov in the Wisconsin Motors car, as they grab the full points here, with the Keystone and Lutoza on their heels.

Solid performance so far from the Poles in the Eagle, who have been in the points each cluster. The Aviator Ronolit was clearly spurred on by the slower times last cluster, as they manage to finish first this time around.

The Bogliq is still strugging with that gearbox, but it’s showing signs of improvement. They manage to finish just above the Wisconsin Motors car, which is running rather inconsistently.

Better news then from Fors and Härmä in the Tuevo, who are finally having a good run in their rear-wheel drive car, and set down the best time. Before the Eagle and RAI.

Aggressive driving and a high strung engine spell disaster for Sotaro and Viitala in the SW Azur. The engine of the number 528 car has serious reliability issues, and at a certain point, it simply gives up. The team needs to retire from the Rally.

Little issues and small mistakes keep on plaguing the Znopresk team, and nibbling seconds of their stage times, leaving them disappointed and behind tempo of what the car is intrinsically capable off.

Held back by issues, this has been a frustrating stage for the Bogliq. Although Barnes and Cooke finish the race, back in the paddock it is clear the gearbox, throttle body and fuel system all need to be replaced. The Bogliq team cannot guarantee to finish repairs within the allowed period between stages. The number 86 is retires to focus more on the other Bogliq entires.

McDougall and Lysachuk on the other hand are celebrating. While never quite the fastest, the number 130 Keystone has impressed overall, despite only just slipping through in qualification.

Ah, yes… Keystone is most pleased with the stage 1 results…

sees Ronolit in dead last of the vehicles that finished with just 18 points

This is karma biting me back, innit? (Still in the running, though, unlike some cars; and the Ronolit was fastest in Sector 3! Woot!)

Still, though, note to self: Never, ever call Mr. Bogliq “Konstantly Bopalicking” again, even in jest.

That being said, RIP twin-cam Bogliq Kitten #86. Gone but never forgotten.

Hoping for better from the Primavera and the Fauxhill - but that Primavera is going to be a pain to work on if it manages to break (two cams and 24 tiny valves all buried deep in the engine bay…behind the driver).

Furlan is young and a future promise. We hope he will do better in the future.

Note: to speed up a bit with the challenge, I’ll keep the replay snippets for C3 and C4 for Stage 2, and for C5 and C6 for stage 3.

Immediate issues for Nardone in the FAEB; the Argentinian does not look happy at the state of that engine. Equally problematic start for the West-Germans in the SBA, where they Thai tech seems to give up on them.

On the other hand, we do see a good start from Skudło and the Russian from Leningrad, Voronov, in the Eagle. The G&W Saex is equally setting down a good first stage cluster.

In the middle, times are close to each other. There are some concerns about the Lutoza Europa: Conti and Fernandez have complained about the front suspension, and it doesn seem to interfere with the front body panels.

That didn’t take long… Nardone and Gallo are looking despondent halfway through the 3rd special stage of the second cluster. The engine is continually misfiring, and there’s really no useful power output anymore. They’ll have to throw the towel.

The Canadians in the Ars Zepar are dictating the tempo this cluster around, with only really Bâzu Cantacuzino and Șerbănescu able to follow in their trusty Apulum.

Fighting minor technical issues the previous two clusters, Siegler and Weiss in the SBA Gracelet have got the car running smoothly again, and it shows, with a fastest time here. Second are the Italians in the Znopresk, who have been relatively anonymous so far, but managed to get a point here and there.

First points as well for the Aviator Primavera. Gatz and Atkins happy to not be plagued by the unreliability of that power plant for at least one cluster. Suffering their car as well, are that other Americo-British duo, Mitchell and Woods, with their SW Okta - highly unreliable, and not that controllable, especially on the braking by the looks of it.

Either through the skill of Stampatti or the design of the Hugi Rioter, the car turns in extremely well for a front-wheel drive car. It is doing well overall, and takes a fastest cluster time here.

Some of the teams appear to be in some trouble though. The Romanians in the Apulum are having bad luck with burst tires and small steering errors, while the G&W Seax is having its share of technical issues as well, on top of not being the most powerful car around.

Sara Bevilacqua jumps into the arms of Bressan at the finish line, as the Znopresk managed to fight off a very fast Eagle 203 for the last 10 points of this stage. Third here is the Hugi Rioter, who manages to get some extra points for the overall score.

The other cars seem to have been quite inconsistent over this stage, due to slower sections, technical issues or mistakes from the drivers. Especially the Lutoza Europa of Conti and Fernandez has taken an additional heavy blow here, after getting off the road and damaging the chassis.

Low-ish engine reliability and bad luck with the dice rolls.

In this case a random number generated between 0-1000. If you have 5 times in a row over your reliability score for the engine, you are DNF.

Reporter: “Yadouin Maheddin. Yes, That’s really his name… as driver for the RAI team’s number 321 car, has turned in a time only 7 minutes behind the lead car for stage one. turns to Yadouin Yadouin, you’ve finished stage one with the third fastest time. Did you think you’ll do as well as the Championship progresses?”

Yadouin: “Umm…yes. The car is small and light, maybe lacking power, but I think it handles okay.”

Reporter: And that’s it from the first three drivers across the line here at the 1973 Rally di Fruinia in class 2, N.D. Nyall in Naefoli."

Good to see that classic FWD Eagles are doing very good for now. Time to see if the 604 is a mighty asphalt-tearing beast, or an uncontrollable deathtrap.

By the way, I’m really surorised that the Lutoza Europa did so poorly - it looks really fast and had a superb score in the qualifying
